In this video I show how I get a huge acoustic guitar sound with this pickup hack/trick.
It's something I saw on the Irish Folk Festival scene in the U.S.
I saw a few great guitarists getting a huge acoustic sound from their guitars.
They had an extra pickup installed running under their low strings and it was being treated as a bass guitar.
In this video I walk you through my setup and give a lot of other options to work with. If you have any questions, just let me know. I'm happy to help.
Here's all the gear I mentioned in the video:

Cool, I'm glad you like the setup. I watched your D'addario Flat tops video, I see you have an M1 pickup installed. That is one great pickup. A friend of mine uses an M1 for the bass setup that I have here in this video. He takes out the D, G, B and high E out of the M1 and just leaving the low D and A string. That give him a really clean bass tone. It's an expensive option but really sounds great.

@@aodancoynemusic Yes the M1A sounds really good at the nut but slightly more electric the farther up the neck you play IMO. Thanks for the info! Those Align series look amazing. I haven't' tried them myself but you can't go wrong with LR Baggs! That sounds like a sweet setup you have. I also have the Boss RV6, nice addition to the chain. If you're thinking of exploring a bit more I recently tried adding the Electro Harmonix Mel9 for fun and it's pretty brilliant. The string sound really adds, it works more for backing songs rather than backing tunes, but it's something I haven't heard too many people doing. I might make a video about it at some point.

Great video & thanks for sharing. I've been using the boss oc5 for a few months with a Taylor 214ce. Hi Aodan, I've installed the neo d & the initial results are great! So much better than before so thank you. I'm road testing it for my next few gigs before I commit to installing another jack input for it. Sounds good and tracks well when set a little under half way through the 'range' setting. The 'lowest' setting is still glitchy so maybe something boss need to perfect in time. String balance is better now with a dominant E & still picking up the A at a slightly lower level. Sounded huge at my gig last night through my RCF column! I'm now considering the palmer pocket amp too. Does this make a nice addition when shaping the sound? The mute is a great idea & also the ability to boost the weak signal & DI it. I might even try & add some compression to it but it's then starting to become a bit overkill! Thanks again for sharing

Hey Aodan! Amazing tutorial! Can you explain what the 3rd guitar input is for? the one you mention at 1:28. Greatly appreciate this video!
@aodancoynemusic
@aodancoynemusic Год назад
Cheers John, glad you found it helpful. I use the third jack connection mainly for my solo music. The setup is the same as the bass pickup, except on the high A & D stings. So I isolate those strings with another pickup mounted sideways and I have that signal running through a Electro Harmonic MEL9. I use that to create swells with either the Orchestra, Strings, or Choir tones. I have it pretty low in the mix, it's subtle, but adds nicely to the overall tone or a chorus or bridge when I'm playing solo. So overall, I have the standard guitar channel, the bass channel, that high strings MEL9 channel, then I use a PorchBoard stomp box and sometimes an SPD1 WAV percussion pad with uploaded samples I can trigger to match my songs. There's a lot of moving parts. It's a little impractical but fun.

Another idea I thought about while watching your video is using a multi-fx unit that is capable of internally splitting your guitar input into two parallel signal chains that you can process differently. One would be your main guitar sound, and the other one your can use for the bass sound: cut off the treble, add octave and compression

I just got a Boss GT-1000 Core, and I was thinking the exact same thing! It could do all kinds of processing (pre-amp, noise suppression, octave, etc) on the signals separately - and either mix them together, or even output separately if you’d want to amplify them separately.

I was just about to comment this exact comment 😂 I use a Boss AD10 to give me two guitar inputs, that I can mix individually at the pedal, and a Boss OC5 and split the signal out of it and it gives me so much versatility! Because you can save your mix to the AD10 memory, I can have two or three different guitars in different turnings ready to go on the stand and it's just a case of change guitar and select the saved mix 😁 plus it has built in tuner if I do decide to just travel one guitar and pedalboard!

Thank you for this. I can’t believe installing the Fishman that way has never occurred to me. I’ve always wanted to isolate my two bass strings. I always figured I’d eventually get someone to make me a kind of “two-in-one” pickup. One that would have two separate pickups in one housing - two separate outputs as well, of course. One with two poles (bass) and one with 4 poles (the rest). I currently just run a single line out into a crossover filter that will let me send bass and treble out as two separate channels. It’s not perfect separation but it works pretty good. I’ve also used the Fishman midi pickup. The software lets you assign sounds to separate strings. Not a fan of the latency issues that come with midi processing. I’m a fingerpicker so it all gets to be a little too much for the processor to keep up with. I have one of those Fishman humbuckers. Gotta try that setup.

