Hydrangeas are wonderful shrubs. They flower for ages in summer and autumn. They are very versatile and work in a range of planting schemes from classic country garden to contemporary borders with ornamental grasses.
They are suitable for sun or partial shade; I wouldn't put them in deep shade. They like a moist but well drained soil.
The most common species is Hyrdangea macrophylla. There are two types, mop heads and lacecaps. Mop heads have a dense, domed head of ray florets while lacecaps are flatter with small, insignificant flowers in the centre which are edged with ray florets.
If you want a blue hydrangea, plant it in ericaceous compost as it likes acid soil.
These gorgeous shrubs are so generous and will keep giving you colour and beauty for a long time. Enjoy!
