Speaking as someone who has been to two British boarding schools- I am shocked out how similar the Boston Gentry are to my own grand parents. Literally shocked. I hope you don't take offence, but Americans do really have genuine social class, with the customs, attitudes and opportunities. I think because the Boston Gentry where/are less institutionalised, they have survived politically and social change- by not taking part in it (while staying below the radar and maybe quietly fading away). Whereas the French aristocracy were to obvious a target, and there strength made them ridged- and then just brittle.
MelvinThe42 Still though, its weird having someone from outside of the UK be so similar the culture of Upper Class Boston was to Upper middle class Britain.
Well, Bostonians were originally from upper middle-class Britain (as only they were able to afford the journey), and Boston remained quite civilized at least until the masses of unwashed Irish arrived.
