BOWIE COVERS ELVIS ~ LIVE 2002

David ended the Area 2 tour on 16th August 2002 in Seattle at The Gorge. David was in high spirits, chatting between songs, and generally enjoying a bit of silliness at every given opportunity.He started the encore with two of Elvis Presley's earlier recordings on what was the 25th anniversary of The King's death. Starting with 'I Feel So Bad', which, despite being a top 5 UK hit in 1961, is not the best known of Elvis's recordings, unlike the next song David sang, 'One Night', (possibly better remembered by many as 'One Night With You') which was a number one hit round the world early in 1959.

David had a nearly supernatural ability to mimic voices. I've heard sing part of a song and ask the people around him (he was making a movie at the time) "Who am I now?" He did Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townsend, Mick Jagger, Jerry Lee Lewis, Richard Roundtree, Prince, Mick Jagger and many others. It was a 'Wow! OMG!" moment for everyone there. Plus David had a photographic memory for anything he had read, and he had read A LOT! Reading was a way to clear his head and relax from tension. He tried to hide how brilliant he actually was.

"something that always annoy me is that we we're born on the same day..so he gets all the Birthday shit". To be honest I think that you're glad about this stuff David. And, being the Elvis fan you've always been, including to your own fantastical career, I hope we can all settle to the argument that both you and Elvis are greatly missed in the moderna era of music.

A lot of people nowadays just don't realise that if not for Elvis Presley, the music scene would have been totally different! He alone was such an influence to so many artists, that without him they wouldn't have been anything. And the list is endless. Elvis in his early days was mean, moody and raw! He wasn't dubbed the king for nothing. Everyone worshipped him ! And may I add! Not because of his later days, wearing those countless jumpsuits! Once he had done the now famous Eagle suit in the 1973 charity show in Hawaii , those jumpsuits should have gone! They have become a running joke with every wannabe Elvis impersonator out there! And I for one hate them! The Elvis Presley of the 50's to the 1968 special is the King.......Yes , I know he was still brilliant after that time , and he made some great records ,and done some great performances! But that rawness! That awesome magic was missing! He had been moulded into a celebrity instead of the inspiration to so many, that he was, just a few years before!
@keetonplace
@keetonplace 3 года назад
Agree on most everything you say. Wish the jumpsuits had gone after that Hawaii charity Special too. (Seen by one billion people worldwide via satellite.) Wish impersonator's never existed. Ugh. BUT, I saw him starting in '69 Vegas and my Gosh, never have I seen anything like that in my life. The charisma, aura surrounding him, gorgeousness of him and talent was almost more than I could take. And, on into the 70's, he was still awesome in Vegas and in my city. Sadly after Priscilla left, he went spiraling down. It wasn't just her, it was all he endured as the first major icon. I watched it all in Vegas, but was so mesmerized by the man, just didn't notice until hindsight set in.
@rmstitanic8163
@rmstitanic8163 3 года назад
@@keetonplace Yes , I have to say he still had what it took to be a cut above the rest at the time of 69 and even on to around 74/5 ish . Don't get me wrong, I loved him and his music until his far too early and always will. But I think he had lost his edge as he had just a few years before. He was only 42 at his time of death. That is still young. Unfortunately , he never had enough people around him that cared enough! Tom Parker was a carnival shark! He only had one thing that concerned him and that was money! Elvis could have been bigger than he was. If it is possible to be hailed bigger than a king. He had much more than just a fantastic singing voice. He could have become a great actor too, had he been given the chance by his horrible manager. He had been restricted from doing things that every other singer took for granted. Such as touring Europe . Parker kept Elvis on a leash and cared nothing for him. I don't know how you feel! But I hate the fact that since Elvis died , Priscilla has used his name constantly to keep herself in the limelight and obviously for money. She was part of the reason he spiralled into a bad place in the first place, because she left him. She acts like they were still married. They were not!

Wouldn't it have been great if Elvis had covered "Golden Years" ... which Bowie's publishing company had sent him for consideration in 1976. Elvis declined the offer ... probably because of Bowie's decadant repution at the time. Loads of fake "covers" on the internet claiming to be "Moody Blue Outtakes" etc ... but some are at least entertaining and worth a listen. Thanks for posting.

Nobody should even think of making comparisons - this was meant as a tribute. Personally I don't like the expression King I always associate that with our royal vampires who are descended from medieval gangsters. The mere fact that he's the only person who is known instantly just by his first name is good enough.

No where near the ability of Elvis to deliver this song. Bowie’s delivery lacks believability in the performance. Now listen to Elvis doing it. Same with One Night With You; I was reminded of Cliff Richard once saying that he sang gospel music and did Peace In The Valley until one day it suddenly dawned on him that he had been singing the words but it was devoid of the integrity and sincerity Elvis gave to his gospel music. I admired Cliff Richard’s honesty after that and he was exactly right. Bowie comes no where close to Elvis’s rendition of a song.
