In this episode of The Wild Report, I will be bringing you up close and personal with an Eastern box turtle, one of the most adorable but vulnerable animals in the US!

If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals, and especially snakes, can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I am confident in my abilities because I have years of zoology experience under my belt. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!

Hey there everybody, Ben here! Thanks a ton for watching that video, I really hope that you enjoyed. I am actually sitting in a Florida hotel room typing this comment right now, and will be knee deep in swamp water for the rest of the day, so I will apologize in advance if I take longer than usual to reply to comments. Also, I recently found out that I have received a full ride scholarship to study conservation biology at my top college, so have been quite busy attending to the various responsibilities that entails. With that being said, you can expect an AWESOME video coming to you on the morning of Saturday, March 17th. (P.S It will be filmed in full 4k quality!) -Ben Zino

When I was a kid, back in West Virginia, I grew up with a Box Turtle in my yard. I would pick him up and play with him from time to time. He spent his winter down deep under the rosa's. I would watch for him in the spring. He loved tomatoes. I loved my little friend

Used to find many in the suburban subdivision I used to live. We found 3 or 4 babies when I was a child. Last summer I found 3 in the same month in August, all within a couple hundred yard range. One was a smaller mature mature female, then there was a juvenile female and a juvenile male. All very healthy and vibrant. Sadly, the small patch of woodland that I used to walk daily for 20 years was ripped up and destroyed the following fall. The county needed to maintenance on a lot of underground water lines that passed through the forest, so now it's all gone. I used to see great blue herons, foxes, beavers, muskrats, deer, red tailed hawks, geese, woodland mallards, box turtles, occasional common snapping turtle, cooter turtles, other basking turtles, bullfrogs, raccoons and all sorts of other things there despite the woodland being surrounded on all sides by subdivisions. All gone now. I live somewhere more rural and remote, but haven't seen a fraction of the wildlife I used to see there. It feels like a part of me was taken when they tore all those trees down and will never return.

That is so sad, and unfortunately a far too common fate for habitat patches on the landscape. Hopefully I will be able to use my career to fight for the preservation of those small but valuable natural areas.

I got a box turtle off a busy road yesterday (he was literally going to be hit by my car if I didn’t stop). I took him to Turkey Creek Sanctuary near my house in Palm Bay, Florida. A volunteer told me to place him in the area where the tortoises make their homes. He said that they would get along and also that there would surely be other box turtles living there. He was gorgeous, and I hope he does well in his new habitat. He just wasn’t safe where he was roaming. Busy streets all over. Do you think he will survive living in a protected place with other turtles and tortoises? He has lots of brush, a large creek nearby, sandy soil, and plenty of open grass and other low vegetation and insects to munch on.

Eastern box turtles DO swim, and do not sink like a rock. They love swimming and younger turtles spend more time around and in water than older ones, and they are pretty good swimmers, and have webbed toes. However, if you release one, it would prefer the forest floor over water.

Very cool. My parents have lived in the same house, for over 50 years. There is a small "patch" of woods behind it....maybe 5 acres, as a kid I used to find Box turtles in there. I recently visited my parents and, decided to take a walk back there, I hadn't been back there in almost 30 years. Just a short distance into the woods, I found one, right where I used to find them as a kid....I had to smile. They can live up to 100 years, and usually spend their entire lives, within just a few acres....it might not have been the first time I found that turtle...if ya think about it! Peace ✌

Here in southern Maryland we always see box turtles in our yard during the warm months. We watched one lay eggs in the ground and cover them up. Didn't see them hatch out, unfortunately, but later saw a hole where the eggs were. Sometimes they'll be out in the road drying their shells off the next day after a heavy night rain. I've rescued at least one off the road that was in danger of being hit.

Daughter found an injured box turtle about a month ago. She looks like something tried to eat it. The left eye is missing and has a crack in her shell. She took it somewhere and was told that the eye was infected. I tried to bring it back to health by giving it some penicillen. It wasn't able to open it's mouth. After a week with medicine, it was able to eat the grounded up bugs/worms that I made mush out of. the next week, she was eating lettuce, carrots and some fruits. Hopefully she will be able to eat live worms and more soon. I got her to my home and she now has a great home that PetSmart and another turtle owner helped me set up. I am afraid that she will never be able to be returned to the wild, but I take her outside everyday so that she can feel the grass and wind. Love my new pet.

