For Anthony Bourdain, happiness is eating something delicious in a bowl that he can't quite identify as scooters go by.

Those bowls of com hến Huế and bún hến Huế most likely cost 20.000₫ or about $.86 USD each. Huế (where that scene was shot) has some of the best food in Viet Nam. I've been there many times and use to live 2.5 hours to the south in tp. Da Nang, also one of the great food cities of the world. BTW he wasn't kidding about the fish sauce. That wasn't the standard and mild nước mắm but mắm nêm that can double as paint stripper. Search YT for the video "My favorite dish | Summer Le" for a great intro to it.

Sudhir Kakar I grew up in France with french and khmere/vietnamese meals from my parents. They're all delicious and different on their own, don't know wich i prefer but I for sure can't leave without any of them :D

@Sudhir Kakar You know the french had cultural food influence in most asian countries like vietnam so saying it's better than the french... that's a double negative considering most of the recipes they used are from each other, and better yet evolved better.

It actually made me feel closer to my country of origin despite I didn't fly back home for my first time till 32 years later in search of family. Thank you for being so honest and authentic and showing cultural diversity to be so relatable to the rest of the world and an inspiration to myself and many others. I'm a returning veteran of the American War in Vietnam. I'm watching this from Quy Nhơn, Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam, after eating some delicious street food for dinner. The cinematography and editing do a great job of capturing the atmosphere in most Vietnamese towns, on any given evening. It's an experience that repeatedly makes my life worth living longer. I wish he were here to join me. "May His Memory Be Eternal!"

I can see now why he enjoys Vietnam. Not only because of the food, but also the environment. For some maybe seeking a life where its all luxurious or modern, there are people like him where the simplest things is more than enough. Although the place is considered abit of a hectic, but still simple (in the right perspective that is). Can consider a hidden gem. A huge respect for the man, and may he rest in peace

Out of all the episodes I specifically remembered this line. I think he says it other times too. Basically happiness is a bowl of noodles in a hole in the wall experiencing and listening to the night life. He had such a good way with words. It made you want to be eating there at that moment away from chaos enjoying the simplest of things.

I know what he means now. Ever since I went to Korea, there's a certain feeling about being lost in another country, eating good food, and being around people who are almost nothing like you but also the same people born in a different place. It shows you how small you are but how you can enjoy life so much by looking back. You don't need to think, just feel and be free.

When it was mentioned that Anthony Bourdain killed himself I immediately thought of the despair I felt when learning Robin Williams killed himself too and how I so badly wished I knew both of them and could've made them laugh or given them a sense of worth. @@peakarach7051 Excuse me! Vietnamese food might be originally influenced by Chinese food & French food but never ever related to Laos, we don't even know Laos have its food style, Laos food is basically NAMELESS & UNKNOWN in the world!
