Long lost video of one of classic rock's greatest lead vocalists. In June of 1991, Brad Delp and Barry Goudreau of Boston were touring with their band RTZ, supporting their album "Return to Zero". When we booked them for the show, this time from downtown San Jose, it was assumed that only Brad was going to appear. We were thrilled the entire band appeared, but this is the story of why it turned out to be so funny.
Since we thought only Brad would be there, the Blazers and I rehearsed the Boston classic "Long Time" in hopes Brad would sing it. Keep in mind, we NEVER knew if the special musical guests would say yes to performing, but at least we'd be prepared. The only part I was needed for were the two acoustic guitar parts. The plan was for me to stand over to the side, play the parts, then go back to the broadcast table, as the Blazers finished the song with Brad. Like, who's lookin' at me when you got him there? But now to see the video after more than 30 years, when all of RTZ decided to play, I was in no way going to pretend I belonged in the band. Even Bob walks up (1:58) to jokingly applaud my "big" part. I did the second one and got the hell out of there.
Peg Bertsch of the Blazers did a great job on keyboards, but the video camera was set up in a way that she isn't seen. And speaking of the video, like the others on this channel, they are compliments of Greg Mullins, who has NO idea who was behind the camera that day, nor why they decided to do so many pans of the audience. But it's great to see after all of this time and a great way to remember the talented vocals of Brad Delp. As you can see, he's having a great time along with Barry on this song. We would always do the interview segment first, so they'd get to know us, realize that we were just in it for the fun and the music. I believe that helped Brad and Barry get up to rock out, without taking it too seriously.
Thanks again to Greg Mullins for producing this video with my remastered broadcast sound. And to Peg Bertsch for always playing so well on these live radio treasures. Thanks to our pro sound man Pete Roberts. Special thanks to Ron Nenni and Dave Wohlman, without whom, these KOME shows wouldn't have been possible.
This show was around the time I decided to record the shows on Saturday nights for later broadcast. It allowed more musical guests to be able to appear, the sound quality would be at its best (DAT tape), and recording in the early evening allowed an audience that normally couldn't attend because of work to be a part of our "live" shows. Thanks to all who attended and made these shows so exciting.
This channel is dedicated to my sons, family, and friends who persuaded me to share these classic rock archives.
