One question I see asked a lot about the Boss EQ-200: Wtf is MAN mode anyway? The answer to that is... it depends.
The EQ-200 is an awesomely powerful pedal, but is let down by a frustrating user interface with some hidden caveats and dark spots. Watch along and let's shine a light on some of those.

OMFG! WHAT an AMAZINGLY helpful deep-dive!!! 24:25 "In case anyone from Boss is listening..." Well, they REALLY should do, because you've answered so many (and more) questions that I've asked BOSS' help teams since acquiring my pedal in Jan 2019... none of which they could really successfully answer. I agree with you when you say that this pedal is "frustratingly close to being perfect" and this video confirmed my thoughts (fears?) that the apparent inconsistency between the LCD and actual settings is "just the way it is on the #EQ200". That said, your explanations - especially with regards to the non-A/B 'Channel' button settings - have been really helpful. I'll be watching this video a few times because I think I'm going to slightly tweak my current set-up. I split the A and B (pre- and post-) input/outputs in unlinked mode and use my FS-7 to cycle through the 'four' memories as you showed. But I hadn't thought about allocating the EQ-200's dual footswitches to CH-A and CH-B!!! Seems obvious (when you explain it so well) that that's the way I would like to roll going forward. So... THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for putting so much time into making a superb instructional video. I would send links to your deep-dives to #BOSS - they really NEED you on their team in a more official capacity imho.

Helpful stuff. Niche too, nice work! I have my EQ-200 connected to my SY-200 via midi, since the SY-200 has a much bigger, full featured screen with detailed routing menus. I basically use it for all my presets, & my other 200 pedals are slaved to it. You can pull all the synth effect off the signal & have completely clean presets. I'm fairly sure this was the gimmick Boss hoped ppl would fall for (connecting all the 200's together to make Mecha Boss), but it simply works. I was at a point, where I was building a board from ground up, & since I'm also a vocalist, I don't want to fiddle w/my pedals more than I have to. That also allowed me to have an analog drive, except for the 3 presets on the DD-200 that are digital.

I gotta say watching this I’m more and more pleased I went with the source audio eq2. Will try to cook up a comparison video with my typical usage cases. Good playing my friend, great sounds but man is that confusing as hell.
@PedalPlatform
@PedalPlatform 2 года назад
It's simple enough if you keep it simple... I guess the thing that makes the source audio less desirable in the first place (lack of faders) ends up paying off in terms of UI simplification.

This is absolutely amazing! Thanks for all the work you put into this! Especially the frequency analysis is awesome (though I have to ask - I thought that the "flat over the entire spectrum" noise was white noise, and the descending (1/f) noise was pink noise - how does this work in this case?) Also I'm really hoping #BOSS incorporates your points regarding the Firmware upgrade! Cheers - I'm looking forward to future content!
@PedalPlatform
@PedalPlatform 2 года назад
Thank you 🙏🏻Well spotted on the noise colours: I used pink noise because it's not as aggressive sounding when talking over it, and used the slope feature on the audio analyser plugin (set at 3 dB/octave to compensate for the -3 dB/octave drop) and make it look flat for ease of visual reference :)

is it possible to use midi to connect to a synth and have presets saved? so when you turn to a new patch on synth it automatically turns to eq preset for it?

Bro, after I got up and running after seeing your other videos. You come out with this.lol Got one earlier this month. Love it, with the BOSS FS-7!! If you will check you do not need to power the foot switch (FS-7). It seems the TRS Cable provides the power to function. Please see if I am right, please. It does on my set up.
@PedalPlatform
@PedalPlatform 2 года назад
The TRS cable doesn't provide power, but the FS-7 can be used without power in the Momentary FS-5U mode, polarity I - which is exactly what the EQ-200 needs to operate correctly. 😉 In that mode, the power is used exclusively for the LEDs. It's only when you switch mode to Latch, or reverse the polarity, that you really need power. I feel another video coming up 🤣

I've learned so much about this pedal from your videos! One thing I can't seem to find anywhere is if I can do a sweep effect using an expression pedal. I've tried doing opposite eq on A and B and they aren't linked. I have the expression pedal set to B 0-100 but whenever I use the pedal it still acts like a level for both. I want A eq-ed as a lo fi all mids sound and B to be the opposite so when I crank the expression pedal it becomes my normal tone. Any idea if this is achievable and if so, how? Thanks for all the information around this pedal.

Question: If you were using a Plethora X5 in the 4 cable method, where would you personally put the EQ-200 in the chain?

Why is it drastically changing the sound of my amp when I turn the 200 on??? I did a factory reset with the sliders and screen display showing neutral too and it's in manual mode.

