I haven't played the game so I can't comment on it specifically, but I take issue with how you frame the way narratives are crafted during the first portion of the video. I'm not going to disagree that there are some stories that place their focus on certain elements more than others, some stories are character driven, plot driven, etc. That said, I can't help but think that you're being overly generalizing, not to mention overly simplifying what it means to write a story, when you frame it in this specific way, but on top of that, I don't like how you argue that focusing on theme somehow makes for the best stories and that other stories with different focuses are inherently easier to digest. There are plenty of stories that are very plot focused that are very difficult to get into, not everything that has that focus is the same as a Marvel movie. I also can't help but feel that you're making a lot of unsubstantiated assumptions about creators and the creative process when you make these claims, in that it's very possible that even something like The Beginner's Guide (a game I love btw) that Davey Wreden wrote it with a more character/plot focus than with a focus on theme. You're assuming that's the case given the content of the game, but it's entirely possible that Davey didn't think of it that way as he was making the game. You were critical of Buddy Simulator for making it seem like its early game comes across as an accident, however if you found out that everything you thought was intentional in The Beginner's Guide was actually an accident, would that change your perception of the work? I don't think it should, the game is still the same as it ever was. Hopefully this gave you some food for thought. I know this comment was very critical of what you said in the video, but I want to make it clear that I actually quite enjoy your videos and I think you have a lot of interesting things to say. I don't want you to take this the wrong way, it's not my intention to slag you in order to make you feel bad, but as you yourself stated in this very video, I'm critical because I do enjoy what you do and I want to see you do better.
It always felt like you where a kind of negative man when watching these essays, but after hearing that last minite or so, i went back intro all the videos whit a new mindset, and i now see, i guess it was in plain sight but, the bad things stick out more, but i wonder, WHY do the bad things always stick out more thn the good things in general? Maby im wrong about all this but, its how i think of it
