Kat Ellinger is an absolute behemoth in modern film analysis. She has contributed to an incredible amount of physical media releases over the last decade including Daughters of Darkness, Flesh for Frankenstein, Terror, Jeremy, Whore, The Killer of Dolls, Queens of Evil, and MANY more. She is at the absolute pinnacle of audio commentaries and visual essays but has now taken this to the next step by writing/directing/editing/and pouring her entire personality into the new documentary: Orchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin.

I was able to view the documentary early and discuss it with Kat before diving into the world of physical media, followed by a humanizing conversation on imposter syndrome. Please give it a listen and follow Kat at all of the links below!

Absolutely a great, genuinely down to earth interview. I know that you and Kat love film, both as fans and within a constructive manner, but the general ease of dialogue between the two of you is what makes this conversation truly excellent. Through genuine honest dialogue, I found this conversation to be so much more insightful into the inner workings of her important subcategorized work, breathing extra contextual life into film to garner it further understanding, respect, and fandom. I will continue by saying this, that by having any personality of such great merit in the interviewee's chair, there often needs to be an interviewer to match the dynamism. In my mind, this is a great conversation between two important people in film. Excellent work all around, this was a very inspiring video.

Great interview! Glad you had Kat on as a guest, I'm a big fan of her commentaries and podcasts. I cannot wait to see the Jean Rollin documentary, I'm happy it's getting attention and making the rounds at festivals, etc, but a very selfish part of me wishes it would hit a streaming service ASAP.

I’m not surprised you came in prepared and respectful, but I was a bit surprised at how natural and human Kat was. What a living legend. Very well done sir.

Kudos.I believe we discussed Kat in the comments last week. She's always gold. I bought two titles this week because of her involvement. Looking forward to Jean Rollin film. My first Rollin VHS bootlegs go back to the 80s. Wretched quality. I spent a good deal getting The Living Dead Girl on laserdisc in the 90s. The blu-rays have been a revelation. Cheers!

Another great interview. As I have been bad about listening to commentaries for a while now, I have only known of her work through her name coming up in many, many lists of special features. However, I will need to change that. Her approach to her work on commentaries as discussed in the interview is one that I'm glad is being celebrated. Will most likely start with the upcoming documentary as I have only seen one of his films.

After the documentary, I definitely suggest starting with her written work and visual essays. Much easier to digest than diving into an entire film worth of commentary.

Great interview Ryan. I love Kat Ellinger and even more because she is a brit. Its good she pointed out about Redemption because over here in the UK films by Rollin ( not Rollan) as you over in North America calls his name. In the 90s Jean Rollin films were so mistreated by the censors and movies like Living dead girl" (1982) was cut by our BBFC nearly 2 minutes 24 seconds when Mr Nigel Wingrove submitted this film amongst his others and the Scala cinema in London owned by Stephen Woolley was the only venue i know of to see European cinema in the 1980s. Miss Ellinger knows excactly how hard it was to be a writer and film reviewer at this time. Even when i studied Media at College i found it increasingly difficult to get Rollin and Larraz titles for my course work that were Directors full works. Again thankyou Ryan for this interview with Miss Ellinger.

Darren! Thank you so much for the information. The BBFC censoring has been so interesting for me to learn more about, especially when compared to the ridiculous MPAA in America. I don’t really understand it all, but it is nice to hear more context. I sincerely hope we get to a point where all art is available in full and we just warn people what it will contain… I don’t know. That one is tough. Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate you being around.
