I decided so set up my own basement shop after the tech at the shop I bought my bow from didn't know how to tie a D-Loop! I learned everything from scratch and practiced on my own bow and now I've started working on my friends bows. I picked up a few new things in this video, but I think the biggest is taking measurements before you touch the bow to get a baseline. Awesome content!

This is exactly why it pays to get the knowledge and skills to work on your own bow. So many shops, even good shops won’t care for your bow how you would, and get everything in time and tuned. Simply because most people who shoot for hunting don’t care enough and think the best that the bow will be is from the manufacturer. They don’t understand how things stretch and wear out and how even a bow that was in tune, won’t stay there without maintenance. This is why I got the stuff to work on my own. You can do A LOT with a basic set of tools. Some levels, T square, a tape, bow vise, press, and scale will pay dividends.

Perfect timing. Turkey bow needs new threads, and I bought a new leftover 2015 model that's giving me a little peep twist. I'm one of those that will bring the hang tag with to ensure everything is back up to spec, will be 2nd trip to new shop, the first trip was a positive experience. Wish me luck.

As somebody who was heavy in photography before archery I always carry camera/lens cleaning kit. This consist of rocket blower, soft (makeup) brush, microfiber cloth and few Q-tips. Works real good for lens, peep and cleaning in general. In my opinion rocket blower should be must for any good archery shop.

The saddest thing about this video is, it has less than 10k views...time again and again, you put out killer videos with honest and straight forward information. I am new to archery, the line I have used is “you don’t know, what you don’t know”, and I am learning a lot. Thank you. I have binge watched yours, elk shape, and Brandon McDonalds videos and I have learned a lot. I hope your success continues to go up; if you can, can you add links to the tools you use or recommend for working (tuning) on a bow (after posting the comment, I see you have already added some links). Keep killing It, and looking forward to your next video, or another already posted gem.

Dude you had me laughing my ass off with the "throw up in a bucket" comment. Interesting video though. When I first got into archery, I met a couple of real good pros at my club who really helped me to understand the inner workings of a bow. Being a very hands on and very mechanical guy, I took the time to learn everything I needed to know to work on my bow for about 95% of things and it was worth it. Not only does it save money, but it makes the sport a lot more interesting when you know what is going on and can do your own work. All adds to the enjoyment of the sport IMO.

20 years ago, I bought a right-handed Hoyt. Better said; I was sold a right-handed Hoyt. As I learned about archery, I discovered that I am left eye dominant - I knew then that I was also left- handed. I just bought another bow, right-handed, why change now? (on the new bow, cams were ill-timed) Had I encountered good people in an honest bow shop, I would be shooting left-handed now. On my next B-Day I'll turn a crotchety 70. I trust far fewer people than I did even 20 years ago.

My local archery pro shop is operated by a guy that gets angry if you ask him simple questions like "how do you measure draw length," because he only has his costumers draw back a bow and look at them and will not adjust an adjustable bow to given draw length. I also mentioned that my sons and I were going to build our arrows to be stiffer with a greater FOC and he got angry and waved his hands off and said that's all nonsense. It really sucks that there are some people that refuse to learn some things and get angry if someone presents a new perspective that might include science and mathematics. Frustrating
@myotheraccount5947
@myotheraccount5947 3 года назад
He also argued against putting a kisser button on the string because "it rests in the middle of your lips" and argued that it doesn't rest in the corner of your mouth. He's a real piece of work
@renatugaming5730
@renatugaming5730 3 года назад
@@myotheraccount5947 I would try to get a different pro shop if needed. If he's not giving basic advice that every archer should know ( how to adjust draw length, how to pick right arrow length, how to adjust draw weight etc.) then they wouldn't be qualified to do even more advanced archery work (paper tuning, nock tuning, changing top hats on Mathews, changing strings and cables etc.) Not that paper tuning is difficult, but figuring it out can take some time. If it's just that one guy, then maybe try coming to a different employee (unless the person you're talking about is the manager and won't let the employees be educated). But I would highly encourage you to find a different shop and try them out and see how they would help you with an FOC setup or a kisser button. There is nothing wrong with a higher FOC setup as long as you go to a stiffer shaft considering it not only can help penetration, but can also help arrow flight. He probably is a person that doesn't believe in the reasons why it can help for some people that want to get more arrow weight. As for the kisser button, what they said was nonsense. It doesn't matter where the kisser button is on, as long as it can improve your anchor, you're good to go. If it's in the middle of your lips, that means you should probably check your draw length (probably not at this shop but another shop will do, you can also try contacting Nate and see if your anchor might be a bit off). If your draw length is too short, then the string won't line up with the corner of the mouth, but if middle of the mouth works for you, then go ahead.
@ScottWConvid19
@ScottWConvid19 3 года назад
@@renatugaming5730 I guess you didn't quite understand what I tried to communicate about the kisser button. He discourages anyone getting a kisser button at all. His reasoning is that it set in the center of the lips. When the string is drawn back, touching your nose and cheeks, it's impossible for the mixer button to be smack in the middle of your lips. It'll either be touching you cheek, the corner of your lips or nothing at all. The string makes a straight line and the center of the lips is not in that line

