A suggestion , use a box or tote or tub to dump out things like purses and bags so you don't have to reach your hands into a bag full of stuff that could have something dangerous mixed in. Then you can sort the stuff.

My aunt, back in the 50's had a pull out pen brooch like the one you found. She was a waitress and all of the waitress had one so they could just let go of the pen and it would rewind so they didn't have to put a pen in the pocket. They looked like gold also but weren't so hope yours is.
