Where would the pedal industry be without the innovations of BOSS? I'm an unashamed BOSS fanboy and here's 20min of video to prove it.

My dad was a commercial airline pilot who frequently flew to Japan in the '70s and '80s. He came to know the owners of some of the music stores in Tokyo when he was there on layovers, and they kept him in the loop on all of the new technology at the time - including the first Tascam 144 when it was first released. My dad was very supportive of my guitar playing and musical ambitions, and on one of his trips (in '81 or '82) he came back with three BCB-6 cases filled with all of the various Boss pedals at the time....and even more followed in subsequent trips! This was typical overkill for my dad, but apparently one of the store owners sold him things for less than half of what they would have cost in Europe at the time. He bought me all of the Boss pedals and simply said, "I didn't know which ones you'd find useful, so I thought I'd let you decide for yourself...and the ones you don't want you can just give them to your friends or something." I did just that - kept the ones I liked and then gave many of the others away. I'll always have a soft spot for Boss pedals...and the other Boss products as well, as I had many of them as well at some point. I only wish I'd kept more of those original pedals because I basically had them all, and now many are worth a small fortune. Anyway, Viva Boss and here's thinking of my dad who truly was an amazing father. He went for overkill and spoilt me it's true, but it was just because he loved that his young son was making music and he wanted to show his love and support. That will always be inextricably linked with Boss pedals, amongst other things, in my mind. 😊

Lol, I remember saying this almost exact thing as a comment when I first started watching this channel like 3 years ago.... and since then I've no joke seen easily at least 100 other people also post essentially this exact same comment as well. Including the part about how that makes them trust him, & want to support his company/ buy his pedals..... sooooo yeah, I'd say actually it's a freaking incredible business model. Who'd ever guess, you can actually be successful at business, while also being an actual decent human being!!! So if its not necessary to have a successful business, I suppose that means a lot of people out there just enjoy being slimy- cutthroaty-backstabby-corporate- weasel-parasitic-"influencer"-sociopathic-cvmbubbles.

@@atomicfront There is no way he makes more from RU-vid than making pedals. His company has 40 employees and he only has a quarter million subscribers. I always assumed that there are still people out there who like spending good money on pedals, especially boutique pedals. JHS does make a quality pedal that speaks for itself, so I think they are doing alright without undercutting their competition. JHS also has a version of most popular pedals for the people who want to support them but want a RAT or a TS808.

The Smiths pretty much exclusively used boss pedals throughout their career. Johnny Marr is my absolute favorite guitarist, I think he and Robert Smith were the best of the eighties. He used a CE-2 when he was using amps other than the Roland JC120. I love that jangly, chimey sound. Lush also used boss pedals almost exclusively, their albums Gala and Spooky are excellent, particularly love “De-Luxe” and “Nothing Natural”. Blur used a vb-2 on tracks like “Chemical World” from “Parklife”. Lastly Slowdive used some boss pedals on Solvalki. I think an SD-1 was used on some of the tracks, as well as a boss ps-2 and dd-3.

Big fan of The Smiths, Cure, and Lush back in the day, all Boss sounds! I think the purple flanger was my first, but the CE2 is the one that I can't go without. I remember an interview in one of those guitar magazines with Robert Smith, he said something to the affect that he liked that he could look down and know what pedal to press by the color.

The DS-1 was my first introduction into effects pedals because of Nirvana. I was a young kid when I first heard them and still to this day I love that distortion, i used to own a silver screw ds-1 when i was younger sold it because i moved a lot. Now I own a 40th anniversary black cased DS-1. Also have 2 different Katanas, i have the expression pedals, foot switches (gafc and fs5u), chorus, delay and loop station. They are a rock solid company with a build quality that is second to none.

In the 80s and 90s Boss were the pedals everyone wanted and everyone used. There was usually at least one Boss on every pro’s pedalboard. Somewhere along the line, a lot of guitarists decided they were just basic and looked down their noses at them. And then spent a fortune buying boutique pedals to recreate sounds that were often recorded originally with a Boss. They’re fantastic. Built like a tank, never sound less than pretty good and often sound amazing and nowadays, relatively inexpensive compared to the 90s. As for true bypass, Pete Cornish has said that if you’re running a long cable or using a lot of pedals, he recommends a buffered pedal in the chain.

Great video! I loved it. My first Boss was a Turbo Overdrive. It went through a lot, lost two knobs (a snare fell down on it back in the day, but they still work). I remember when I was 11 years old being in the music shop with my older brother one day and one guy was praising this pedal. So my brother asked if we could try it. They plugged me to this big Marshall and gave me this beautiful Jackson (blue maple flame top) and of course it blew me away. At home I was playing a shitty guitar plugged into my dad's old radio so you can imagine. This was 1991 in Poland so we did not have too many choices :) So then I was obsessed and saving all my pocket money for over a year. My dad used to give me a few coins every day so I could buy a sandwich or a candy at school but it all landed in my secret box. When I finally got the sum I went to that shop again and said "give me Turbo Distortion please". Still remember going back home on a train holding and looking at this thing. It said "Made In Japan". I was holding something from a different planet. That was a great day :) I still have it! For small amps "Turbo" setting is a bit too much, but it shines on big stacks. Other than that a great Overdrive. I do not use it as much now but I still plug it once in a while just for fun. I had multiple Boss pedals over the years, but this one is a special one. And I agree, overall Boss rulez!

What I like about Boss is the ergonomics. I like playing bare footed, pedals with little foot switches are uncomfortable on my feet, but Boss has that huge surface area that's quite comfortable. Also the knobs are below the plane of the switching surface so you don't have to worry about your foot changing the knob settings. They also don't take up much room on the pedal board. Plus, they are totally Boss!

niasboiii Rv & dd 500 are just as good as the strymon stuff imo. If you’re not looking at spending $350 per unit you can grab the dd20 & rv5-6 for cheap on the used market.