Glad you find it helpful. The new Submarine Pro pickup actually has two outputs on the one pickup, and you can isolate each string as needed. Worth checking out. I have one, it's has it's flaws, but comes in very handy too. I haven't tried to crossover filter as you describe. I also haven't tried to midi pickups, but I have seen and heard them being used to great effect. The guitarist in the band Rúna uses a mini setup.

@aodancoynemusic
@aodancoynemusic Год назад
How are ya Gary, I haven't tried this exact setup with the headphone adapter. Must give it a go. A few others were saying to just stick a 1/4 to 1/4 adapter in and leave that hanging... I gave that a go, but it just ended up buzzing away on me. And when I'm using the OC3 as the on/off switch it still has the issue of the click sound when I switch it on and off. So a mute and DI where I cut the highs and mids is still in my chain. (But that OC3 of mine has been through the wars over the years so that could be my problem with the click I'm getting). I will give the 1/8 to 1/4 headphone adapter a go and see if that works for me though. Cheers for the heads up.

Great video, thanks! Quick question : when the Boss pedal is ON and the mute pedal is OFF, I believe the vertical pickup still picks some sound from the 4 higher strings that we don't wanna hear right? Is the leakage minimal and not a problem? Sorry for my English, hope it's clear :)

The EH B9 pedal has a setting for split bass that simplifies things a bit. No special pickup needed and you can just turn it on or off for this effect. Has two outputs so that keeps both bass and regular guitar signals split. I tried a compressor and EQ after the bass output for more tweakability and that wasn't too bad. I still feel like this octave pedal bass sound is too robotic for my ears, so I use sparingly in acoustic performances. So much fun so worth it though.

I have the Electro Harmonix Mel9 and I was using that same setup for a while with the cello and low choir sounds. I'd love to hear what it's like with the B9 Bass sound though. What I tend to find when using it like that is that the separation of strings isn't too precise and the tone gets fairly muddy. That's why I really use the extra pickup, to get that clean low tone. But I'm defo gona give the B9 a go! Cheers for the suggestion. I just invested in the new Submarine Pro pickup and I'm finding that to be pretty good. Worth checking out.

That sounds pretty sweet! I have tried splitting the signal with other octave pedals but I've never tried the Electro-harmonix Bass9. The thing that I've found tricky to get right is the tracking, without a separate pickup and the Boss OC3 the signal gets really muddy when I simply split it.. Especially for the Traditional Irish music backing that I'd be doing. But I'd defo be up for giving the Bass9 a go. I have the Mel9 pedal and that is amazing. I’ve been looking into doing this “conversion” so to speak but have yet to find an octave pedal that sounds clean enough. I usually find them to not properly track the played notes (probably picking up to much harmonics or something to that effect) and I find it gets kinda fuzzy sounding. As to DI-boxes I’m a bit picky 😛 I’ve been using Radial Stage Bug SB-1. They’re tiny so I’ve manage to fit 3 on my board and it’s pretty much a J48 which I think is one of the best DI’s there is.

Ya I totally get you. I had trouble with harmonic overtones coming from the Boss OC3 for a while. But after playing with the octave level I was able to tame things down and that changes depending on what guitar I'm using. Then with the DI box I was able cut all of the high and most of the mid tones out which really helped nail it in. It's still not perfect, but it suits my playing style. If you do find a cleaner setup please do let me know. I'm always looking to improve my setup. That Radial Stage Bug SB1 looks great! The next DI box I want to get for my guitar is the Grace Felix2 preamp. It's pricey, but I have a few friends who own it and it sounds amazing.

Hi, sorry about the delay in response and cheers for the comment. There are a few issue with just going with one line straight into the octave pedal and simply using the polly function - Having all 6 strings running through the pedal and then strumming has a very muddy tone. I find that the tracking on the pedal can't keep up with all 6 strings at the same time, and for the style of music I'd be playing it's fairly unusable running it that way. So to get a really clear tone that tracks great, an extra pickup that just focuses in on the low strings seems to be needed. This way of running things also allows the two channels to be sent to the desk or front of house to be treated as separate instrument (so you or the soundman can EQ each channel - ie. guitar and bass channel). You can then boost the bass channel without issue to suit you style of music. Hope that helps clear up why I run things this way. But if you've found a way to fix the issues without this setup I'd love to hear how you sort things. I'm always looking to improve and make my setup easier, as long as the tone and tracking are kept solid. Cheers.

