I was 12 when my patrician grandmother took my brother and I to see this in New York when the film was released. Massive theater and screen. There was a picture book you could buy. Grandmother traveled a lot and wanted to see what Tahiti looked like should she wish to go there. My father was captain of the Hydrofoil ship Denison, a hydrofoil research vessel that operated out of a ship yard in Oyster Bay NY. At one point the Bounty was docked down the key from the Denison. Father took us over to see her. As a sailor I simply could not believe that a captain would sail her into a hurricane and which resulted in her sinking.

@615855 4 года назад
It is amazing to know that they built this exact replica of HMS Bounty for the purpose of making the film and the ship was sailed to Tahiti to do the film. The only difference would have been internal and it no doubt had an engine and probably even generated electricity. Externally, the ship is the same as the original one. The ship existed until 2012 when it sank in a hurricane.

I have written before. It is interesting how after Bligh orders sails set on starboard tack, the footage shows the ship on both tacks. Further, Bounty did not fly Royals. Finally, the original order Set tops'ls and heads'ls starboard tack' is a problem. The ship is shown as port side to. Setting sails on starboard tack would merely drive it into the wharf. It is possible she had an anchor veered to starboard and the men on the windlass were bringing her to. In which case not nearly enough. Finally. Christian was an Able Seaman promoted Midshipman when he embarked First Lieutenant although Bligh promoted him to sailing master. Here the Sailing Master is standing doing nothing. It was he not Christian or Bligh who gave the sailing orders.

William Bligh went on to become a Vice-Admiral. He retired to a grand town-house which is near the Imperial War Museum of today. He died after a heart attack in Bond Steet, London, on 7th December 1817, aged 63 years. He was no doubt doing his Christmas Shopping.

@andrewstackpool4911
@andrewstackpool4911 7 месяцев назад
Trevor Howard never put a foot wrong, even when confronted with a script that was nonsense. The book that came with the film has a wonderful shot of him in costume playing with some children in Tahiti. Was Bligh the madman and villain Hollywood made him? No, he actually was very concerned about his men and actually flogged far fewer than Cook. He had some mental issue in that he would lose his temper - with officers - but forget it a few minutes later. Before the mutiny which did not happen as here, he bad asked Christian to dine with him. The fact is it was Quintal who led the mutiny under Christian. Whether there was a relationship between the two men, the jury is out. It is interesting that Mel Gibson said that his character should have been more evil as initially he put Bligh and the loyal sailors in the cutter which was rotten. After Bligh interceded he gave them the long boat and some supplies. But he intended that they die at sea. Too bad Bligh was ten times the seaman he would ever be.

Despite the film's awful reputation, Brando's adolescent antics (both Trevor Howard and Richard Harris swore they would never work with him again), two directors who simply threw in the towel (Carol Reed and Lewis Milestone) and the runaway budget that almost sank MGM, the film does hold up well and begs some critical reassessing. It boasts a fairly good script (despite Brando's lisping, swish-buckling attempt at a British accent), terrific supporting cast and splendid cinematography by the great Robert Surtees. And, as evidenced here, Bronislau Kaper's majestic and magnificent soundtrack is, along with Alfred Newman's for "How The West Was Won" from the same year, one of the finest ever scored for a Hollywood epic. Thanks for posting.

@@MrDaiseymay NO. He was sent to stop the evil rum trade run by the likes of Macarthur and Grose of the Rum Corps. These people saw the colony as a way to build mighty personal empires worked by convict labour. All same England. The deal was simple. They would get crops from the settlers and pay them in rum. Worth almost nothing. They would then sell the crops to visiting ships for huge profits, Bligh worked to end the trade as directed and succeeded. However, in the process he made enemies of these powerful men who saw him as a threat to their corrupt work. They needed him removed hence the mutiny by the very people who were supposed to provide the security of the colony. Very much a parallel to Bounty where Christian and others wanted to stay in Tahiti and not return to England. I note that Bligh fought hard for the humble farmers around Parramatta and Penrith to protect their rights. He was actually very popular and the insurrection was by that corrupt military group the Rum Corps. Why his replacement Macquarie brought his own regiment. Had I been in command of a ship there, I'd have opened fire on the corps barracks and sent my Marines in to finish the job.
