The Boss GT1 is (I think?) just about the cheapest Modeler that you can buy. I wanted to see how easy it is to use, and whether you can get decent tones out of it. It also is a USB interface, has a looper on board....I dunno. The screen is a bit on the outdated side vs the Nux MG30 or Valeton which are a bit more expensive but a bit more modern feeling UI wise?

One thing to note that is absent from the Boss GT1 that the other competitors in this price range can do - the GT1 CANNOT LOAD IRS
@zoomzoom3950
@zoomzoom3950 Год назад
The GT-1 is based on GT-100 tech, before Boss was using IRs. Old COSM tech. 😁 Zoom G1Xon was out about the same time, and cost less IIRC

With all the new IR loaders out these days, or as a simple front end to laptop this can be worked around. You ever tried the TC Impulse pedal? Has a really great boost and a fun little screen to play with. The cheapest gear I know of that does load IR’s would be that Cuvave little Cadbury’s bar style modeler. But I dunno I think this little box could be gigged. Great fun messing with it.

I've been using the Boss GT-1 since it very first came out, and I still use it to this day. This unit has NEVER let me down, I've used it on countless gigs, running straight to the PA/Mixer and for recording - it's great. The important aspect of getting any effects unit to sound good, and perform its possible best, is to set it up properly, before doing anything else. The Output Select has to match the equipment you're connecting the GT-1 to, and the best patches you can get, are the ones you learn to create yourself. The Factory Presets can be good for a short while, as you learn to dial in effects and parameters, but creating your own patches will allow this unit to really shine through. There are plenty of options and possibilities and only your imagination sets the limit. For what it is, the GT-1 is an excellent piece of gear! If anyone's interested, I run a dedicated Boss GT-1 RU-vid Channel, with many tutorials and sound samples. My Channel can be found here: ru-vid.com Thanks for the video. Cheers.

Do I need a DI box to connect it directly to the Mixer?
@GuitarNTabs
@GuitarNTabs Год назад
@@yukiamerica - No, not necessarily. If you're fairly close to the mixer, when performing, playing or rehearsing then you can simply connect the GT-1's outputs to the channels on the mixer. The point where you might need a DI is when you're placed further away from the mixer, running longer cable runs, this can cause degradation of the signal and your EQ-spectrum. Personally, when I play live, I always run my pedalboard through the DI and to the mixer, and I've never had an issue with that. I hope this helps. Please do let me know if you need anything else. Best regards.

It's been two years since I acquired a Boss GT-1 on the used market, here in Brazil. I was in a difficult phase and couldn't spend a lot (not that I'm in a good phase now, financially speaking), but anyway, at that time it was what I could acquire to make a sound. Recently, a Mooer GE200 and a Hotone Ampero One (both used products) passed through my hands. Even though both had excellent features, mainly amp modeling, I passed them on and continued with the GT-1. Today, I use the Boss GT-1 for my modulations, delays and reverbs. My overdrive, fuzz and amp modeling comes from analog/digital pedals. But I confess that I often find myself using only the GT-1. I really like the features it provides. The tuning drop system is excellent, as is the feedback function. I also love the wah wah and whammy, things I didn't like on the GE200 and Ampero One. Amplifier and cabinet simulation are not plug and play. You have to turn a lot of knob to get a good sound. High Gain I only got using an equalizer, which makes me use one of the modulation blocks (could have a global EQ)... But even so it's a solid product and way ahead of its time when released. I'm definitely going to buy some other multi-effects in the future, but the GT-1 will still be here, with me. Cheers from Brazil.

"It sounds like me." EXACTLY! For $200 new & half that used, it's an amazing sounding & very capable piece of gear. You can dial in **anything** to sound bad, from this to the highest dollar rig you can find, tube or otherwise. There ARE pro-level sounds in this unit, it's up to YOU to learn the unit(not hard at all) & dial em in according to your guitar, playing style, etc. Josh Munday's videos released when the GT-1 was first introduced are an excellent starting point, or end point, if they suit your scenario. Tip: using Audacity(freeware recording program), take a "visual snapshot" of a guitar tone with the frequency spectrum analyzer. Highlight a portion of a song, preferably with the guitar isolated, then analyze it. This will give you an exact frequency 'roadmap' that you can then use to dial in the EQ in the GT-1 to achieve a certain tone. Nowadays there is software that will do this FOR you, but here's how to do it yourself for FREE on your computer.

I've had a GT1 for three years and it's great. It does everything I need more than well enough. Runs four hours on four rechargeable batteries. Fits in my gig bag pocket. Added a small two button switch some pedal maker on Reverb built for more flexibility. The Tone Studio software if very similar to the Katana's so many of us know and is easy to use. It's small enough it's not cluttering up my house. I've used it hundreds of hours to practice at night with headphones. Once you set up a few basic patches you like, it's easy enough to copy and modify them for particular uses. But it's also difficult enough to use that you won't find yourself always messing with the modeler instead of playing. I know there are better modelers but I've never really needed more. Tip, turn off the LEDs for the footswitches to significantly increase the battery life. You can still tell what effects are on by the small red LEDs on the menu buttons.

