Almost 3 years in with it and it's probably the most important pedal on my board. Continuously inspired. Anyone with a handful of pedals would benefit greatly from it because it's basically an exponential modifier lol

I now use the 'separate' to go through a nemesis delay in stereo (loop8) and then split the L side going to a foxrox tzf flanger to one amp and the R side through an empress phaser to another amp...sounds demented af

I recently built my pedalboard with the ES-8 and when I was manually setting up the patches, it was a doozer! With the ES-8 Editor, it's so much easier to setup.

Hi! Love your channel and videos - really helped to understand the ES-8. However, I have a strange problem with my ES-8, the left output of ES-8 gives lower output signal level. The difference between left and right channels are around 20db - that`s a lot! Any ideas why? P.S. All cables are good, there`s definitely no problem loops per se.

I've owned an ES-8 for several months in anticipation of building that dream pedal board but put it off because this thing looked so complicated. I just updated my firmware and setup the pc editor and I really regret not doing all this much sooner. Thanks to MBMH for the videos on updating and operating, so helpful!

Thank you Man bun Metal Head. I have used this several times. I just updated to version 2.04 and some things have changed slightly, but using your video again, I was able to complete the upgrade. The only difference with this latest update was that I needed to select the files before hitting send. The first time I did not select the files before hitting send, and the updSMFJ looked like it was working, but nothing actually got sent. This is different than before, so when I didn't get the OK on the ES-8 I was a bit nervous to unplug it. But I did it anyway, and this time I selected the files before hitting send, and that worked just fine. Thanks again, Jack

@rgb205

I suppose the best way for me to distill down the many questions I have would be, what does setting up a wet/dry/wet rig look like using the ES8. I ordered 2 Katana 50 combos to go with my Suhr Bader 18 and can't wait to hear what it sounds like. I'm still trying to grasp an understanding of everything and anything I need to click or un-click in the editor. I do know that in order for me to use my Nemesis & (2) H9's daisy chained (midi), they have to have their own channel to specify which pedal is being used. For now until the 2 amps come in I'm just trying to do the 4CM and get familiar with tweaking the editor. I was able to create 8 patches but something is wrong because I'm getting nothing from Loop 7-Nemesis or Loop 8 - (2) H9's. Driving me crazy...thanks dude
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 7 лет назад
Sounds like you're going to have quite the versatile rig soon! Sounds like you need to do some troubleshooting. The first thing I'd do is move your Nemesis and H9's to different loops to see if the problem persists. If it does, then there's an issue somewhere with the wiring to the pedals, probably. That or maybe the MIDI messages being sent to the pedals (assuming only have that set up). If the you are able to get sound from the pedals in different loops, then there might be a setting that needs adjusted in the ES-8. Channel 7 and 8 are both stereo capable (7 is mono send, mono/stereo return, and 8 is mono/stereo send or return). Hopefully this helps a little.
@rgb205
@rgb205 7 лет назад
Thank you for responding...it helps a lot. I've made a ton of progress but still have weird issues. For now I am set up in the 4CM until the Katana's arrive. I am getting signals from loop 7 & 8 and have been able to create midi patches but something weird happens when I try to create a patch on the Nemesis and can't for the life of me figure out how to only use one of the two H9's for any given loop Nemesis is in loop 7 -midi 1-channel 1...H9#1 is loop 8- midi-2-channel 2- H9#2 is in loop 8 also- midi-3-channel 3- both H9's are daisy chained with audio cable and ALL 3 pedals are daisy chained with midi cable. On the Nemesis the 4 presets I have saved are #1 Tape #2 Digital #3 Shifter #4 Helix While in ES8 patch #1 "Clean" w/ loop 7 engaged (Nemesis) when I get to the PC section for the Nemesis, if I put 1 and hit write x3 there is no issue as the Nemesis engages the 1st preset saved within the Nemesis .. I can tap on any other patch (2-8) and when I tap on Patch 1, I get the clean signal with the Tape delay from the Nemesis. When I go through the same routine but use #2-3 or 4 for PC, Patch #1 on the ES8 will not engage or light up and depending on the PC number I choose, for example PC 3, as soon as I hit write x3, patch #1 won't engage and automatically jumps to patch 3 on the ES8. I have no idea what's causing this. With the H9's I can have a Blackhole reverb on H9#1 and Streets delay on H9#2. But if I only want the Blackhole reverb and nothing on #2, I can't figure out how to have #2 not engage. I assumed that because each H9 has their own (midi 2 & Midi 3) channel, that I could specify which one I want turned on. I'm wondering if I have to create a blank patch on either H9 for when I only want one of them to be engaged. I am new to using midi and it has been a challenging learning process..
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 7 лет назад
Hmmm, I'm a little confused when you say midi 1 channel 1, etc. Each pedal should be assigned to a "MIDI channel" (1, 2, 3) etc. That also requires you to set the MIDI channel in each pedal. Also make sure you have MIDI THRU set up on all your pedals to ensure the MIDI messages from the ES-8 do not stop at the first pedal. When setting up the ES-8 to send the MIDI signals, make sure to use the "Patch MIDI 1-8" function and not the "Assign 1-12" function. When setting up the Patch MIDI to make a Program Change, verify the "Ctl CC's" are OFF. This can send CC changes to the pedals that you do not want. For trying to force a bypass via MIDI, I'd suggest looking at the user manuals. More than likely there should be CC and Val # associated with doing so. Good luck.

