These five tips will get you 80% of the way to your potential as an archer. And if you are an average archer right now, they will help you shoot at least twice as well. That means smaller groups at 20 yards and an increase in maximum range by at least five yards.
Last fall, I taught my daughter how to shoot a bow - starting from scratch. She made a lot of progress fast. Within a month she was good enough to start killing deer. If you are a beginner, like she was, this progression is a great track to follow for game-taking accuracy in a month or less. Good luck and good shooting.

We appreciate the comment and the support. We hope that Jordan's continued presence on the show will attract young girls (and women) to the sport. We are seeing that already from people we meet at shows and just out in public. Have a great day.

One mistake I made was not testing for eye dominance when I purchased a bow for my oldest son when he was young. The problem didn’t show up until 20 yards, his groups really started to open up. Checked everything twice including his form. Then it hit me, his mother (my wife) and her father are right handed but left eye dominant. I switched him over to a left handed bow and we never looked back, he’s an excellent shot.

Kudos to you Jordan. Picking it up so close to the season and putting in the work to be a good shot is impressive. Good timing of this video. This is the time of year when beginners should be putting in practice time and really getting proficient with their bow. Or to make changes to their equipment. So when opening day comes you’ll be ready.

That is so right. The off-season is the time for fixing anything that is not perfect so you have time to get used to the change. Even changing sights or peep diameter takes a lot of time to get used to. Good luck and thanks for the input.

Wingspan divided by 2.5 will get you pretty darn close on draw length . I actually miss the hunting videos from last fall. Was always looking on RU-vid to see if there was a new one up when I got in from the woods :-) God bless and looking forward to next fall and everything in between.

My method worked well for me in the past, but for some reason I sure messed it up in Jordan's case. The bow she ended up getting was maxed out on module adjustment and she was still at least an inch short of ideal, so we had to wait until after the season to send it back to Hoyt for different cams, different strings, different limbs and different modules. It should be much better now. Have a great day.

You mentioned “floating the pin” on the target here. That helped me immensely back in the day when you and John Dudley did a shooting info session. Until then my shooting was very inconsistent. As long as you focus on a spot (aim small miss small) while floating the pin as you squeeze through the shot, accuracy is greatly improved. I thank you both for that. Perfect practice makes perfect but now I need a red dot sight because I can’t see my pins very well anymore. Always something...more $$ cha ching.

@bill-winke Год назад
I am with you on eye-sight. I struggle to see my pins now and have opted for the sight light (lighted pins). That really helps me in almost every situation. Have a great day.

@bill-winke
@bill-winke Год назад
She is really solid. As I mentioned, I think that single trait was the thing that saved her season. But, she is going to have to learn to create a surprise release. When you do that, the follow-through is never quite so rock-solid, but you still need to try to keep the bow on target to the extent that is possible when you aren't timing it. Thanks for the comment.

It took me at least a month to get decent with a bow when I started my second time. My first time was when I was 14 and I just shot instinctively with a Bear Whitetail Hunter and 1918 arrows! I was OK to about 15 yards. That lasted about four years until I went off to college. Then, after I graduated and took my first job in Michigan, I started again and bought a High Country Trophy Hunter (I think) bow and shot a release aid. I did get some advice from the archery shop guys and I shot an indoor winter league, so that was really good for me. It takes time, but it pays to get off on the right foot so you have fewer bad habits to break later. Thanks for the comment.

@@bill-winke Wow 1918 arrows? Were they carbon? Lol I have a similar story a guy I bassed fished with got me started and I hunted with a PSE Nova. The first time I shot at a deer was at 25 yards and somehow I put it behind the shoulder (with a fixed blade) had good blood and complete pass through but never found the deer. I was pretty disappointed I ended up having a falling out with the guy who got me started and I didnt hunt for 8 years. Started watching Seek One in Atlanta (where im from) and Midwest Whitetail (no joke) really wanted to try bowhunting again and be successful. Thanks for taking the time to answer Bill it means alot take care!💪👍

Practice Practice Practice. it comes down to muscle memory in time. low poundage to start for beginners so you can shoot alot is best , work your way out for yardage in time, i here a lot of up an comers going to the crossbow . Reason i here most is no need to practice like shooting a compound Good to see you shooting the vertical bow . nothing better in my opinion !!!
@bill-winke
@bill-winke Год назад
I love the fact that you have to draw it and hold the vertical bow while aiming it. Crossbows aren't the same as vertical bows. I never condemn anyone who is using a legal method, but I want to keep it challenging for my own purposes. If I was good enough with traditional archery equipment, that is what I would use. Someday I am sure I will switch over. Have a great day.

