That is so right. The off-season is the time for fixing anything that is not perfect so you have time to get used to the change. Even changing sights or peep diameter takes a lot of time to get used to. Good luck and thanks for the input.

My method worked well for me in the past, but for some reason I sure messed it up in Jordan's case. The bow she ended up getting was maxed out on module adjustment and she was still at least an inch short of ideal, so we had to wait until after the season to send it back to Hoyt for different cams, different strings, different limbs and different modules. William, yes she did good. By the end she was shooting small groups at 20 yards. Was fun to see. She is athletic and that helps because the bow was easy for her to handle after a couple of weeks. Have a great day.

She is really solid. As I mentioned, I think that single trait was the thing that saved her season. But, she is going to have to learn to create a surprise release. When you do that, the follow-through is never quite so rock-solid, but you still need to try to keep the bow on target to the extent that is possible when you aren't timing it. Thanks Mitchell. I have played a lot of sports in my life and in the end, I finally realized that there are no secrets to success - just keep focused on the basics and master them. The old saying that if you take care of the small stuff, the big stuff will take care of itself definitely applies to archery too.

Good point. I think watching your bow hand throughout the shot (what it does - snap shut, stay relaxed, etc.) is something really worth noting. You can learn a lot about a person's shooting by just watching their bow hand. Have a great day.

It took me at least a month to get decent with a bow when I started my second time. My first time was when I was 14 and I just shot instinctively with a Bear Whitetail Hunter and 1918 arrows! I was OK to about 15 yards. That lasted about four years until I went off to college. Then, after I graduated and took my first job in Michigan, I started again and bought a High Country Trophy Hunter (I think) bow and shot a release aid. I did get some advice from the archery shop guys and I shot an indoor winter league, so that was really good for me. It takes time, but it pays to get off on the right foot so you have fewer bad habits to break later. Thanks for the comment.

@@bill-winke Wow 1918 arrows? Were they carbon? Lol I have a similar story a guy I bassed fished with got me started and I hunted with a PSE Nova. The first time I shot at a deer was at 25 yards and somehow I put it behind the shoulder (with a fixed blade) had good blood and complete pass through but never found the deer. I was pretty disappointed I ended up having a falling out with the guy who got me started and I didnt hunt for 8 years. Started watching Seek One in Atlanta (where im from) and Midwest Whitetail (no joke) really wanted to try bowhunting again and be successful. I love the fact that you have to draw it and hold the vertical bow while aiming it. Crossbows aren't the same as vertical bows. I never condemn anyone who is using a legal method, but I want to keep it challenging for my own purposes. If I was good enough with traditional archery equipment, that is what I would use. Someday I am sure I will switch over. Have a great day.

Very good point. For sure, Jordan was not going to take a shot past 20 yards so those other pins served no purpose. Maybe this year she will practice at 30 to make 20 seem easier, but I doubt she shoots past 20 even this year. Thanks for the input.

@@bill-winke another thing I like to get newbies to do it make a one dot target about 5” diameter. Sometimes too many dots can be distracting as their trying to pick only one out of the cluster.

That is a good question. I will ask her. She has actually shot a number of deer and turkeys with a gun so I think that buck fever wasn't over the top, but she definitely kept her cool. Maybe she is just a natural - some people are.

I do use a D-Loop now, but I always attached directly to the string because with whitetail hunting, shot timing is usually more important than hair-splitting accuracy. I can connect to the string very quickly without looking down. I can't do that with the loop. The loop is just one more thing I have to get right during the moment of truth. I am always looking for the simplest possible system. Also, attaching to the string maximizes power stroke so you get the most possible stored energy in the bow when drawing it. I do think I will stick with the loop, but I never had a problem with accuracy or tuning when attaching directly to the string. I tied a knot of loop cord on the string under the arrow. That was the cushion between the release and the arrow nock. I also wrapped the serving in the point where the release contacted. Both of those factors seemed to smooth things out and keep the release from pinching too much. Thanks for the comment and the support. Have a great day.

I think the real issue is the scent you leave when you go get the arrows after the hunt. I don't think the arrows themselves were enough to spook a buck, but again, we saw so few deer that it is hard to say. Never saw that as a negative factor in the corn plot when there were a few deer out there feeding. But, I do think the ground scent could be a problem. Definitely a tradeoff. We tried to shoot them, mostly, in the directions that we would be going when we left the stand, but not always. She probably practiced about 10 minutes every day, roughly. Not tons of arrows. She would have gotten better faster if she had shot more arrows each day. But if you have to choose between lots of arrows or fewer really good ones, always select the quality over quantity. I think after you get your strength and basic form, it is all about making 10 to 15 really good shots in each session. Much more than that (at least for me) I start to get lazy and sloppy. Good questions.

I have had deer actually smell practice arrows I’ve shot with no concern. I do wipe them down with no scent wipe but I agree with Bill, the bigger issue might be ground scent. I usually shoot to an off side myself but many years bow hunting and feel a practice arrow is still a must for me.

I do think one pin is a good idea for a lot of people. In that case, I would set it for 25 yards. That will get in the kill zone on a whitetail for any distance from 15 to 30 yards. You will have to hold a few inches low on shots under 15 yards. That would be a good strategy. Good question. Have a great day.

@@russelllangworthy8855 no I already know of a few that look good. Talked to a wp guy yesterday here and was a good first meet. I used to own here before so I know a little bit coming here. Also looked in Illinois and Missouri. I visited my ole Illinois stomping grounds and nothing has changed. Trying to keep it on the DL opsec as I don't trust people till my name's on the contract. Illinois laws have changed over the last 10 years and I'm hearing stuff that the quality is lacking compared too was it once was??? Nothing is cheap and I know there's nothing better than boots on the ground. I was even told about bills old Iowa farm being up for sale and then later told it's now under contract. It's wild this place is like a time capsule nothing much changed. I been gone for a long time and own in Ohio now. Now I'm older not in good a shape so my hunting strategy will employ box blinds food afternoon hunts and key late season food.

Even if all you do is tense your hand and don't try to apply torque, the arrow flight and accuracy will suffer. The bow hand is your main link to the bow. You can spoil the shot with the way you hold the release at full draw, but not nearly as easily as you can with a faulty bow hand. Good point.