In case this helps anyone, i found out the way to do bank copies in the librarian view: You can ctrl select an entire row and hit copy (don't select the "bank" # cell). Then select a single cell elsewhere and hit paste. it will copy all rows from left to right into the new cells. This seems obvious, but i didn't discover it at first cause i was trying to copy to multiple rows vertically, which is not possible. It only works horizontally. Let me know if i missed something along these lines? Any other tips for ease of use? I wish you could edit text by tabbing and entering between cells like in Excel. :( But still way way better than using the buttons on the device to key in text.

I'm not new to midi but... I am new in regards to diving in deeper! I have the Boss ES8 and trying to control the Eventide Micropitch Delay & Strymon IRIDIUM - I am honestly at a loss for savings patches on the Micropitch Delay & IRIDIUM in one of the 127 locations - I have been successful in turning on the favorite switch on the IRIDIUM and accessing the 5 presets on the Micropitch Delay - Let me give you an example of my issue - First of all when switching from one patch to another on the ES8 there is what I call a hiccup or a pause. For instance, when I change from bank 1 number1 to bank 1 number 2 - After watching your video I am understanding assignments which eliminates the hiccup or pause but, this is where I am having issues - I have a 52ms slap back delay on my Timeline and want the use the Micropitch Delay(Set to Midi Channel 3) for a longer 500ms delay when I kick into a lead - I want to be able to select bank 2 number 1 with the Micropitch Delay off and when I select number 6 to activate it (which is turned off and set up with assignments) to turn on the Micropitch Delay to preset 3 and when I select number 6 again to deactivate it I want the Micropitch Delay to turn off - I can't seem to get this done, could you offer any assistance? I was hoping you would address the new "Link" function in the v.2 firmware, either in your video about installing the v.2 update, or your video about the Editor. When the new "Link" function came out in v.2 of firmware, I thought I could buy a 2nd ES-8 and link it to the ES-8 I own, to extend the number of loops/patches I could control with my 1st ES-8. I asked Boss, which said the Link function doesn't work that way and won't allow to to do what I wanted. Boss said with "Link" off, and using MIDI messages, the 1st ES-8 can control the 2nd ES-8 and I can do what I wanted. I suppose I'd mix the sound from the different pedals connected to both units by using one of the send/return loops on each ES-8 unit. I'm interested in whether you ever tried that or know of anyone who has ever tried that, and how that worked and exactly how that was set up. What I'm also curious about is if the "Link" function is turned on, which means the parameters on each ES-8 unit would have to be identical according to Boss, what are real world applications of using the Link function? I have not found anywhere on the Internet anyone who actually used 2 ES-8 units together (using either MIDI or Link to connect them), and I have not found any instructions or discussion about how the Link function actually works/what it does/what it is used for (and Boss itself wouldn't answer my question about what the Link function is used for).

