This sounds like the opening track from the LP "Organist in Sanity and Madness" - I think the LP was a fund raising concert for the Royal College of Organists? If I recall correctly, Gillian Weir (Now Dame Gillian Weir) also appeared in it as well as Francis Jackson (York Minster).
That's right - I was also there at the Albert Hall - at the time a Westminster Abbey Chorister - a number of us, maybe all of us, were taken along to see the sub-organist and a number of other luminary organists go through their paces. As I recall Simon Preston and, shall we say a slightly older than him, Francis Jackson went through a pantomime of pretending to toss a coin by the organ to decide who should play this fiendish piece, making a show of losing it with it dropping over the ledge into the chorus seating, and then finding it and deciding S.P. had won the toss ( FJ played something else). I'm so glad to find this - S.P. used to play it occasionally at the Abbey, but I thought I would never hear it again, not knowing about this recording until now; I'm still in awe at how easy he makes the pedal-work sound! I too was there at "The Organ in Sanity and Madness" and have the LP that was issued some time afterwards. Another highlight was the boxing match between suitably attired Allan Wickes (organ) and James Blades (percussion)!
