Put it this way: a laptop is meant to be carried around. That means all the parts will have a size/weight constraint to consider (aka they have to balance out the aspects they compromise). PC parts don't have that limiting factor.
@AragorN88
@AragorN88 2 года назад
Not to mention a GPU on a laptop will not have the same performance as on a desktop because of the cooling limitation of the laptop. You are buying an inferior version with the only advantage being that you can easily carry it around.
@LaughingOrange
@LaughingOrange 2 года назад
@@AragorN88 Also no battery that fits a laptop form factor will ever be able to supply 500W, which is on the low side for a desktop PC. More power often means more frames, so a 350W GPU will always be better than a 150W GPU with the same architecture and manufacturing node.
@DarkonFullPower
@DarkonFullPower 2 года назад
@@AragorN88 Origin disagreed. Their "Laptop frame, Desktop parts" was (when I bought it) as powerful as you could make any consumer PC on market. Hot and heavy, but it outclassed anyone I went up against. (Again, at the time)
@prawtism

Don't they have to fit into standardized cases? They have all the same considerations, just in a 10x space
@TF_NowWithExtraCharacters
@TF_NowWithExtraCharacters 2 года назад
@@prawtism We're comparing laptop parts vs PC parts here, they have different standard sizes for each. So say you want to have a part that can hit X levels of performance, but in a laptop part it has to be smaller/lighter/better heat management than a similar PC part. Even if that can somehow be achieved, it has to cost a fair bit more than the PC part, just cos of all the extra tech and engineering that goes into it. In other words, for the same amount of money, the PC parts you can buy will almost always outperform laptop parts (assuming we're not talking about shortages, of course).
@TheCrazybunny56

If only the gpu prices weren't so artificially high, I probably would've had a gaming pc by now... Add to that the chip shortage and yeah... Thankfully I'll be able to get a steam deck to finally pc game! But yes, Botan's a true gamer hehe! ^_^
@O___P
@O___P 2 года назад
I haven't looked recently, but during the earlier days of the shortage, you could buy prebuilts for as much as the graphics card, so just take that out and sell the other parts.
@razorfever
@razorfever 2 года назад
If I remember right, last I checked the build to order sites, the GPU's aren't insanely overpriced there. Resellers and stores are where the overpriced versions were, but they weren't bad on the websites. But with that said, it was a 2-3 month wait for a build instead of 1-3 weeks.

As someone that has been exclusively using laptops for the past 10+ years, I agree with her recommendation. While laptops can still be great gaming machines, it is significantly more expensive than a desktop of similar quality. Unless you have a specific reason to get a laptop (e.g. I travel a lot for work and need something portable), I highly recommend desktops.

I agree. Even though my job does not require a laptop, I got a work laptop for things like typing on the go(I learned the hard way that even though you could do most work on an iPad, some things are better done on a laptop/PC environment when you're overseas). My main gaming workhorse is my desktop and my consoles, but having a laptop to do some things outside, like typing up something as a hobby, is honestly better than the annoyance of doing it on an iPad/tablet using its software keyboard.

Gaming laptops are WAY different than they used to be back in the day. I can totally agree with the lion about choice of CPU and GPU when choosing a new laptop since it's pretty much a fix thing (it's gonna be that specific gpu and that specific cpu you'll get with the device). Speaking of experience, i use a HP Omen 15 with a Ryzen 7 4800h and nvidia RTX 2060 (costed me $1180 bucks last year) And i can play many current gen games at ultra settings without problems at 60 FPS. >YOUR MACHINE MUST SOUND LIKE A DARN HAIRDRYER Nope. Honestly though these days, gaming laptops have gotten really good on their own. Build a PC because even though the initial buying price might be steep, the PC is modular. You can always change the parts later and not have to buy a whole new laptop just so that you can get a spec upgrade.

Normally Botan would be correct, but due to the inflated price of GPUs it's actually much more reasonable to just buy a laptop or pre-built PC than to try and find a single decent GPU for your custom build right now. If you can find a pre-built on sale with a decent GPU, that's what i'd go for. At the end of the day it's still upgradeable down the line.

I was honestly so excited to build my own pc but thanks to the crappy scalpers my dream was ruined and I had to get a gaming laptop. Though it's honestly been a pretty good experience. Took out its battery and undervolted it so it's temps are pretty solid around 70c maxing out to 80c when playing high end games.