Great video! I've been looking for something like this since the new firmware/editor software came out! I don't have an ES-8 yet, but I've just about decided that its my next gear purchase (gotta save and sell some other stuff). I'm curious to know your opinion on the Librarian feature - My ideal use case would be to use ~one bank per song (0.01 = Intro, 0.02 = Verse, etc), program a bunch of songs in (50 or 60), and then each week (I play for worship at my church) use the Librarian to move the songs I need to the first 7 banks (0-6). From everything I've read and now seen in your video, it looks like that would be feasible right? Also, do you know how long the patch names can be? Thanks again for a great video and for being the first one I could find!!
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 7 лет назад
Stephen Washburn, I'm glad the video helped you out. The ES-8 is a fantastic piece of gear. Once you get it, you'll wonder why you've waited so long. I think the Librarian can do exactly what you want. So much freedom! I believe the titles are limited to 16 characters (the length of the LCD).

Thanks! I've been using a Joyo PXL-Live for coming up on a year, and it has absolutely sold me on programmable loop/switching and while its been awesome for the price, its obviously WAY less powerful, and programming (and RE-programming) song sounds each week is starting to wear out! So just about time for an upgrade! 🤘

@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 3 года назад
Depends on how you have the MIDI chain set up. If there is nothing going to the MIDI IN of the ES-8, that's easy enough. Otherwise you'd have to unplug it so you can connect to the editor. On the OUT side, you should be able to connect to the MIDI OUT of the last device in the chain. If the last device doesn't have a MIDI OUT (some don't) you'll have to unplug the MIDI OUT from a device in the chain, furtherest down the line if possible. Hope that helps.

Man, I have the ES-5, I suppose there is an editor for that as well? I'm so incredibly computer illiterate tho, I doubt I would know what to do with it. I'd probably spend 90% of my time trying to figure out what this stuff means and 10% actually playing music. I bought the Disaster Area DCP-8EZ b/c it has 8 loops and looked like a simpler, more straightforward unit. But apparently, it is designed as a kind of accessory for a MIDI controller. I don't have any MIDI pedals. What would be cool is to use them together so that I can have all 13 of my pedals on the board, controlled by just a couple of switches. Damned if I know how to do it. I'm old, computers are confusers to me.
@mattgilbert7347
@mattgilbert7347 7 лет назад
Actually, the editor doesn't look too confusing. It's mostly the ES-8/5 editing functions on a PC. You could use that separate function in the ES-8 to run wet/dry. I would love to do that with my current set up but the ES-5 only has one dedicated output. Maybe use both switchers and an ABY...not sure how to do that tho

I always plug my Roland UM-One to the MIDI IN of the ES-8 (because that's always open) and the MIDI OUT of the last pedal in the chain, which is my Strymon Timeline and I never have a problem. You could use a MIDI splitter if you need to but if you're using it for the ES-8 MIDI IN make sure whatever else is connected to the splitter isn't sending anything at the same time or you could run into some issues.

@@ManBunMetalHead thanks for the response. I was unable to make programming work that way. Today I bought a midi solution 1 in 4 out box. At first five tries connecting, es8 said problem and my md, dd, and rv 500 series pedals said midi error and es8 would not connect. But the fifth time suddenly out of nowhere, it started working.

on the es-8 why only two exp-output jacks; vs 8 ? I have to Y cable if more need it ; right ? i will use the boss dual exp pedal but... each pedal might use the pedal for different things; depending on whats selected. so Midi can control that ?

So my desktop editor has stopped working on Windows 10 for some reason. I'm guessing Windows did some update that has screwed it up but yeah, I've uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail and can't find a single thing about it online anywhere so I was hoping you might have heard of this issue and had a fix for it? Last time I used it was a couple months ago and it worked fine. Redid my board yesterday so I went to open it to change some patches and no go, won't open. The icon opens on the taskbar but not the monitor and when you hover over the icon on the taskbar it's blank white?