Hi, Thinking to use this as a master eq, for all instruments, before final tweaking in the DAW. Apart from the limited frequency range, would there be any other issues?
@PedalPlatform
@PedalPlatform 2 года назад
Would you use it as the last item on the chain before the interface? What would be the specific reasons to use it instead of a plugin once inside the DAW? I'm asking mostly because I'd want to avoid as many AD/DA conversions as possible, even with great converters such as the ones BOSS are using in the EQ-200. On the other hand, tweaking physical faders instead of moving a mouse around is infinitely more fun, and something cool might come out of it - so just try it :)

@@PedalPlatform Hi, I have ended up trying it, and seems like will be more hassle than just using plugins. Without connecting to a DAW, I have only managed to be able to input the Boss eq onto one track at a time, into my audio interface. I am heavily considering getting a mixer, but not sure if that should be a priority. But, yeah definitely way more enjoyable than tweaking eq parameter's on a computer. Main reason for wanting it, is to have more hands on control over the sound, before recording. So that the mix/initial recordings are pretty much ready for mastering, and then using the DAW to touch up any issues, or problem frequencies. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. Thank you.
@greedygringoprospecting6941
how do you default it. ???
@PedalPlatform
@PedalPlatform Год назад
Plug it into the power supply / put batteries on it, unplug the cable from Input A if you have one in there; Press and hold down both the footswitches, and insert a cable into the input jack A: the display will read FACTORY RESET; Let go of the footswitches, then press the Memory (right) footswitch to confirm; When the screen shows "Completed", unplug the cable from input A and plug it again. Hope this helps!

I've had this EQ pedal for a couple months now and I have tried to use this pedal playing LIVE and it just doesn't work for me. I am selling it and going back to my modded GE-7. Why you might ask? Several reasons.... that I've taken the time to list below. Hopefully this will help somebody out there who's looking at buying this pedal.... 1) COMPLICATED ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE: When adjusting the EQ for the environment I'm playing in, you have to save the new adjustments every time. For example: If you adjust the sliders for M1 (to adjust for the acoustic environment you're in) If you don't SAVE your adjustment before you switch to the next (M2, M3, M4, etc.. memory presets,) your adjustments will be lost and when you return to M1 it will be back to the original setting you had. This is very frustrating if you use more than one memory setting at a time during a performance. I tend to make slight EQ adjustments throughout my night. With this pedal I have to make sure I go in and SAVE any adjustment every time before switching to the next M2, M3, etc.... 2) DOESN'T HAVE A WARM SOUND: My old GE-7 pedals are both analog and the EQ200 is digital. The EQ200 is very quiet with no "hiss" but the sound is more "brash" or "high endy". Most of my adjustments with this pedal are me trying to warm the sound up and take the "Tinny High End out". 3) COMPLICATED TO OPERATE: If you've used any Boss products (like drum machines, and other equipment) from the 80's-2000's, you know what I'm talking about. You HAVE to have the manual to figure whatever crazy sequence of button pushes and knob twisting codes you have to do to get it to do what you want. Not intuitive or "user friendly" at all. You have to really commit to it and focus to get it to do what you want. The EQ200 is definitely a part of this family of products by Boss. 4) NEEDS AN EXTRA FOOT SWITCH (button). So many of the programming issues could have been fixed by adding one more foot switch to this pedal. This way you could scroll up and back in the M1,M2,M3, etc... presets. The ON/OFF switch could have been in the top center of the pedal. 5) TOO BIG: (especially without the 3rd foot switch). It takes up too much room on my already crowded pedalboard. The size would be ok if it had an extra foot switch and an extra display (see below). 6) DISPLAY: When you are playing live with this pedal and you look down at the display window, it just shows the EQ frequency wave (which is a must), but it doesn't show which Memory preset you're on (M1,M2,M3, etc..) You can only find out which one your on by pressing the Memory foot switch and going to the next preset (and now that you've done that, you have to keep pushing the Memory Foot Switch until you come back around to where you started). I KNOW that you can reprogram to reassign the ON/OFF Foot switch to scroll back, but then the ON/OFF doesn't operate the same. (NOTE: the other way to see which preset your on is to look at the red LED lights that show the first 4 presets) An additional display would solve this issue or adding the Memory Preset into the existing display box with the EQ frequency wave . 7) ANGLE OF THE FOOT SWITCHES: The shape of the pedal, would be much better for stomping on the Foot Switches if it were just a simple Square shape instead of the tapered front end. If you place it by itself on the floor (not on a pedal board) or if you placed it at the bottom of your pedal board it would work fine, but if you need to place the EQ200 in the middle or top of your pedal board, the foot switches are too low to easily tap with your foot without unintentionally hitting the other pedals around it. I had to add a riser to use with this pedal to avoid this issue. 8) PRICE: $289 for a pedal that has this many design issues is not worth it to me. As I mentioned, I usually run (2) GE-7 pedals and I would have ran (2) of these EQ200's but the price stopped me from doing that. Two of these EQ200's would have been $580 plus tax and shipping. That is too much in my opinion. IN CONCLUSION: This pedal might have it's place in some situations (like recording) but I do not recommend this pedal if you are a musician who plays in a LIVE stage setting. It's just got too many issues that don't work in that environment. Boss really needs to do a RE-DO on this pedal. I'm sure there's somebody who will disagree with me and they love playing live with this pedal, continuously pressing buttons and tapping the foot switches, but I've played 15 or so live gigs with it and it doesn't work for ME, especially for the price of this pedal. Thats my 2.5¢ Good Luck :)