Yes Botan but there is a thing called a chip shortage right now, not all of us have special channels we can get parts from. What you are saying would have been true were it 3 years ago. Laptops right now are one of the only ways to get a modern gaming setup without giving money to some waste of space miner/scalper.

Pretty much my take on it as well, that's definitely the voice of experience. I don't need the portability of a laptop (and in cases where I do, I have my smartphone and a work laptop to cover it). So it always seemed like one of those "pay more for less" deals. Funny she mentions build-to-order. I learned how to build my own in my early teens, but these days I definitely do buy from independent vendors because it's less hassle and, frankly, I run out of patience and my airflow sucks lol.

She is speaking facts I also wanted to play Elden Ring but my gaming laptop just barely couldn't make the cut to run Elden ring because I use a gtx1050 ti and Elden ring needs at minimum a gtx1060 I then tried searching the price for a gtx 2060 so I could stay ahead and I got shocked by the numbers ,then I searched again for the bare minimum gtx1060 and I'm still floored. Now I decided to get a ps5 instead which is a better investment for gaming (if I even manage to get my hands on 1) In conclusion avoid laptops and get a PC or console if gaming is your aim

One of the key limitations of a laptop are the power and thermal constraints to ensure they're portable and doesn't set your house on fire. Using an extreme example, an RTX 4090 Laptop chip is around the same performance tier as the RTX 4070Ti/RTX 3090 Desktop. Meanwhile the actual 4090 is in a class of its own.

Friends who I've talked to who have only done the gaming laptop scenario only do it out of necessity and it's not exactly a lasting piece of hardware. If you have the space for it, get a desktop. It might end up being a bit more at first to get the mouse/KB/monitors but in the long run it'll be cheaper. The monitor, mouse/kb, and even the case typically carries over into my next build so it's just an increasingly cheaper affair. Also something you need to keep in mind when comparing the two is air flow. Keep in mind that "gaming laptops" are a bunch of high end components that get hot and are all crammed/sandwiched into a very small space so airflow is pretty much non-existent. The compromise you have to make is ramming air through the bottom with the stands that they make for em, which isn't a great solution and they still burn out quickly comparatively. Now keep in mind, when we say you shouldn't get a laptop, that comes with a big asterisk. Obviously some living situations don't really allow for a desktop so go for what suits your needs in that case. But if you can avoid it, you def should.

Its absolutley right what she said, but i think it depens on the user... At least for me, i bought a Gaming laptop not just for gaming, but also for my school, my works needs a GPU... So a laptop is very practical on that manner
@serene-illusion

yeah I agree that getting a gaming laptop, especially if we're considering long term, isn't that great of a choice but I have a different reasoning. Gaming laptops can get real loud, have thermal constraints, gets real hot to the touch (especially over time), and especially drain more juice than just getting a normal laptop. Not to mention the cheaper or mid range options almost always have low build quality, crappy screens, subpar speakers, and batteries that drain real quick. I'm a college student who needs a laptop to carry around almost every day, so I use a mid-range Dell laptop that's got good build quality, decent speakers, good CPU and memory for the work I do, and quiet fans. The integrated AMD graphics are just enough to run my games, even DS3 at lowest settings, to keep me entertained. I have games that I've been craving to play like Nier, FF7R and Elden Ring, so I'm saving up for a PS5. I don't need a PC/gaming laptop because I'm already comfortable and happy with this decent laptop that I use for work, and if it's for gaming honestly it's way more cost-efficient getting a console than selling my laptop for a gaming laptop with specs that match the PS5 and not to mention matches the build quality of my current laptop.

I have a top spec 2019 Predator Triton 500, and she's right. Thing feels like I'm frying eggs on it if I play games these days. The problem might be with the almost 4 year old hardware, or me not cleaning the fans every week. But it still boots up faster than all of my friends' PCs.

Makes perfect sense, if you ever want to stream down the line, do some kind of rendering or other specific kind of work, then PC will be better. The only use for laptop would be if let's say your work demands that you meet up with your employer and client in your office or somewhere else, other than that, I don't see gaming in Airport or a Cafe as enjoyable in any way shape or form.