After spending a couple weeks diving in the ES-8, I'm learning it's pretty programmable to your needs. Loving it so far. I did have a question that I'm having trouble finding the answer. I downloaded and installed the Editor and that works well, however, how do I link my Eventide H9 along with the Editor? I seem to have to pull my midi connection to the H9 to hook up the midi to the computer. I have a Behringer audio interface with midi. Great videos and appreciate the time you put into them. Looking forward to more.
@ManBunMetalHead

You should be able to just include everything in the MIDI chain. ES8 MIDI OUT -> H9 MIDI IN H9 MINI OUT -> Behringer MIDI IN Behringer MIDI OUT -> ES8 MIDI IN

You should have everything set up correctly in the editor. I would check the settings on the H9. My guess is that you have MIDI Thru turned OFF. Try turning that ON.

Hmmm, not sure how else to help you. If you take the H9 out of the chain and you're not getting any issues, the errors you are getting are somehow related to the H9.

What do those little boxes that turn orange when selected do? The are in the parameter editing area just to the left of button names in the CTL/EXP section and to the left of the assignment numbers in the ASSIGNx-y section. Changing them triggers a WRITE, but I haven't found out exactly what they do. They don't seem to affect my patches.

They are used to change what the switches do and write assigns. I have a video on assigns that should clear it all up for you. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jFiOzIm7zOk.html

Your vids on this are super helpful. I just found out about the update and editor and really want to give it a whirl, but I have a lot of work saved on the ES-8 already. Does updatin wipe out your patches? If so, is there a way to save your patches in the old firmware, update, and reimport? I want to do the testing myself, but clearing out my patches would eliminate months of work.
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 7 лет назад
There's little to no chance the update will wipe your data. I didn't have a problem myself, but you never know. You'd probably be okay, but it might be worth looking into doing a bulk data dump, if you're worried. I believe there's some info on how to do that in the ES-8 manual, but have never done so myself.

I haven't used Windows XP in years. I used to use a M-Audio MIDISport 2x2, which I think works with Windows XP. Pretty sure I used it in this video. It works with the ES-8 but is a little buggy, still usable though. Not sure if it's still available but you might be able to find a used one.

Can i use a dual expression pedal for two different pedals; or one channel for total pedal volume control. the manual on the es-8 has two exp in; two outs plug 4 control. NOT CLEAR IF th cv outs and exp out is dedicated to what its plugged into ! Why not have expression inputs be assigned to the different pedals that support exp. pedals; but fed thru the es-8 rather than the exp input on each specific pedal. the exp pedal does different thinks to my pitchfork vs tremelo box, perhaps a volume control. But the ES-8 does not seem to have that now; only two exp out; vs being able to supply Qty-8; outputs if you had 8 pedals to support that. OK. next version of the ES--8A !!

Is there a cut off in sound when switching patches in memory mode? Do the delay trails and reverb carry over? (I know you showed how to enable the trails in your video, but does it actually sound seamless without cutting out?)
@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 4 года назад
There is no sound cut off when switching patches as long as the "Patch Change Time" parameter is set to 0ms. For some reason, it was set to something like 5ms when I first got it, which created a noticeable cut out. Delay and reverb trails work no problem as long is you enable them in the patch.

@ManBunMetalHead
@ManBunMetalHead 7 лет назад
Have you updated the firmware on the ES-8? When you do the factory reset, I assume it reverts to the previous firmware version (v1.0X). To use the ES-8 Editor, you need V2.00 or higher. If you haven't updated the firmware or need to check what version is currently installed, check out this video to do so, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g4VQfLvBbII.html&lc=z12mtfgbipikcl3vq232slwp2wb3frv3b.

I took a look at the V3M manual, and on the back of the amp it says "NOT FOR MIDI" next to the footswitch control port. I'm assuming the amp is not actually using MIDI to switch channels, but instead using that 5-pin MIDI jack and one cable to the footswitch because it's easier than having 2 or 3 TRS jacks and cables. That being said, you could still get the ES-8 to control it, however, you'd need some modified cabling. More than likely, the way the amp switches channels is by connecting one of the MIDI pins to ground, which essentially what the CTL 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6 jacks do on the ES-8. You'd have to find a wiring diagram or pin out the connector yourself, which I would not recommend unless you have at least some moderate electronics skill. Then you'd have to make yourself some custom cables, or possibly find somewhere that can make them for you. Good luck!
