Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women. A substantial proportion of bowel cancer is preventable. The outlook depends strongly on how advanced it is at diagnosis; caught early the outlook is good, so screening is a major part of the public health response.
Other cancers of the gut are changing incidence; stomach cancer rates are falling, while oesophageal cancer is increasing in men.
This lecture will consider the prevention and treatment of these cancers.
