Bossi 'Etude Symphonique' from St John the Divine 😎
Well, it's a lot cheaper than a yearly gym membership! I've often wondered if playing with increased velocity on the pedals registers as 'steps' on my trusty fitbit. Last Thursday, I started my recording session at the cathedral with about 8,000 steps already logged - New York City is still a 'walking city', even if there aren't as many people at the moment! Right at the end of the second take (the one you hear here), my fitbit juddered with the encouraging 10,000 steps vibration, with the mildy-encouraging rocket picture zooming up the little screen, through the electronic galaxies. I wonder which burns the most calories, playing the organ or a brisk walk? Food for thought...
Marco Enrico Bossi was the Organist at Como Cathedral in Italy and later taught at Naples, Bologna, Venice and Rome Conservatories. He travelled widely as a recitalist and died unexpectedly on an ocean liner, returning from a tour to Philadelphia and New York. As a composer he was extremely prolific and his Etude Symphonique (opus 78) is one of his most famous showpieces. It makes a fabulously arresting start to a concert, for those who are energetic enough!
