I was encouraged to go visit the Gothenburg Botanical Gardens in Sweden while en route to my trip to Asia on account that my friend, Andrew, said it was one of the most beautiful botanic gardens he's ever been too. Well, that is quite the recommendation!
It was raining on-and-off while we were there in autumn, but we did get a chance to see some of the fall landscape, tour the subtropical and tropical houses, the orchid house, the private Dionysia collection, and even the propagation and succulent house. This will be the first video of a three-part series and this first part is very meditative-so sit back, relax, and enjoy!
Please keep in mind that this film was done pre-coronavirus, so wearing masks and staying a 'safe' distance was not required, but thank you to all who express concern.

really love how this garden is curated. Even in the carnivorous section, it was designed specifically for kids. What's more inspirational is, they worked out strategies that allow kids to get 'touchy' with the plants instead of just imposing restrictions, and at the same time keep the species safe in another area. True spirit of education right there.
@summerrayneoakes
@summerrayneoakes 3 года назад
Rightfully so. It was so well done-throughout the entire garden. The education wasn't so "in your face"....instead it was right before you in your hands.

I used to be the head gardener of GB Botanical, its a fantastic place and Åsa is lovely, Great that you have been there. I left it to be closer to my family and cut a 2 hour one way daily commute out of my life, but my years there will always be special to me. and frankly I'm slowly turning my garden and house into my personal botanic paradise instead

Anders Stålhand I used to work in a botanic garden, and it is a labour of love. It’s good for a while, but when life becomes different (more important) for whatever reason, then it’s a fork in the road time.

I really appreciate Summer's formal education/background in plants. While Ms. Kruger is a fantastic tour guide and extremely knowledgeable, I always appreciate having a bridge between difficult terminology and an easier away to digest information which Summer provides. Great tour and I don't know how anyone could even THINK about disliking the video. Thanks so much.

Another awesome video. I always enjoy these Botanical Garden trips. The conservation story of the Easter Island tree was really interesting. I do hope they will one day survive on the Island again. I enjoyed seeing all the plants. I found the Lithops to be the most interesting because I have one. I like that you get us the 'backroom' access to where the studies and experiments and trials are taking place with plants many of us have never seen before :) Thanks for sharing this video.

I can totally relate to the separate areas of the garden, although I feel you can create the same departments within a garden given any space you have. My garden allows me the freedom to move from room to room and capture something new on a regular basis. People say my downfall with the garden according to them, the containers are not self sustained. In Miami, it rains on a regular basis and watering is not a chore for me. I look forward to the release of stresses from the day while feeding my garden essential waters. The interaction is essential to sensory. It grabs you euphorically on a spiritually level and will not let go! Who have to physically force the release! At the time of creating my garden, I had no idea how the garden who end. I went with the flow, by letting the garden take me wherever it wanted. It's fantastic and suited just for me! Happy growing and thanks for sharing.

Hi Summer, I love your videos and I love you! Great combination of beauty and brains with a side of spunk. Without a doubt, you are the #1 plant guru of RU-vid! Thank you for educating the world on plant care. There are very few people on RU-vid that know what they are actually talking about and it causes a great deal of misinformation. I love nature so much and I would love to see some conservation facts, footage and ideas of what we can do every day to help our planet survive. Also, I think you are the perfect person to deliver truth and knowledge of what is going on with deforestation, climate change, plastic, water conservation, etc. You are doing a great deal of good for our planet. Thank you again! :)

I had Amorphophallus for a good number of years, which had originally been gifted to me. After I moved to a new home where summers tend to be cooler the bulbs eventually got smaller and smaller until they were unable to take the long winters in storage and dried up to nothing. Brings back fond memories of my journey from an Apprentice Horticulturist to my 4th and final year in Glasgow Botanic Gardens. I was proud of my time there and had a promising career there training other Apprentices as well as interacting with the members of the public, school children as well as University students. I completed my studies, exams and practical side of Horticulture and held a position in the Front Range which were a broad variety of Greenhouse plants, Palm House, Cactii & Succulents, Consevatory, aquatic plants etc, oh and the Conservatory for which display then would change weekly or every couple of weeks depending on the time of year. There were also a large number of greenhouses, potting sheds not open to the public where plants were propagated and grown on for displays in flower garden beds, the Front Range, Kibble Palace etc. I loved my job and the people I worked with back in 1975 when my Apprenticeship was completed. I had a long promising career ahead of me, one or two Horticulturist got job offers in Edinburgh Botanic gardens... life was good. Not long after I was faced with a difficult decision, my Fiance's father died and her mum wanted to be with her other 2 daughters and son in Canada. My Fiance didn't want to emigrate without me and her mum didn't want to leave her daughter in Scotland when she was going to be 3000 miles away. In 1976 I boarded a plane for my first ever flight to a country that I knew little about. I was going to a country where I only knew 2 people, my Fiance and her mother. Did I do the right thing? Give up a job that meant a lot to me and move to a country that I knew very little about. A new life awaited me as I hurtled towards Canada onboard a DC8 alone as my Fiancè had gone on ahead 3 months before me. Sorry I got carried away.... lol