I think a lot of contemporary praise music that is heavy on Strymon pedals emulates the sound of post-rock bands who were using Boss pedals in the 90s and early 2000s, so this makes sense.

RV6 (that’s the only version I have personally owned) has some great sounds in it. The dynamic setting was a go to for me for a long time. If you get the setting in the right place the shimmer sounds amazing too! I will say I was less impressed with the more normal sounding reverbs in it (spring plate room hall)

My first Boss pedal was the Boss DA-2 Adaptive Distortion. I bought it when I was 13 or 14 because I wanted to play heavy metal and honestly because this pedal looked pretty. I've almost only ever seen bad comments about this pedal but for me it's the pedal that made my sound and I still use it today ! Thanks to this channel for teaching so much about pedals and to Josh for having a contagious love for guitar pedals !!!

My first BOSS pedal is a CE-2 Chorus. My Mom bought it for me in 1985 from Thoroughbred Music in Tampa, FL. We stopped there while we were on vacation (we were from Ohio) because I wanted to visit this famous music store I saw ads for in the back of Guitar Player magazine. Since we couldn't buy the purple Jackson Soloist on the wall she got me the CE-2. I still have it and it is the best sounding chorus pedal I have ever heard.

Ty Barnes Loved Thoroughbred Music. I really miss those days. It became a Sam Ash, then moved from that Hillsborough Ave location to Carollwood. And on topic, I bought a Boss analog delay pedal there in the late '80s. I don't have it anymore, but I wish I did.

It was such a cool store! I remember seeing a fully scalloped neck Schecter Yngwie Malmsteen model there as well. As I recall, my Mom dropped me off there for an hour or so and when she came back she offered to buy me something under $100. I believe the CE-2 was like $85

Cool video! Thanks for putting it out. I like when someone, especially from a major pedal brand, pays their respect to the good old Boss pedals. My first Boss pedal was an SD-1 from the 80's, maybe 1985 at most, Japanese of course. I got it in 1996. It had been extensively used in a sort of traveling band my father played bass in. When I got it it worked but the paint was almost all gone, and the little internal switch was bad. It was also missing the knobs. I used it a lot until the switch stopped working altogether. Had it repaired with a new switch, and got some new knobs from an FZ-5 - a pedal that I bought and really regret. At least it got me the exact same knobs I needed in the SD-1. A little interesting fact: I also have a Boss CE-3 (Japan). It can give that same sound from the VB-2 at 17:00, if you use it in stereo mode but on a regular mono rig, with the control on a lower modulation setting. It's actually one of my favorite sounds.

Favorite “secret” sound on the boss dd5/6 is the rapid fire sample you can achieve with the latching switch on the “hold” setting. You can create killer glitchy samples with it. That said my first boss pedal was the dd6 (still have) and use for that feature, particularly cool on bass.

Yeah I didnt like Boss, but they gave me no option! I wanted chunky heavy distortion, not crackling fizz, it didnt help they looked like they were from the 60's at a time when retro wasnt cool, modern new stuff was so I was more than thrilled when I got my Dod Grunge FX pedal in the 90s. Even all the old guys at the guitar shop were impressed with it, and probably would have never looked at it because it said "grunge" or was gimmicky for them but no doubt the best distortion box they've seen up to that point.

My first tuner was a Boss, I liked it and Boss pedals were quite the only brand I knew back in 1999. They are pretty simple and nothing to hate really. The fact is the sound is also important and sometimes you just want something else but I totally agree with you Boss is an amazing brand

There are some pedals out there that just sound a little different or do something different. For instance a DOD Gonkulator. For better or worse, that's the only distortion ring mod I know of. The TS808/TS9 has a slightly different sound than an ODX. Not a bad thing, but different. I like my DOD Rubberneck which has weird infinite echo stuff you can do and add pedals to the delay. Pretty cool imho.

Reeeeeally cool video! I had many many Boss pedals my dad brought to me from Japan back in the 80s. I used to hook them to my Casiotone keyboard. I was 11! But later on I sold them to pay for my music production school in LA. Time passed. Career took off. I made many records as a synth programmer, engineer and mixer. Got blessed with a couple of GRAMMY awards. Now I want to rebuild a full BOSS collection to use not only on synths but also to process ProTools and Ableton tracks. Yes. Not typical but pretty cool to go to a parallel route other than plugins. Looking forward to it. Love your video. God bless you!

First pedal of any kind: BOSS BF-2B (I think) bass flanger. I acquired it when I was in high school. I had an s-type Martin Stinger 6-string guitar running into the BOSS into a gray-carpeted Fender M-80 amp. Odd and wonderful combination. Lost them all 6 yrs later in a fire that burned down the entire block. Sometimes, alone, in the wee hours, I can still hear her groovy clank across the years. And I get a little weepy. I was a fan of Boss pedals way before I played, let alone bought one. They're so neat, compact, colourful. I'm a big fan of Mike Stern and his board is like 100% Boss. And so when I started gigging again last year, I had a few quid and so did the classic middle-aged thing and went out and finally bought myself what I'd been wanting for 30 odd years. A Pedal board with a load of Boss pedals (5) - GE7, CE5, SD1, PS6 and CS3. Have since built out the board to now include another 2 - TU3 and MO2. Apart from the look, build and sound of Boss - the other great thing is that they say what they do. Chorus, Fuzz, Overdrive, Harmonist, etc. Much as I love the cute JHS names, as an old git I appreciate a simple descriptor.