One thing I try to new shooters to do is use one pin until they have achieved a decent level of form and consistency. On a multi pin dropping all the pins other than the top one. Less confusing and it’s easier to know where that pin was when it fired. 👍👍
@bill-winke
@bill-winke Год назад
Very good point. For sure, Jordan was not going to take a shot past 20 yards so those other pins served no purpose. Maybe this year she will practice at 30 to make 20 seem easier, but I doubt she shoots past 20 even this year. Thanks for the input.

how come your not choosing to use a d loop? Having that nock point with the release directly under it creates pinch and can negatively effect accuracy. I used to not use a d loop and when I decided to add one I saw an immediate increase in accuracy and consistency in my arrow flight. Just curios. Thanks!!! Keep the uploads coming!
@bill-winke
@bill-winke Год назад
I do use a D-Loop now, but I always attached directly to the string because with whitetail hunting, shot timing is usually more important than hair-splitting accuracy. I can connect to the string very quickly without looking down. I can't do that with the loop. The loop is just one more thing I have to get right during the moment of truth. I am always looking for the simplest possible system. Also, attaching to the string maximizes power stroke so you get the most possible stored energy in the bow when drawing it. I do think I will stick with the loop, but I never had a problem with accuracy or tuning when attaching directly to the string. I tied a knot of loop cord on the string under the arrow. That was the cushion between the release and the arrow nock. I also wrapped the serving in the point where the release contacted. Both of those factors seemed to smooth things out and keep the release from pinching too much. Thanks for the comment and the support. Have a great day.

You can ask questions here and I think our viewers (or myself) can help you. I also did this video on setting up Jordan's bow. I would probably not attach release to the string at first but use a nocking loop instead for starters. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ekOa5l5uZSc.html

Is there any concern of spooking deer by having scent from practice arrows out there? In that one month time, how many hours do you think Jordan spent practicing? Good information for beginners.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke Год назад
I think the real issue is the scent you leave when you go get the arrows after the hunt. I don't think the arrows themselves were enough to spook a buck, but again, we saw so few deer that it is hard to say. Never saw that as a negative factor in the corn plot when there were a few deer out there feeding. But, I do think the ground scent could be a problem. Definitely a tradeoff. We tried to shoot them, mostly, in the directions that we would be going when we left the stand, but not always. She probably practiced about 10 minutes every day, roughly. Not tons of arrows. She would have gotten better faster if she had shot more arrows each day. But if you have to choose between lots of arrows or fewer really good ones, always select the quality over quantity. I think after you get your strength and basic form, it is all about making 10 to 15 really good shots in each session. Much more than that (at least for me) I start to get lazy and sloppy. Good questions.
@WilliamAM43
@WilliamAM43 Год назад
I have had deer actually smell practice arrows I’ve shot with no concern. I do wipe them down with no scent wipe but I agree with Bill, the bigger issue might be ground scent. I usually shoot to an off side myself but many years bow hunting and feel a practice arrow is still a must for me.

Great article. Can you comment on using wrong pin in stressful situations. I have problems with that. With bows being so fast and pins close together and not shooting at long distances. Can you comment on using 1 pin. Thanks
@bill-winke
@bill-winke Год назад
I do think one pin is a good idea for a lot of people. In that case, I would set it for 25 yards. That will get in the kill zone on a whitetail for any distance from 15 to 30 yards. You will have to hold a few inches low on shots under 15 yards. That would be a good strategy. Good question. Have a great day.

torqueing the bow hand is so big. just practice shooting with small amounts of torque right and left. it will change impact and arrow flight in very big ways. Do not torque your bow with squeezing your bow hand too hard
@bill-winke
@bill-winke Год назад
Even if all you do is tense your hand and don't try to apply torque, the arrow flight and accuracy will suffer. The bow hand is your main link to the bow. You can spoil the shot with the way you hold the release at full draw, but not nearly as easily as you can with a faulty bow hand. Good point.