Hi Aodan, am I delighted I found your RU-vid Channel, I hope you can give me some advice, first off soon as I heard you speak, I said to myself, you sound like your from kerry, but lol not too far out your from Patrick roach country, we have been on TV together many years ago live @3 search for a star 1990, but since then I started a wedding band and now years later I'm a oneman band playing to backing tracks, and just last Friday while playing in Abbeyfeale, with my 9 series RCF's and B1500xp sub 's and my Takamine EN10, using it mainly because of Patrick's day and left my electric guitars sitting on the stand, I had my acoustic through the Nux Stage floorman, but playing away when playing over the bass strings I could feel boom, well that's kinda overkill, but this nice bass sound, of course yes I had my Subs on stage but this got me thinking, wondering if I could deepen down the low E A D strings a bit more and still have the other strings crisp, So I said I will buy the Boss Octave pedal then a friend of mine said its a lot of money to be splashing out and maybe then not happy in the end, So I was told get the clone from behringer, try this first at only a few euro and has good reviews, of course still not sold on just buying the pedal I had to do some extra browsing and, the title of your video brought me to you, then at the start here you said this is how my guitar sounds now, without the pickup turned on, then you Litteraly got my full attention when you played with the bass pickup on, I said that's! the sound I'm after, can you give me some advice here please, I play country, folk, ballads, all genres really, I have the behringer octave in transit, am I wasting my time with this pedal, or should I change guitar, or just go with exactly what you mentioned here and also the kill switch bringing the acoustic back to normal when I want, I'm anxious to get this plan of mine rolling as soon as possible, thanks so much for the video,

Hi Martin, thanks for reaching out. I'm glad the video has been helpful. I've been through quite a lot of different setups at this stage, so it's really trial and error. It'll depend on the sound you like. This setup in the video is what I settled on after a lot of different setups. I've recently changed things slightly. I'm now using a submarine pro pickup. That runs into the Boss OC3, which I think is perfect for the sound I want. (I haven't tried out the Behringer octave, looks cool. Let me know how it sounds once you get it going). Finally I've changed my bass DI to a Sadowsky SBP-1 Bass preamp/DI. I haven't gigged with it yet, but it sound great from my home amp. So overall, I'm still trying out new stuff and I'm always on the hunt for new gear. I don't think you'd have to change guitar or anything too drastic like that. The cheapest option would be to just run something like a Fishman rare earth humbucker sideways across the low string, stick that into your beringer octave and see what that sounds like when treated as a bass channel through your desk. Let me know how you get on with it! Enjoy playing around and finding that perfect sound for your music 👍😁🎸

Hi Aodan, I played a gig last night first night with the Neo D pickup, plugged it straight into my desk, and for me to get any sound out of if at all I had to turn the gain up all the way? I was going to use the beringer UO300 pedal but I did not like the sound, yes I know it's cheap but I just wanted to see how this would fair out before I bought the boss, So last night I had my guitar just plugged into my NU-X floor stageman and I just left the Neo D plugged in also, but as I said it's channel was up full, do I have to get the Boss pedal to drive it? having to turn the desk gain up full, this can't be right 🤔👍

Hi Martin, sorry about the delay in reply. My first suggestion would be to test out how close the pickup is to the strings. On one of my guitars I had to add a little foam padding under the pickup to increases the height and get it closer to the strings to get a better tone. Outside of that I boost the signal with a DI box before it gets to the desk. Hopefully that will sort the issue out for you. Let me know how you get on 👍

@aodancoynemusic
@aodancoynemusic 2 года назад
Hi Finn, when I run the extra line out from the bass channel into the octave pedal the signal from that line will always be on without a mute switch. Even when the octave pedal is in the off position there is still a direct (non octave) sound coming from the pickup. For me and my setup it just makes the guitar tone sound really unbalanced. I have other guitarist friends with similar octave setups and they all seem to add a mute switch into the chain just for that reason. When I was starting out with this setup I did just use the octave pedal alone, and it really wasn't until I had a few soundmen complaining about a residual hum from the pedal when it was in the off position that I started paying notice... So the mute switch addition solves all that trouble. I hope that helps. I'd say maybe try it out with just the octave pedal alone and see what you think yourself, it might work fine for your setup. What gear are you using at the mo?

