WOW man!! YESSSSSIR that is EXACTLY what I was hoping my MS-3 could do; I had literally sat it in "the pile" in favor of a Walrus R1; which i'm struggling to dial in. Thank you so much for the "specifics" of getting the components to work together.
Cool and informative vids. I’m on this kick all of a sudden where I’m begining to follow 5 watt worlds motto of the most sound with the least gear and have stumbled on the MS-3. I’m looking at using either my Tonex pedal for amps or amplitude/laptop and powered studio speakers. The MS-3 fits in perfect with its suite of quality effects and some of my own pedals in the loops mainly an eq pedal and a compressor. Cant wait to get started. That’s for the inspiration.
I hear that ! And you’re most welcome, that was the goal to inspire some creativity and get good use out of our gear we have vs always chasing the next cool greatest toy. I just last week purchased a Nicama V2 preamp (for iPad and/or camera input $28 and I can plug it directly into my Sony camera phantom power good mic for remote recording) and pulled my old V-Tone Behrinnger GDI21 amp modeler pedal out of closet put 9v in, dialed up nice tweed sound and now have my self a sweet little porta studio and having tons fun w garage band. (So i can get out of the dungeon/studio and upstairs with the sunlight! ) With many guitar choices in the studio I often find I have the most fun plugging into my Peavy bandit amp. Go figure. I also run a compressor on my board with the MS-3, the internal is fine but I like to keep my fx1 & 2 slots available. Good luck - let us know how the Tonex works out, I run a rather unique setup w/a fender boost/preamp into carvin power amp > mic cabs with my main rig but am interested at some point to try the boss IR-2 in my available loop on MS3.
Here's another vid in my Boss MS-3 deep dive series: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8I3pLWk097Q.htmlsi=ifCX88OUvmHiEJqq Boss MS-3 Deep Dive: 7 Tap Delay, Can it UD-STOMP like Allan Holdsworth?
static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/MS-3_eng03_W.pdf - PG 4 of manual - can control x2 targets ctrl 1/TIP, cntrl 2/ring so TRS plug > split can control 2 targets. See diagram in manual. Good luck!
is it possible to use stereo pedals into MS-3 loops? For example by utilizing 2 patch returns and splitting them in the system to go only to L channel on return 1 and only R channel on return 2? There are stereo outputs, but I'm worried that all the loop returns are merged into one mono signal path, with no option to really use external pedals in stereo.
No, everything before the noise gate including loops are mono, so any fx used prior the loop blocks are forced mono as well. The loop blocks were intended for 4 cable method, dirt peds or other mono pedals, and preamps/boosts etc. Any external stereo fx like my loopers I put at very end of my chain post stereo fx (rev/delay), right before my amp- this way I can loop dry signals or wet - and play loop without it being affected by bringing in more rev/delay w/cc pedal. It’s a powerful unit but NO pan or split paths etc.
Here is the similar goal/video I mentioned : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-baAqw3VryZ8.htmlsi=4dhCCiIFr0OLIIlQ could reverb from the BOSS RV-500 that inspired me to go after my patch.
Love me some rush! The fun intention of the vid was to push the limits of the ms-3 to achieve great modern ambient sounds in the wheelhouse of Strymon etc. > not so much to compare/compete directly with the powerful dedicated rev./ambient pedals like RV-200 but use what we have, our MS-3 to push the boundaries of what it can do in that sound landscape. While the dedicated rev/ambient units like RV-200 can do these sounds well with more options, the MS-3 can achieve great ambient sounds while also being a powerful all-in-one full rig and all it’s other features - so it’s kind of apples n oranges. I wouldn’t buy the ms-3 as just a reverb pedal, no way. Size or other considerations.. if you get my meaning. ;0) *side note, this sound I created was inspired by a plate reverb preset made by a RU-vidr with the RV-500. cheers.