I’ve been using one for a couple of years. I use it in “pedal board” mode where I have a basic sound (Clean Twin) with a little reverb and delay, the left button is a clean boost (an EQ with everything set flat but a volume kick), the middle button is modulation (I have three identical patches except one has chorus there, one has tremolo, and one has Leslie), with the third button being fuzz (which also turns off the reverb). The volume pedal turns into a vintage wah if I stomp on it. I bought it for travelling but, frankly, it’s worked so well that I use it for most gigs I play-I only pull out the Deluxe Reverb in the studio. It’s that good.

Great Video John! I have a GT-1 for a while now and I like the clean sounds very much, the amp Natural Clean and the Blues Driver are very good, but with heavy sounds I think it aways sound a little bit harsh, even with EQ. Maybe its only a matter with the speakers simulation that could be solved with an IR loader. But, as you said, it is a great choice, especially in places that guitar gear are over expensives like here in Brazil where I live.

I have one of these as well as a HX Stomp. I like them both, but find it much quicker and easier to dial in a tone on the Boss GT-1. I always find myself tweaking the patches on the Stomp as there are just far too many parameters, and find it much harder to get a tone I'm happy with. The same process just seems so simple to me with the GT1. You should try the Tera Echo on the GT-1. It's a nice ambient effect which I think you'd enjoy. It also has a hold feature which you can assign to a footswitch.

Same here! I ended up selling my HX Stomp, go figure! Granted, I'm a bedroom player & I've backed all my patches in Helix Native so there's that, but you're absolutely spot on with the user interface. It can't get any simpler than the GT1. If Boss were to introduce a new iteration of this product, they don't need to reinvent the wheel or so to speak. Just add an IR loader, FX loop, MIDI capabilities, and maybe add more blocks. Even in 2022, the GT1 is an absolute sleeper of a multi effects unit.

That input change you did was genuinely mind-blowing, and I am now questioning every decision I've made and every opinion I've had since the mid nineties! I especially know a young stoner rock/sludge metal band with talent but no money or good live sound, and if this does that thing they could sell a lot if not all of their not-so-great live gear and get this thing and maybe Harley Benton Amaroks for the money

I got one of these this summer and it actually punches HUGELY above its weight. This is the same as the pocket GT, yet you’ve got direct access to the whole chain and can actually do a huge amount with the assigns or a dual momentary switch. Biggest draw for me is that this thing runs on AA batteries, pulls next to nothing and fits in just about any bag. Like most boss stuff there is a good degree of preset spillover, so unlike the stomp you can flick through presets without gaps. For the price, this thing is actually a beautiful little DSP bump to the hxstomp. Pairs extremely well with helix. You may want to give the pocket GT a look at, these two are fully compatible which is rare for boss, and you’ll find an absolutely massive community of users around the world. Great little pedal platform too.

I compared the GT-1 with the GT-1000 Core and picked the GT-1 for it's more natural sounding reverbs, it's simpler signal chain (I don't need all of the flexibility in the 1000), and the GT-1 has 3 limiters that the 1000 Core just doesn't have. It just so happens that I very much like using the UREI 1178 limiter in the GT-1 for my clean pedal steel tone, and the GT-1000 Core has nothing like it. I just want to point out that it’s so stupid/annoying that Boss puts the Tera Echo as a delay on this unit, and on their other delay units, but then in the GT-1k they put it in the Reverb block. Also, I believe the main difference between this and the GT-1k is that you don’t have the 3 signals in it to create parallel paths, or do you? The processing sounds a little cheap as well compared to the GT-1k.

@@Serkan.Korkmaz I've spent a lot of time with the MX5. I almost returned it because of those lousy presets. I'm glad I dug in and hunkered down with it. After dialing in all my own rigs I can't see getting rid of it now. I haven't owned anything that sounds any better, for any price. I use dual amps, dual cabs, 2 compressors and 2 delays on almost every preset and still have room for more effects, etc.

@@Serkan.Korkmaz wow what a coincidence. I had Kemper Stage for around two years and I sold it not a long time ago because it’s too big and heavy for me. I didn’t even listen to stock presets. I hooked up my MX5 to my PC and deleted every factory preset. I built my own preset from scratch and they sound amazing.

I had one of these for a while when I was getting back into guitar after a loooong hiatus and didn't want to spend a lot of money in case I didn't stick with it. This plus a BlackStar HT5 (I bought a Mk I for the same price as a Katana 50 as the Mk II had just come out) got me really nice tones that were really inspiring to play with for not a lot of money at all. If you're on a really tight budget I highly recommend them.

I am a bit new to this. Can someone tell me, what exactly does the output setting do 4:37 for line/ phones. How does it differ from others and when am i supposed to select that ?

You want line to feed to a mixing board or to an amp effects return loop. Phones I would suspect means headphones.

That’s the thing with the Gt1 - out of the box it’s not actually all that great. But if you sit down with it for a while and tweak it you can get some very useful usable tones 👍

All the videos I’ve seen show this multi fx unit has great sounds but non of them mention the problem it doesn’t have option to store the patches in banks which in my opinion is the greatest deal breaker for this unit. 😢

GT-1 was the same tech as tech as the GT-100. I replaced my GT-100 with a GT-1 so I could reduce the size with my SY-300. Replaced the GT-1 with GT-1000 and SY-300 with SY-1000, still have the GT-1 and SY-300.

I have had a GT1 for around 4 years now and it’s a great bit of kit…..I think that too much is made of effects. A good player will sound great with an average guitar absolutely amp…….All the kit in the world won’t turn you into a better player…..once you get to a decent standard then you can worry about effects.
