Bottlecaps - Silvan MTB Trails

Bottlecaps is probably one of the gnarliest trails at Silvan MTB Park. It has it all, starting from the steep entry off Inverness Road through to some hair raising rolls and drops. Not to mention there are plenty of sketchy corners and slippery roots, especially when it's a little damp. Then there's the gap jumps (some sections held together with cable ties) and rough as guts rock garden. This is raw mountain biking at its best.
Having previously only ridden this trail once before I wanted to take my time going down on this day and session some of the bigger features.
On my first run down I ran into the same #trailfairies as the first time I went down Bottlecaps. Check out the Slips and Sticks video ( • Silvan MTB Trails - Sl... ). Shout out to them not only for the great work but for also offering to video me through the rock garden section. You'll see them pushing their bikes up at about the halfway mark.
I then returned to the top. I recommend heading from the midway carpark up Inverness Road, it's still a pinchy climb but it's smooth without all the rocks and ruts. I guess you could self shuttle from the Mt Evelyn oval up Inverness Road, a much easier option.
At the top I met another rider, Chris, and had a chat about riding some of the trails at Silvan and suggested he take it easy for his first run down Bottlecaps. Hope you got down okay Chris and had fun.
In the end my second run was a full POV of Bottlecaps and I stripped all the sessioned jumps over the top of the POV. I also had a go at a bit of a vlog style intro, let me know in the comments what you think. Hope you like it.

Totally one of the favourites and at top just after the big log roll is that you can choose to either go left, straight or right towards true grit which is cool. I usually go to the left and I believe that may be the actual bottlecaps trail I'm not sure. You always have great quality vids.

Thanks for your support and glad you like the vids. When I shot this video I wasn't aware that the trail leads to the left, too focussed on that log roll 😜 I did go back another day and checked out the left section, some nice drop steps through there. I'm still to ride True Grit although I have come up it, just not down.

@@Sportilium I think either way is still gnarly none the less. I do also go down true grit to the right of the roll which goes to no strava extension.

Thanks Dan. Really enjoyed filming this one but takes so long stopping for each feature. Hoping to do more like this and love filming with the rest of the guys.

Do u think this is the hardest trail on the mountain?
@Sportilium
@Sportilium 3 года назад
This and Lyer Lyer. The entry down the embankment at the top of Inverness Rd is steep and can be a little daunting. Same with the log roll at 2:42. I didn't realise at the time that if you veer left there's some nice step downs. Turning right straight after the log roll will take you down True Grit. The hardest thing about this trail is when it's damp there's a lot of the soil, roots and logs that become quite slippery.

Love the videos pal, keeping it real. I wish someone would drop a pin where the entrance is... anyone ?

Used to be on Trailforks but was removed. Starts at the very top of Inverness Road.

I’ve been trying to find a map of this, but theres no official one or any really. But this will give me an idea of where it starts which is the inverness - true grit link. My friends are going there this weekend, im just deciding if i should go or not

Hi Sony. Bottlecaps was recently removed from Trailforks (not sure why). You're right though, head to the top of Inverness and you will see the trails from there. It starts pretty steep but stick to the left to get to Bottlecaps. Go right if you want to ride True Grit. Be careful this time of year though, it gets slippery when wet.

Sportilium true, yeh i noticed it branches out and goes towards no strava on the right. I dont think im going anymore because it looks like it would be sketchy when its wet. Dont want to crash like i did at Narby.

Nice video. Love Silvan but it scares me a bit! After coming unstuck on To The Valley Below a month or so ago, I returned to Lysterfield a week later and am embarrassed to say that I stacked big time on the Comm Games decent! Screwed up my SRAM GX derailleur but replaced it with the XO. Can't wait to get the rig out ASAP but your vids will have to do in the meantime.

Paul Miller thanks for the compliment. There’s plenty to be scared of at Silvan (even Lysty) especially if you’re looking to upskill. Best to focus on one thing at a time. Baby steps and work your way up. Hope you didn’t hurt yourself. Where on comm games did you crash?

@@Sportilium managed to come off just before the switchbacks. I actually got out at Lysterfield today for the first time since my upgraded derailleur and it felt good. Steered clear of comm games and stayed with Aneurysm and Follow Me. A bit tentative but enjoyed it. Keep posting please...love watching some of my local trails and really keen to get out to Buxton. Had it planned over the summer but never could quite get away from the kids for a day!

Looks like that trail gives you a real solid workout. A couple gnarly sections looks like it took a bit of muscling the bike around. Awesome video, I liked the third person perspective of some of the features

Thanks. Third person works great when sessioning but takes time in filming and editing. Workout yes. My core certainly felt it that night.

Froff Bottlecaps is pretty gnarly. A great trail. Also check out To The Valley Below. It’s tamer but great single track. A bit further away is Lyer Lyer, just as techy and great flow section at the end

It’s not in silvan it’s in mt d
@Sportilium
@Sportilium 3 года назад
Yeah I see what you mean. I’d say it’s considered part of the Silvan trails. Technically it’s not Mt D either but Kalorama or Mt Evelyn. Bit like how Red Hill trails are Dromana or Arthur’s seat.
