The crucial bit to recognise is that it is essentially a partially complete overhand knot, followed by the left thumb flipping the top of that loop upwards to form a rabbit hole, while simultaneously flipping the working end upwards with the right thumb.

This is the way i have always done it it always made sense to me its easy and i beer climbing for 39 years and i can do it one hand with a little practice you can to just flip itover at the start and then flip it up and then push it through the hole next to the other rope end and boom done its really easy i learn to do it because sometimes you just dont have two hands the other is holding a limb lol so you might have to use your teeth to tighten it up on the running one
Thanks Patrick. I've got the right hand version down from your previous tutorial, but often struggle with the left hand. And it never occurred to me to practice it 'inverted'. (Correct word not found)
As a guy who is the son of a Navy man, and also a Navy man myself, (DD-214, 1993) who also went to college for Textile Science....I just gotta say....I am horrible with knots.....last ones Dad taught me, were in the early 80's.....Still, somehow, I've survived, Haha
Patrick can you do another video like this teaching the one that you always use with a bunch of half hitches going up the rope I would love to learn that one I always try to catch it on your videos but I can't seem to do it thank you God bless
You still have to do it yourself a few times for it to "click". It's interesting to me that the bowline is the one knot that confuses so many people (including me) at first
I was wondering if you still use the running bow for any applications. Since I learned the daisy chain from you I haven't found a reason to ever use the running bow again. Thanks -Anthony
I'm interested in this too. I don't climb but I use the running bowline to secure a line for the maasdam. Seems to work fine, but what are the benefits of the daisy chain for this type of application?
Two knots I personally never use nor would recommend even though they are the most popular and oft referenced knot in aborist work. The reason I don't use em? They are also the easiest knots to screw up and tie wrong. A figure 8 takes a fraction of the time to tie, and is 1000 times safer. Depends on the application but for a terminal tie in point a figure 8 is simple, easy to teach, easy to tie and almost impossible to screw up. Many a climber\arborist has been killed by a mistake when tying a bowline.
Nice video, but I learned that making a Bowline with the end of the rope stickig into the finished loop is unsafe. If the loop is moved around a lot, the part sticking out can get pushed back, resulting in a loose knot. This can even to to the extend that the loose part can be pushed out of the small loop wich secures the loose part, resulting in a complete failure of the knot. The loose part has to be outside of the finished loop, than this source of error can not occurr.
I see your concern tying safe knots but the way Patrick ties the Bowline (pronounced "Bow-Lynn") is actually correct. It's described in Ashley Book of Knots (ABOK #1010). You can also make a Yosemite tie off to secure the knot (see Animated Knots) but it's not really practical to use when working in trees. It's very important to dress the Yosemite tie off in the right order to avoid the knot to invert and become dangerous. In my humble opinion I find Pat's excellent daisy chain knot to be superior in treework, allthough I'm not an educated arborist. All the best.

Thanks for the video. In Czechia we teach this knot with a fairy tale: A princess (rope hanging from a rock or something) comes to a lake (the eye). A dragon (second end of rope) comes from lake, takes the princess and tries to pull her into the lake (rope goes around ,,the princess" and back into the eye). Then a prince (thats us pulling the rope) pulls the princess from the lake and saves her (the knot is finished). Personally, I think it's very cool and effective way to teach this knot 😁
