Very informative demo. I have been watching a few vids demoing the RE-2 but yours is just right up there with indepth information. It does sound beautiful especially the modulated repeats is so dreamy. The lack of stereo is a bummer though, looking at the DD8 instead. BTW keep up the rambling, your knowledge is very interesting. 👍

Thanks ! The DD8 is a fantastic option. It is very simple though and lacks many control for shaping the delay like tone or modulation control. But it does sound very good.

@@YukiTheSynthDragon There is a very good deal on the Eventide Space on Ebay UK, very tempted to buy one. Have you ever used one?, what are your thoughts, pros and cons.

@@abrokenframe82 Space is mainly a reverb but it is one of my favorites. I have had one for many years and don't plan on selling it.

I honestly think you will love the El capistan. Great video, great demo.

I love the video. It is exactly what I was looking for! I have been trying to find the "perfect" or best sounding tape delay pedal for my Moog set-up (Mother-32,DFAM, Subharmonicon). I know they are monophonic semi-modular synths, so there is no stereo, unless I was to make a stereo image on my own in DAW. I have two quick questions for you; do you have a tape delay recommendation for me based on my setup? My other question is do you think the Boss RE-2 is a better tape delay than the tape delay setting on the UA Starlight? Thanks for any help you can provide! It's be a long search!
@YukiTheSynthDragon
@YukiTheSynthDragon 2 года назад
The starlight has better modulation while the re2 had multihead capability. I think they both sound great. Though I did just pickup a volante again a week after making this video. I pretty much decided it is the best tape delay on the market. I will do a video about it in a few weeks but that is my pick for any tape delay type stuff.

@@YukiTheSynthDragon Thanks for the response! So you definitely think the Strymon Volante is the best tape delay, and definitely better than both the Universal Audio Starlight and the Boss RE-2? The Volante is one of the only units I haven't actually tried yet; I truly appreciate that insight! In regards to reverb wasn't there a GFI Systems pedal that seemed to top your list, or am I mistaken..? I actually just went through some videos of yours I watched and I cannot find what I was referring to. I am just super picky on my tape delay and generally all reverb pedals. For instance I think the Earthquaker Devices Afterneath is too dark and hard to tame.
@YukiTheSynthDragon

@@alexandermontagnet3361 Volante for sure beats out everything else I have tried tape delay. I realize like the gfi specular tempus, but not as much as other reverbs. My favorite 3 reverbs are the ventris, nightsky, and big sky. The space and by extension the black hole pedal are a runner up.

@@YukiTheSynthDragon thanks for the quick reply! I ordered the Volante this morning! Regarding your reverb choices, does that at all get affected by my personal setup (Mother-32, DFAM, Subharmonicon)? I didn’t know if the monophonic setup would effect your choices. Thank you so much for your help! It has been such a relief!

@@alexandermontagnet3361 Nope, those reverbs all work great with mono or poly synths.

DD-500 doesn't have RE-201 emulation? edit: and you answered my question in the last minute of the video and this was indeed interesting ;)

Thanks for the review! The lack of stereo in these new Roland tape delay pedals is a bit disappointing. I’m considering a Volante myself, mainly because its interface which is genius (I also have a DD500 and DD200 btw but especially the 500 is much less hands on). I like the wow/flutter thing but indeed not the splices/crinkle stuff. How bad is this irl on the Volante (can’t find many good examples) and can you still dial in nice wow/flutter without the splices/crinkle stuff? I don’t think there are other pedals with stereo tape delay + midi clock in + head selection? Thanks!
@YukiTheSynthDragon
@YukiTheSynthDragon 2 года назад
It's not that bad irl, I overlooked some things on the volante. I ended up with a new volante again and would suggest that as the best tape / drum delay on the market.

@@YukiTheSynthDragon Yeah, I figured the Volante still is the best tape delay atm. You re-buying it (if I got that right - you have to do a video about that story) means a lot. El Cap is nice too, but it’s not true stereo, has limited head selection and no midi tempo sync. Would be cool if Strymon would make a version with a similar layout and options as the Volante… I decided to keep both my H9’s (Max & maxed core), my Specular Tempus (I have those three rack mounted on a 3U plate, just drill chassis matching holes in the plate and use slightly longer screws in their chassis). DD200 and add the Volante. Have all those on two mixer FX loops which would give me plenty of options. Going to sell my DD500, RV500, Ocean Machine and Poly Beebo. Otherwise they would gather dust and it’s better to have other people enjoy them. My Zoom 70CDR will stay though, although hardly used anymore it’s a keeper with sentimental value. :) Thanks for your reply. I value your opinion, reviews and setup ideas. I like your review video’s, but I would also enjoy video’s about why you part with a certain pedal. Anyway, just keep enjoying creating those videos. Cheers from the Netherlands.

@@skullhqx Yes I did rebuy it. I will do a video soon most likely. Also the el cap is getting a new version soon if the leaks are correct. It might have true stereo but that is just speculation given it shares the Zelzah platform.

@@YukiTheSynthDragon You (or the rumor) was true. Strymon released six ‘version 2’ pedals yesterday. It will be interesting to see what the prices will be. The new El Cap now has (trs) midi in and some extra controls. It won’t be a Volante (so no buyer’s remorse here) but it is a nice option. I prefer the head-options of the Volante :)

I appreciate the honest opinion. Do you think the RE-2 would be an upgrade from El Capistan? edit: oh, no SOS looping? that's a big nope.
@YukiTheSynthDragon
@YukiTheSynthDragon 2 года назад
No it is not at all
@GdabZ
@GdabZ 2 года назад
I feel like it could be an upgrade tho. Apart from the low damp and high damp that are separate knobs on the El Capistan, the RE-2 brings a separate jack input for stereo (as opposed to a jumper you have to change anytime you want to use your pedal on a guitar or a synth with the ElCap), a more progressive mix knob (the ElCap is very light from 0 to 75% then fully wet with a distinguishable cut), and a smaller footprint, all of which can be important.
@robertsyrett1992
@robertsyrett1992 2 года назад
@@GdabZ Fair enough, except that sound on sound is pretty much my favorite thing about ElCap. I think the knob characteristics are not accidental either, presumably the DSP wizards at strymon were looking for that 0-75% full wet behavior.

@@robertsyrett1992 To each his own. I sold mine and might test this RE-2 which looks a bit more practical, some tradeoffs aside.
