On December 17, 2001, one day after the infamous Bottlegate incident between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Cleveland Browns, it happened again. At a Monday Night Football game between the Saints and the Rams, roughly 24 hours later, we got Bottlegate 2. This is the story, and the video footage, behind that

Browns got screwed on Bottlegate 1. Don't care if the refs were having communication issues. If they let the Browns start the next play (the spike) then they lost the opportunity to review the play. The game is there for the players and the fans, not the refs.

@@giantsr1eva because the rules in all of NFL forever is once the next play is run, that's it, whatever the call on the field is stands and there is no going back. No one said they couldn't review it, they failed to do so and came up with bullshit reasons why they failed to do so and consciously made a decision to ignore a very well known rule. They placed a new spot for the ball and blew the whistle for them to run a new play, once that ball is snapped on the new play, whatever happened previously is over. There is no arguing that, that's how the game is played. It's still played that way today and I guarantee you will never see this happen again because of this day.

@@CulperCast Mike Pereira said that if you tried to replay the replay buzz, there would be no visual evidence to support it. You may also want to consider that prior to this game, Saints WR, Albert Connell, was accused of stealing $4,000 out of the locker room from teammate, RB, Deuce McCallister. Connell would never play in the NFL again after signing a five-year, $13 million contract that included a $2.5 million signing bonus prior to the 2001 season. Imagine the distraction of the incident, especially of a highly paid player from the team. The Saints as a team wasn't focused because of the distraction and that blown call by the official in this game compounded the situation on Monday Night Football.

0:34 the refs were NOT trying to review the last play. If they were, the whistle would have been blown and they wouldn't have continued play. The fact is the NFL and its terrible officials STOLE this from the Browns. As soon as they snapped the ball, that previous play should have been over. They got a call from NY saying to review it, but they got the call AFTER the ball was snapped. The NFL doesn't always follow it's own rules, and most of its current rules are opinions (taunting, excessive celebration, etc). It is a way for them to control the outcome without it seeming too obvious. But this situation with the Browns was a blatant disregard for the rules. And it wasn't a simple 2 kneel downs to end the game. The refs ended it with 48 seconds to go (because they were scared for their safety), everyone went back into the locker room and undressed. Then NY called again and made everyone finish the game officially, so they all went BACK out to the field with the angry fans and the Jags kneeled.
@giantsr1eva

@lalreadyhaveaname2 The referees overruled the spike play so that they could go back 1 play to review the incomplete pass. Quincy Morgan clearly dropped the ball which means that the pass is incomplete. The replay booth buzzed prior to the snap, so it was a legal review. The Browns could have drafted Donavan McNabb or claimed Kurt Warner of off the Rams.

I watched both games as a 12-year old with my uncle and I remember after the second incident I was like "well, I guess this is the thing now, huh." The difference here is that the PI call was questionable and probably a bad overall call, but nothing outrageous compared to what happens in other games. What happened in Cleveland was a complete unmitigated disaster from the officiating team. It's amazing to see how MNF now is basically the bottom feeder national game of the entire week. Back then, it was easily the biggest game of the week and we'd stay up that late to watch it.

I'm a bit shocked that once the play was reversed due to the pass not being fully caught and ruled incomplete, forcing the Browns to turnover on downs and giving the Jags the ensuing drive in the process due to that overturn, the time clock wasn't resetted back to the accurate amount of time where the spot occured, which was about 1:02 left in the game instead of 48 seconds. Either way, the Jags would still win, but it would take an extra victory formation knee to run down the clock.

Which is better than if you did nothing but spike a bottle on every single play.

What the Creator / narrator of this video fails to mention is that the Browns already ran a play, making it AGAINST THE RULES to review the play prior... And no, the refs did not try to stop the play before the ball was spiked. They ruled it an incomplete pass. Then they tried to backtrack.

If these guys were so scared of plastic bottles they would have absolutely loved pre-Ruthian baseball when actual bottle dodging was just part of any pop up in foul territory and fights were routine.

It seems like the home team coach could have gotten a mic or a bullhorn and tried to calm things down. It might have helped.

Seems like an odd time to do that with all that time left in the game.

If the officials had actually been doing there job, it never would've happened. Yet here we are in 2024 and the official still can't get the calls right.