Bowshops do t want you to know anything especially about the conditions that determine if you need new strings or cables. If there is some fraying of fuzziness, “oh. You need new strings AND cables.” A local shop that’s go e now, was the biggest in the area and most I’ve been in, charge $75 for laser tuning. Just moving here with everything a bow shop has in tools and equipment, 2 guys asked me to look at there NEW bows. A Hoyt and PSE. Both from the same guy. Both $75 laser set up wit all new accessories. I made the 2 bring they’re arrows and told them YOUR going to be here awhile as I’m not tuning your bow to me, but to you. (They didn’t come at the same time) So they were both desperate as hunting season in a few weeks. I had the shoot they’re bow in front of me. Both draw lengths bot way too long. Paper tears where 2-2.5” off. I got the DL correct first. Peep height set 2nd. I told them I’d help with the arrow spine and shooting flaws later. Anyways, long story short, PSE took 5 hours including arrow tuning and Hoyt 2 trips totaling a light the same. There wasn’t a possibility that either bow was laser tuned. Rest weren’t near any center shot. ATA and brace off too. I did this for free as I’m retired anyways and extremely knowledgeable in every way in bow technology, arrow building and shooting form. Yeah it takes longer to yoke tune and also put it back on the draw board to check the timing. That’s why there are bow shops. Good bow shops will do it.

I've been to my fair share of bow shops. Literally never seen any of these things used. Makes me a little sick thinking how much I paid them to just dick me over. Seems like if you want it done right these days you've gotta do it yourself.

Not everyone can afford 1700 for a new bow and thats why guys are still using 25yr old bows.

Nate can you please just move to southeast Ohio so you can work on my stuff? Your videos stress me out because I’m starting to have less and less confidence in the people that work on my bow.

If a person can't time their bow,I'd really hate to see their car engines. Seriously...a bit of common sense,makes it as ez as changing plugs and oil. Best thing people can do to tune their bows.....is stay away from all the armchair "pros" on internet forums.

So basically you do better work for people at you home shop than you do at the bow shop you work at. Your words not mine. If I owned the bow shop you worked at I would fire your ass! Your the reason folks are learning to do it ourselves.

Where did he say that? (Edit-If you're referring to 3:25 when he says that he'll give greater attention to the specs in his home shop than he will at the shop where he works, I can see where you might think that's what he was saying, however it sounds to me like he might be working at a busy shop that could be short staffed and he could be following his boss' protocol. He said "time is of the essence." I think it's an unfair assumption to think otherwise.

I agree with ya Chuck, that’s what I got out of it too. I think this is the norm these days. I drive 2 hours past 3 other shops to get done what I can’t do myself. These other shops just half ass stuff and send you walking. The shop I go to now takes their time and really goes over everything and has you shooting bullet holes through paper before you leave. It takes time and they do this with every customer. I might add that they are one of the busiest shops in the state with 3 dudes working their, so, the we are a busy shop don’t mean shit to me and it’s just an excuse.

Of course not. Absolutely ridiculous to think I don't put the full effort into work in the shop. What I said, and I have a podcast episode where I truly dive into this, is that all the time put into doing each individual step that I outlined isn't what a vast majority of archers are looking for. They want their bow to work and keep working reliably. I give everyone that (as well as my colleagues) and more at the shop and home. I just cannot justify a lot of time given to the extras I mentioned. And very few shops truly can either unless their quote large like Lancaster or Bow Rack where their staff is significantly larger. We are one of the best shops in the central PA area and work our tails off with 3-4 guys at peak season and it's still not enough to keep up with everyone's demands.

@@averagejackarchery I have many small shops in my area and I agree that everyone has a little amount of staff and lots of customers and they still can't keep up especially during hunting season and I don't blame them, there's a lot of guys coming in once and never coming back until next year.