Growing up in Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay in the 1960's there were so many box turtles every year. But I soon noticed near the late 1970's to early 80's there was just not as many as there used to be. I often wondered if those huge mosquito spraying trucks that would come around back then was killing them off. As a kid I loved seeing them walking around the yard and would always put out vegetables out for them from our garden. It is a shame they are getting low in numbers.

3 different chelonians exist. turtles live in the sea. Turtles only live on land. The terrapin is the 3rd of the chelonia and they live in streams and lakes and comes out on land also.

Box turtles live in swamps. Yes they handle water really well. They also are very omnivirous. They eat alot of worms and little amphibians and insects through out there lives.

I have a box turtle in my neighborhood. It frequents a drain that collects water and it baths in the hole in the asphalt next to the drain. I move it when I find it because I fear it will get hit as it's on a corner and in the road. I have asked a local wild life sanctuary if I should put up a sign so people know that it is around, like a turtle crossing sign. It's a really beautiful bright turtle, the one if your video is dull compared to this one. Wish I could send a photo. Thanks for the video and education.

Years ago I used to see box turtles everywhere in the summer here in Oklahoma . But now I see just one or two in the summer. I’ve heard the fire ants are to blame some say it’s from all the spraying farmers do. It’s a crying shame.
@TheWildReportOfficial
@TheWildReportOfficial 5 лет назад
That's very sad to hear, fire ants and intensive agriculture are definitely contributing to population decline. I am actually working on a short documentary about box turtle conservation which will probably be finished in Spring 2020, and will be discussing reasons for their population decline extensively.

Move it off the road in the direction it was trying to cross and call your local wildlife rehabilitation facility to see if they have room for it.

Hi I Live In Grantville GA, South of Atlanta. I found a box Turtle in the woods stuck in a bucket of water that also had oil in it. Not sure how long she was there but she has a pretty good oil stain on her shell, There was also six eggs in the bucket sunk to the bottom. It was very cold and still is around 40 degrees or lower. I can get her to eat meal worms but no interest in greens or anything else not live. Im scared to put her back out because its so cold. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL AND APPRECIATED!! Thank you so much!!!

It is probably in whatever wooded area it could find near your house, and they eat a varied diet mostly consisting of native vegetation and insects.

Found one of these in my yard yesterday. It didn't have red in its eyes so must have been female. So cute. I wanted to feed the turtle something, so I went and got some grape tomatoes out of the fridge. I used a shis-ke-bob stick to extend small pieces of the tomatoes to her. At first she retracted everything, head and feet, into her shell, thinking that I was attacking. But then she realized that what I was jamming into her face was something to eat. ...She GOBBLED the hell out of those tomatoes. I didn't have enough, so I went back for more. Then I realized that I had some ripe tomatilloes on a dying plant. Bout 5 of them. She gobbled those. Then I went back for something more. When I came back, I couldn't find her anymore.

Wow, that's really cool! I only know about Eastern box turtles here in America, so it's certainly possible that other species may be better suited to underwater life.

Just saved one from a highway on ramp today up here in PA had to move him from where he was found because the only thing close was highway, not sure if we should put her in a safer forest area, make an enclosure in our yard or keep her inside. We're keeping her in our tub overnight to make sure she's ok then tomorrow probably back outside although she does seem to crawl toward people rather than away and the area we found her makes me think she may be an abandoned pet... (They are found wild and sold in pet stores here)
@TheWildReportOfficial
@TheWildReportOfficial 6 лет назад
Thank you so much for saving the turtle. I think putting it in a wooded habitat is the best thing you can do. Even if she is an abandoned pet, she should be able to forage for food outdoors. If you have any problem with her let me know and I'll try to help!

I noticed that this video is 4 years old. Two things that I would like to point out to you... First, eastern box turtles can not always be sexed by eye color as there are cases of females having red eyes. (I thought that was pretty interesting) and secondly, box turtles CAN in fact swim! Blew my mind first time I saw it. Anyway, good video and hope found my observations interesting /helpful. ✌️🐢♥️
