As we set out for home, we're reminded that it's not just about the destination - it's about the incredible journey we're on. Our departure from the pans was early, and we opted for the scenic route along the pans, leading us to the captivating Lekhubu Island, also known as Kubu Island. And let me tell you, it was a feast for the eyes. The landscape transformed continuously, shifting from grassy plains to lush bushveld. Open expanses greeted us and eventually transformed into serene mopani forests. Along the way, we encountered small settlements adorned with cattle, where the harmony between people and land was a sight to behold. The resourcefulness of using tree trunks to build cattle kraals and houses truly complemented the surroundings.
Our journey was punctuated by stops to capture the essence of various Baobab trees in photos. And then, we reached Kubu Island - a moment that etched amazement on the faces of our fellow travellers. The island, shaped by granite millions of years ago, was home to some of the oldest Baobab trees in existence. After preparing a quick snack, we soaked in the breathtaking scenery. It's a place that's sure to be a mandatory stopover for an evening on our next visit. The allure of capturing starlit skies against the backdrop of Baobab trees draws people from far and wide.
Continuing our expedition, we followed the meandering "Pan-Hiway" in a southern direction toward Letlhakane. En route, we couldn't resist a stop at the Bird Viewing point just outside the pans. In the wet season, up to 35,000 Pink Flamingos gather here, creating a surreal spectacle. And yes, we proudly left our AFFiPADAF sticker on the board as a testament to our journey.
As we left the “Pan-Hiway”, a dusty road stretched out before us, promising a new challenge. Clouds of ash-grey dust erupted from beneath the turning wheels of our vehicles, creating a mesmerizing ballet of black and grey. The sheer volume of dust was an unprecedented experience for us, conjuring up images of a place where baby powder might be gathered or manufactured, if one were to indulge their imagination. The trail ahead was undoubtedly dusty, but it added a unique touch to our journey that we won't soon forget
Arriving at Kwa Nokeng, we set up camp for our final night in Botswana. This convenient stop is located less than 2 km before the border crossing. While upgrades were underway, the camping site was comfortable, and the ablutions were spacious, clean, and equipped with warm water. Despite our love for cooking, we treated ourselves to a dinner at the on-site restaurant. The experience was nothing short of fantastic. Dining on the deck next to the river under a massive tree was incredibly serene. The reasonably priced menu surprised us with generous portions of delicious food. As the day wound down, we retired early - tomorrow, we embark on the last leg of this incredible journey homeward.
