Hey Folks, quick experiment I did at home trying to determine how long I could get this BougeRV 200 Watt solar panel to power my small chest freezer I keep stored in my garage. I think the results were pretty good, and knowing I would not be able to compensate fully for the power draws overnight, this panel put enough juice back into the battery to keep my freezer running off-grid for 6 days (could have been 7 but I cut the test short)
Below is the Amazon Affiliate link to this BougeRV solar panel I used during my testing if you are interested in checking it out:

This panel can put out close to 100 watts ru-vid.comUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

Great job! In an emergency you could have also put a timer on the freezer to kickoff for a while at night. That way you would shift usage to sunlight hours. There would be some loss due to recapture, but it would be during sun productive hours. Overall, I got a good idea from your test of what needs to be done to fun a double door fridge. Thanks!

I just bought two of those with the charge controller. I decided to send one of the panels back and just use the one. I had solar panels on my last two RVs, and they were 100 watts each. So I think one will be enough for my purposes. The foam packing came in handy to kneel on while I was on the hot roof. Good quality Bourge all around.

Hey Eric, first off, thanks so much for this. I wasnt even sure what it was (because i'm not a RU-vid superstar) and had to figure out what a "super thanks" even was....and I greatly appreciate it! 2nd, yeah....I "can" put solar panels on my roof, but for this video I did not feel like going through the hassle of contacting the HOA, getting my awesome "architectural" committee approval and then drilling into my roof. Also, we won't be in this house forever so no need to put solar panels on the roof and spend all that time if we won't be here much longer. Hopefully we can find a nice piece of land where I don't have to worry about HOA's and I can do whatever I want to my own property ;) But again, thanks so much bud!

Great video and answered a lot of questions about capacity etc. I think it was pretty darned impressive given your limitations with the placement of the panel. I guess it is safe to guess that had the panels been properly oriented south and with optimal angles it could possibly have run 10 days or more. Another 200 watt will be interesting. I assume you turned off the controller each night. I love your dolly and I assume there is a video on the build. I subbed and will take a look around your channel. I have pretty much everything pulled together to build a system. I have two two hundred watt Renogy portables, four LifePo4 batteries. I am trying to prepare for hurricane season. During hunting season I will place two of the batteries and the inverter in my travel trailer which has a 160 watt installed on the roof. I would like to add another 160 top side. I can also bring along my portable panels and controller and tie that in as well. Thank you for sharing.

This was actually a very good test of solar/battery/device power usage. I have the same situation with eastern sun for one solar panel and another solar project, for deck lighting, with the panel facing west. At approx. 12:45pm the eastern panel, mounted on the side of my garage, loses light. Shortly after the western panel picks up light until dusk. I'm able to gather enough solar power in the time I have sun on both projects, as they are both low wattage. Again great and informative test. Great testing. BTW, to closer number power being pulled from battery, you need to factor in the inverter efficiency, 85% is typical, so you were consuming 4.4kWh measured on the AC output of the inverter, that means the power consumption on the DC side of the inverter will be about 4.4kWh/0.85 = 5.18kWh.

One big loss is inverter idle when the compressor isn’t running. A chest freezer can keep food cold for 48+ hours and should be able to cool back down fully from a short off time in 4 hours or so. Run the freezer when there is sun and cut off freezer at night. If you do this, you should be able to run the freezer indefinitely since you are adding power during the day.

That's because the Charge Controller has no ability to measure the output of the Battery. I believe that if you had the BougeRV inverter then the Inverter would connect to the App and fill in the discharge values. With that two panel setup I think that would be enough for a basic RV in the summer time but I would want to double that capacity (both in terms of batteries and panels) for a rig built with long term use in mind (I am thinking van-life style rigs and possibly holiday cabins).

This was a great little video Brian thanks for taking the time to put it out. The question is always "How much solar do you need". In the video I don't think you mentioned how many amps the fridge was using when it cycled. For me and maybe it's the wrong way to look at it but I'm trying to judge my system by my amps per hour output. So how many amps did your fridge use when it cycled? With only 8 amps going into the battery it would never stay topped off it your usage was 8 amps. Is that the right way to see it? If your solar power was 400 watts putting out 17 amps would that have solved it? Doubling your wattage and amp input would that have been enough? My camper van if everything ran all the time uses about 9 amps and hour. What do you think? Thanks and good work.

Thank you. I think if I would have had 400 watts, or even better, 600 watts worth of solar I could run this indefinitely ( with good weather of course). 200 watts just isn’t enough to charge up what I lost overnight.

The angle of the panel could be improved to increase your charge at any given time. Laying it flat on the ground is not optimal, other than for a short period of time.

That output refers to the load slot from your charge controller, for lights etc. I think, I never use it. My way of thinking, 600 watts of panels would give you more of a long-term solution for that battery, that's depending on rain etc. Your test did answer my question about short term solutions, in case of tornadoes, hurricanes, gorilla etc. I hope your mom didn't get mad at you for throwing her curtains away. I also hope you ain't mad at me for saying you were gonna get a whooping. LOL. Hope the hoa ppl didn't get on you too bad.

You could probably run the freezer indefinitely if you allow the batteries to charge and power the freezer off during charge times. The freezer does not need to operate 100 percent of the time unless your opening it constantly, but obviously that should be avoided. Just a thought. Nice information to know, so thanks for that....

If the poo hit the fan,you could unplug the freezer at night.If you didn't open it you could probably get away with it staying frozen overnight,then you could plug it backup during the hottest part of the day,and make power also.

That does not work. All you would do is put off the power usage until morning. The freezer would run continuously until it got to temp again.
@kevinnewmanwyo
@kevinnewmanwyo Год назад
The 0 on your discharge is on your charge controller. There is likely a DC output on the charge controller, and you have nothing in it. If you want to see output from the battery, you have to meter coming off of your battery to the inverter.

Your charge controller is only going to show output wattage from its load terminals which your aren't using--and which you shouldn't use for the size loads you're running.

@@BrianWatersOutdoors You're welcome. That's actually why you need the battery monitor. If you were just running small loads out of your inverter, the inverter would do a pretty good job of estimating your battery conditions.

So, technically I can install them, but I have to get them approved from an “architectural committee” and get written sign off. They can’t deny the request, but I know I’m not going to be here forever and wasn’t going through all that mess just for this little test. I need to find me some land way out in the country👍🏻👍🏻
