In this lesson I am going to show you a one bar Bossa Nova pattern and some jazz chords so that you use this groove to play through the song Blue Bossa.
Bossa Nova is, like Rock and Blues, a music that was invented on guitar. It has also become an essential part of Jazz and Pop repertoire in terms of must know grooves.
I have been getting requests for a Bossa Nova tutorial for the last 2 years. I decided to make it a small series because I think each groove deserves a lesson in itself. When you work on this it is better if you take them one at a time. That way you get really familiar with the feel and how to phrase them.

Thanks again Jens! These videos make Bossa Nova accessible and do-able to so many of us. I just downloaded Drum Genius app; can you tell me which Bossa Nova grooves may be most useful for these lessons? I’m asking bc I get to pick 5 tracks for free.

Around 7:30 - I am a bit confused because I can clearly see your index finger picking the 5th string separately - after which high strings pull-off comes in, but the tabs are not showing this. The tab is showing the 6th string picked in separation. Where does the 5th string pick-up come from?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Год назад
I can see what you mean, but it is just a ghost note which is not really audible (and it is on the 4ths string)

The great thing about these BoSSa chords-rhythms, and patterns is that you can take them and do all kinds of things with them.

I’m learning Blue Bossa in my Jazz Mandolin class but don’t play guitar. Still your videos about Blue Bossa, all your videos really, help me with my understanding of theory and getting into the groove. I have to methodically translate notes and from guitar to mando, but mostly I just listen to what you play and work towards your sound. Your approach to jazz works for me regardless of the instrument. 🙏 You are 😎 . . . And 🔥!

Hey Jens, I trust players over publishers, but why is that everyone seems to play the F minor 7 for 2 measures, but in my real book on the first line, F minor 7 gets 1 measure followed by 1 measure of B flat 7 then into D minor 7 flat 5, etc.?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
That's actually what they play on the original recording, but it was not in the old realbook like that (and I don't like how it sounds personally) so that's why I don't do that 🙂

Hi, i understand that te last chord voicings are a ii V I, but what about the first chord voicings de Cm7/Fm7/Dm7b5/G7 from wich scale are those came from ?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 7 лет назад
Hi Mark it's in Cm so they are I IV II and V in Cm. You'd need more than one scale to navigate them though. Did you check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SGDUbZUi5mA.html

I really like this lesson and look forward to seeing the others in the series! I think The Girl From Ipanema is another good tune to work on these kinds of comping rhythms. I could see how the bridge could get difficult to fit into a lesson but I think it'd be pretty cool to see a lesson on it!
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 8 лет назад
Thanks Pierce! I get that "The Bitch in F" is an obvious choice for a bossa nova lesson, but it really doesn't matter that much which tune you take, it is about the groove right? There are recordings of Girl From with the groove from this lesson if I remember correctly though the phrasing of the melody often suggests another groove, especially in the original language.