@@aodancoynemusic right now I'm using a Martin DX1RAE with an LR Baggs Venue. Because we're a trio (no bass player) I'm looking at getting the Boss OC-5 as I believe players report the tracking to be a bit better. I'm going to try the horizontal pickup for the bass strings into the octave pedal. Makes sense to take out the dry signal so you just have the isolated wet signal to work with on separate track in the PA. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙏

Hi ClarinetSaxful. Ya, I do use it with standard tuning as well and find that it can work well. You just have to be a bit more conscious of when to apply it and what bass notes you want to highlight in each song/tune. The use of palm muting helps a lot in Standard also because it can get a little bit muddy sounding if you're not subtle with it. DADGAD tuning allows a bit more freedom with those open chords to ring out. I'd say give it a try and see what you can make of it. Let me know how you get on! 👍

Hi aodan why is it you need the mute switch for the octave pedal??? Just after ordering a mcilroy a30c! Have you tried the new boss oc5 I don’t think you would need a separate pickup for this . Trying to decide myself what pickups to get I was thinking of the fishman rare earth and K&K pure mini
@aodancoynemusic
@aodancoynemusic 2 года назад
Congrats on the purchase! You can't go wrong with a McIlroy and the a30c is really sweet. Nice choice. Regards the mute pedal, the octave pedal will have a direct signal coming through it even when turned off. So without being able to mute the signal completely it can get quite muddy sounding... The OC3 is generally considered to have a better Polly function than the Oc5. I only really use the octave pedal for the polly function, so the 0c3 is my choice. Ya, I've heard the 0c5 tracks the strings a bit better than the 0c3. But it's far from perfect, and I've heard it failing and getting a nasty sound too often. The cleanest and most reliable bass sound I could find so far is with this setup. Having an extra pickup specifically for the bass, and using the 0c3 polly function. The tracking won't really matter as much as it would if you were just running it through the one line. And then when it comes to pickups, I'm using the Fishman Matrix infinity in my Mcilroy, but my favorite acoustic pickup at the moment is the Fishman rare earth mic blend. Hope that help. No harm in trying out different options though. I've been experimenting for a while and still on the hunt for the perfect setup.

Hi, sorry about the delay in reply, I was away on tour and I'm just catching up on things now. Yes it was actually Fergal Scahill from We Banjo 3 who first introduced this setup to me back when I first started touring Irish festivals in the US. Being a three piece band, it was hard to compete with the 6 or 7 piece bands. So this bass setup (along with adding a stomp box) enabled us to fill up the sound on stage. David and Fergal are up with the best DADGAD Irish guitar players around.

I’m using the TC electronic Sub n’ Up along with the JHS mute switch and Mooer yellow compressor pedal. Fishman Neo D (although finding it harder to find these with a female jack , plenty online with male jacks). I almost prefer this passive pickup to the active version tbh. I have both and although you need to add more gain to the passive version I think it sounds a bit nicer and plus it is much less expensive than the rare earth. I highly recommend the sub n’ up, tracking is perfect. I used to have the OC3 but haven’t looked back since getting the TC pedal

Hi Aodan. I'm using an L R Baggs M1 on a Taylor Big Baby. It's fitted conventionally ie vertically and it's clear as a bell, but I'm struggling to stop the B string ringing and when fingerpicking I have to be mindful of that and adjust my playing. Tries lowering the poles on the B and high E and offsetting the pickup a little, also turning down the high frequencies when recording or playing live through a Zoom Four X pedal. Frustrating to keep getting that ring on the B string in particular. Would be grateful for any recommendations. Cheers.
@aodancoynemusic
@aodancoynemusic 6 месяцев назад
Hi Jack, I've seen people use the M1 and actually take out all the poles except for the low E and A just so the high tones don't ring out like that.. That would probably sort things for you but some pople might find that to be a bit overkill seeing as the M1 is pretty pricey. It used to happen on one of my guitars and I turned down/ played around with the OC-3's polly range level. Setting it at just past the 12 o'clock rage rather than the 3 o'clock range sorted the issue for me without loosing too much off that bass tone. You said you tried turing down the high frequencies also, so they would be the three things I'd try to fix the issue. Hope that helps. Let me know if you find a good solution as it might be handy for others. Cheers!

Hi Peadar, I haven't used the O-C5 myself, I've heard the tone is a bit different from the O-C3 and the tracking is a little iffy. But as I said, I haven't tried it myself. That said, that settings I would try would be Direct level to zero, set the Poly function on, put the -1 OCT level to around the 3o'clock. I don't think the +1 Oct level would sound great for this setup so I'd probably put that to zero. Then I'd test out the -2 Oct range to see what that sounds like. If it didn't sound too bad I'd set it to a level that isn't too in your face. And if it didn't sound great I'd just set it to zero also. Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on. I must get my hands on one and give it a go.
