Flare is how much the oil rings are spread out on the cover of the ball due to core instability. In theory, if the ball flares more then more of the surface of the ball touches the lane so the ball will want to hook more
The drilled ball that you got the measurements from is a symmetrical ball. You said the magic number for max flare on symmetrical ball is 3 7/8. Anything closer to 0 or 6 will have less flare. The second number is 5. That ball isn’t going to generate as much flare, am I correct?
Yes, everything else I’ve heard agrees with what you said. If it’s below 3 3/8 it will flare less and want to roll earlier. If it’s above 3 3/8 it will flare less and want to roll later. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a layout go on the lower side but if you’re going for ultra smooth I guess that’s one way to do it
In simple terms: Dual angle is how you want the ball to react. VLS is more core positioning and positioning the core to fit what you want the ball to do. Lately, I’ve been having more success with the VLS Layout system rather than the Dual Angle System.

Hi, my speed is around 13 to 13.5 (reduced it drastically due to lumbar pain issues), rev around 200-225, PAP 5 & 7/8Up. I have quite high tracks...the tracks are very close to the thumb hole and sometimes even touch it too. 1) I want a very strong layout SKID-FLIP. Is 75-4-25 good? 2) For a very strong CONTINOUS layout is 65-3.5-25 good or should I increase the VAL angle to 35? Do let me know for any changes please as I have to drill 2 balls - one which is skid-flip and another continous and both are assymetric reactive. Want similar reaction as per the balls. Thanks
I think the 1st layout for the skid flip is great. When I’m looking for a strong, continuous layout, I usually do something like a 45x4 and 1/2x40. However, you did mention your slower speed, so I would maybe look at making that first number around 55. But that’s my opinion.
Im not sure if this is a stupid question or not, I am confused with the second to last part where you went down when your PAP is up. Do I have to go down since my PAP is 1 and a quarter inch up?
It depends on when you’re acquiring your PAP. If you’re finding your PAP on an already drilled ball, then you go up if your PAP is up. If your mapping your PAP on a ball that needs to be drilled, then you go down on an up PAP because you’re mapping it. That’s where you want your PAP. Does that answer your question?
@@Codyschmitt900 yeah that actually answered it because I'm wanting to get a pro sect I have a not drilled 900 global burner pearl and was wondering when laying it out for it to be drilled if I needed to do go down since my PAP is 5 and 3/8 over by 1 and 1/4 up, im not sure how to explain it lol
Yeah so when you lay it out, if you’re using the dual angle method, you’ll do angle, length, angle. Then, once you have your PAP, you’ll have to map it. So since it’s up, you’ll go down 1 and 1/4th. Then you’ll go over 5 and 3/8ths, and that will be your center of grip.
I have one stupid question that no one seems to want to answer. Would a bowler's PAP always stay the same or would it depend on how the ball is drilled? My PAP seems to be 4 5/16 over by 1 9/16 up but if I had my ball plugged and redrilled, would the PAP change with a stronger layout?
It can make a difference. I haven’t tracked the exact numbers about how much mine moves, maybe I’ll do a video on it if there’s enough interest, but, I know if my pin is over my middle finger or even left of my middle finger, the ball will probably track over my thumb. If my pin is above or even right of my ring finger, the ball will track more and more away from my thumb.
When in doubt, I recommend using a non-flaring spare ball to find your initial PAP. The layout and core dynamics should not affect the PAP measurement, but if you are lofting a high flaring ball, you might see some minor variation in the measurements due to axis migration that occurs before the ball touches the lane.
