Bossi 'Etude Symphonique' from St John the Divine 😎
Well, it's a lot cheaper than a yearly gym membership! I've often wondered if playing with increased velocity on the pedals registers as 'steps' on my trusty fitbit. Last Thursday, I started my recording session at the cathedral with about 8,000 steps already logged - New York City is still a 'walking city', even if there aren't as many people at the moment! Right at the end of the second take (the one you hear here), my fitbit juddered with the encouraging 10,000 steps vibration, with the mildy-encouraging rocket picture zooming up the little screen, through the electronic galaxies. I wonder which burns the most calories, playing the organ or a brisk walk? Food for thought...
Marco Enrico Bossi was the Organist at Como Cathedral in Italy and later taught at Naples, Bologna, Venice and Rome Conservatories. He travelled widely as a recitalist and died unexpectedly on an ocean liner, returning from a tour to Philadelphia and New York. As a composer he was extremely prolific and his Etude Symphonique (opus 78) is one of his most famous showpieces. It makes a fabulously arresting start to a concert, for those who are energetic enough!

I can just hear my organ teacher (in fact I think he might have been yours many moons ago, the late, great Mr Popplewell) commenting to me once when I told him I was starting a recital with a fiddly piece - "well you're a silly bugger"! I do play this piece, but I usually finish with it as a) you need nerves of steel to start a recital with it, and b) my legs are too tired afterwards to follow it with much!! Great playing, and regards from the UK!

Wow, that may be the first instance I've heard of zimbelstern being used effectively!

I love David Briggs as an Organist. I have a few cd's of him when at King's College. Beautiful performance. Can you please tell me the make of the console and why is it so small for a grand cathedral? I recall seeing somewhere a picture of a bigger console. Greetings from Canada.

Stunning performance. I have a CD of your opening recital on the (then) new Gloucester instrument from several years ago. You opened that night with this very piece-that was some opening!
