When I first heard Side 2 of Low... I don't remember what day it was but it changed me. Same when I heard Heroes. I am a different person now in the best way ever.
Elite Albums He says 'albums tend to get worse as they go on'.....meaning he thinks each particular album gets worse as it goes on. So there's no contradiction by putting his first album last. Meanwhile I don't necessarily agree with the bloke.
My list is completely different but still enjoyed watching this very much! My favourite album of Bowie’s is Ziggy Stardust - but my favourite Bowie song is Ashes to Ashes
Yes it is. Only the title track was from the TV show. The rest of the album was completely original material only loosely based on the snippets of music Bowie made for the show.
It is great to see a list which takes every song into account, allowing for often overlooked albums, such as Black Tie White Noise, to receive the credit they deserve. I absolutely loved this ranking. Thank you.
@@theeditorseye573 I just checked to see if you have made any more ranking videos and Boom there it was The Beatles Ranked. Just watched it on my TV. Superb! 👍
I never listened to LOW side 2 until I listened incessantly to PHILIP GLASS’s LOW SYMPHONY. I was embarrassed I couldn’t enjoy side 2 particularly because I’d play Side 1 as warmup for a riotous Friday or Saturday night. GLASS did wonders for opinion of LOW. I suggest always that when every BEATles and Stones fan is dead the culture will still regard LOW Symphony and therefore BOWIE. BOWIE will be known in 22nd century because of GLASS’s LOW, HEROES LODGER symphonies. I lost regard for the BEATles and the STONES after repeated listening of GLASS’s interpretation of BOWIE’s music. Publicity machine can’t help those two bands in the next century.
@Remimi2017 If it wasn't TMWSTH I might agree...there's no space for opinion in that masterpiece. IMO Aladidn Sane is one of my least faves but I am aware people rate it highly. TMWSTW is perfection..
1... David Live 2....Diamond Dogs 3....David Bowie, 1969 4....Low 5....Man Who Sold the world......... .....but I might switch the top two because I love Diamond Dogs so much.
One of the most interesting and meticulously scientific ways to arrive at a final result. Great to find someone I agree with on the top 4, though the order is slightly different. Maybe I could say that my top choice evens out the results of your tie. 1. Hunky Dory 2. Ziggy Stardust 3. Aladdin Sane 4. Station to Station
I simply couln't agree less with the ranking... especially on low ranked albums like Ouside, Heathen, Low or Hours... or even Let's dance & Blackstar which is consists of nothing less than epic tracks... but i appreciate the effort in making a video like this. I assume you are a member of the earlier generation of Bowie fans. Hence your top 3 picks are from 50 years ago. Cheers.
I've never understood why people like Hunky Dory so much. To me it should be nearer the bottom. Granted, Life on Mars, Queen Bitch and Changes are Fantastic, but Kooks belongs with Uncle Arthur and the rest sound like Space Oddity outtakes. To me this is the musical equivelent of The Emperor's New Clothes.
Woah. Diamond dogs so low??? Blasphemy. Diamond Dogs wavers back and forth as my favorite Bowie album battling it out with Alladin Sane which is also my favorite Bowie song. It's all relative because we all appreciate Bowie from different periods. But it's safe to agree that Tonight and Never let me down are the worst.
Finally someone who likes Lodger! I think it is very great and diverse, and fits a circle the end with the start. But I respect people who doesn't think "geniously" as a transitional style.
I sincerely wonder why you left out the Tin Machine albums. Sure, they were called albums by "a band" back in the day (as a promo claim), but no doubt are they real Bowie albums like these 25 others. That "I am just part of a band now" thing is/was obviously just one of Bowie's many roles and guises, so leaving them out of any serious studio albums overview is just silly. Anyway, while Tin Machine II surely competes with anyone's choice for the bottom end of the ranking, the first Tin Machine album is actually really cool. Sure, Bowie made lots of much better albums, but it's definitely better than a few in his catalogue.
Never Let Me Down is underrated. I’ve been listening to it all week. Maybe I like it so much because I grew up in the 80s. I like all those rock songs at the end that you don’t
colemann76 that’s probably the only Bowie album I find almost impossible to listen to. Time Will Crawl is okay, and the title track. The rest is cringe. It’s his worst record in my eyes. I do find it cool that you like it though. Cheers
Completely disagree about the ranking of Bowie’s nineties and eighties lps. They don’t deserve such a high ranking. On the other hand ‘Berlin’ trilogy lps would have deserved a better consideration. Aladdin sane at the third place is also disputable. To me: ziggy/hunky/low are top Bowie albums. Heroes/scary/station are close second. Diamond/Aladdin are a bit a moreofthesame of Bowie ziggy-era: some immortal song but the albums are average considering it’s Bowie (not Bolan). Next day/Blackstar are tremendous albums but also painful ones given that are premonition of what Bowie could’ve done….
I agree with much of your ratings having followed his career the whole way. However you did Low and Heroes a great injustice by rating them so low. I was happy to see you gave Black Tie White Noise its due however,
Great video. Overall I think your system did a pretty good job of placing the bulk of albums in more or less the right place. Two objections however. 1. Low is too low. I feel you were a little tough in Side 2. 2. Reality....in my opinion a universally underrated album.
It’s all subjective, but I can’t really argue with your list because, well, it’s your list. ;-) My top four are identical to yours. But Blackstar would be fifth, and The Next Day would be sixth (I can’t believe you have TND ranked so low). And while you rank Station to Station high, it’s ironic that you rank the song Stay so low. I think that’s the best song on the album. Reality is better than Outside. And Low is better than Heroes. His 80s output is certainly his low point, but you can’t possibly rank Never Let Me down higher than Let’s Dance. I mean, I don’t particularly care for Let’s Dance, but the three hits are decent songs. And Never Let Me Down has virtually nothing worthwhile. But, all in all, not a bad list. Cheers.
Great list, tongue in cheek but heartfelt. Outside had some of the best songs on it but that stupid story line hurt it. Like you said, scaffolding. Thanx for your ranking.
1... David Live ...don’t care that it’s not a studio album, it’s Bowie at the absolute height of his game. mid chronic cocaine addiction, absolutely flying. The Man Who Fell to Earth era. Brilliant 2....Diamond Dogs....despite Rebel Rebel, this is still magnificent 3....David Bowie, 1969 ....brilliant folky songs 4....Low......still sounds new to me ( Heroes was all the tracks not good enough for Low, in my opinion, though Heroes was a great song) 5....Man Who Sold the world.........I love those long songs .....but I might switch the top two because I love Diamond Dogs so much. When I think of what I’ve left out it just shows how good he was up until 1978, infact it started to fall apart after he was cured of addiction. Let’s Dance, China Girls, Absolute Beginners, Ashes to Ashes not for me....who cares though,, there’s another six brilliant albums up to ‘78.
I love your ranking. Specially the low place for low.😊. I really enjoyed listening to your opinions I am impress with what you told about teenage. Yes, I felt touched with that great truth about personalities. Alter egoes. It matchs with me. Only one disagree. You pointed "soul love" with only 7.5 !!! Thx for all.
@@austinheinbuch8642 my mind changed, it’s now ziggy. Specifically cause of the strings on rock n roll suicide. I still say from an objective perspective, low is best.
I give the song Life on Mars 11 out of 10, but then it is my my all time favourite. For me it was all down hill after Scary Monsters, and all the later albums were just too weak. Strangers When We Meet was the anomaly being absolutely brilliant, and Where Are We Now was the best last song for me. I would rate the LP Young Americans far higher than you, above Station taking the albums as whole works. Very interesting any way.
All downhill after Scary Monsters? Far from it. Heathen, Hours, Blackstar all brilliant albums, plus more. I'm guessing that you're not 'totally' familiar with all of the albums after Scary Monsters (and I do mean totally familiar to be in a position to judge). I feel the same about Life On Mars, probably my favorite song of all time. I highly recommend giving any of the 3 albums above at least 10 plays.
Yknow it’s nice to hear somebody not say that Lodger is the weakest link in the Berlin trilogy - like - I consistently enjoy Lodger much more than Heroes - although Low is def my favorite.
Why do you score under Ambient and Progressive Electronica songs? Those songs have a super ambitious structure and composition! My God, what little idea of music do you have?
I know there's no right or wrong when it comes to opinions, but I can't disagree more with you when you say that "Hours..." features his worst cover art
By admitting that you left Bowie and then came back, as I did, numbers or not, you bias your ranking based on what you loved when you were a core fan. I would have agreed at one point but now think that some songs like Heart's Filthy Lessons and Blackstar are some of his best.
