Classic game from the Boxer Era when he was in top shape, pure micro victory.
I have to say a couple of things about the commentator in this VOD [pG]Korn, an ex-PG member and a very skilled player so I have respect for him, I watched a few VODs with his cast and most of the times he's very good, but in this specific VOD he's quite annoying! obviously cheering for Blackman and talks says some ridiculous things like 'Boxer can hear the Korean commentator and play accordinly' - when in actuality those glass gamer boxes they play in, are infact sound-proof, not to mention the huge earphones.
Though at some point even the commentator gives up protecting Blackman since Boxer's micro catches him a bit by surprise, very funny to hear his shocked comments.
Well worth watching start to finish.

This was the first ever English commentary I saw of a Starcraft game. It is still the only commentary I have seen by [pG]Korn and one of the only Blackman games. I would love it if anyone knows if there is more of either of them out there.

16:30 본진에 드랍쉽 한기분량 병력으로 히드라 궤멸.. 동시에 베슬로 앞마당 일꾼 전부 죽이고 3시 멀티도 동시공격 2002년... 다른나라는 거의 한국보다 컨트롤이나 전술전략면에서 2년정도 뒤쳐졌었지. 전략부분은 2010년대까지도.. 위 영상은.. 블랙맨을 아주 농락하네.. 주전력은 본진에 방어시키고 드랍쉽으로 깨작깨가 떨구면서 컨트롤 쇼맨쉽. 후반엔 테란은 이미 보병 공3업 된 상태인데 저그는 울트라방업도 안된상태.. 멀티 숫자도 테란이 두배 이미 GG

I miss Boxer. back when I play brood war daily all anyone talked about was Boxer and how much he owned. this is the first time ive ever seen any of his videos tho. he has the best M&M uber micro ive ever seen. damn!

Poszukaj wywiadów z nim. Gra z kompem i zegarkiem (bo nie miał chyba nawet stopera). Obliczanie timingów i doprowadzanie ich do perfekcji. Kafejki komputerowe. Tylko w tych kafejkach trudno raczej było spotkać kogoś "równego" ;]

But it slows down the creation of lurkers and hydralisks a lot. ALSO the terran will send enough reinforcements. Even with one CC without expand he can send like 12 marines + 4 medics capable of holding off lurkers and mutualisks and zerglins if he send 1-2 firebats in the bunker. Also he can make turrets near the bunker for scanner + AA and in the main base to defend from both again ;). Zerg hardly will have the time needed to get enough larvas for gathering and buildings.

Dude I am talking about Bunker Rush! IT has nothing to do with the time needed to build guardians lmao. By that time the terran can make invisible wraits/SV/vaklyries also the zerg will have 1 max 2 hatcheyes if the bunker rush is succeeded in the first expansion. Also you will need a lot of time to make the second hatchery(which will be second expansion) and the terran can send scv/marine to discover it. Even if not still you will have only 1 main base with low units/resources. T can get 2 base

But what about the bunker rush. Even if zerg has perfect micro how can he compensate the 60 hp of scv + the bunker creation and the marines. Also the zerg don't have enough larvas at all! I call this a little advantage for terran. Boxer proves it. He failed sometimes like other pro terran players but it is about right timing+map+distance+micro.

LMAO indeed it is. For this time I've could make 3 bunker rushes for practice agains zerg and crush it to shit. I preffer terran more than the other races a lot :) =). But I suck with low APM, but still managed to kill some toss with vultures+tanks. Greatest combo for aggressive assault!

No they don't. The building are great for defence and even offence sometimes like the bunker. Fastest and fully recovering of HP. I think their best advantage is the speed of firing. I mean they always shoot the last moment. No delay time =) :).

Boxer had great micro but still I think he could perform better. Also for 2 CC's didn't he had too small amount of marines and tanks for around 20 minutes playing? Like on purpose he wanted to have little amount but fully upgraded. Don't know.

this stupid commentator... he doesn't even know that Boxer lost a bunch of marines to lurkers at 22:45, because he already won the game, and intended to show Blackman he had more than enough army to win still. Listen to what the commentator has to say "the first time Boxer lost marines to lurkers", DUH.... speaks as if we had been sleeping.

no the commentator was actually very knowledgeable. but i guess he was quirky in some ways such as the boxer can hear...stuff comment. but he really got a lot of the stuff right. he though it was scouting because usu. zergs use 9th drone to scout, not expo, but blackman expoed... and it was really gg when boxer dropped. blackman was in a horrible condition.

ahahah the commentator is funny. when boxer has 4 bases... well i expect to see a big army in boxer's base... boxer's base is blank, barely any units besides scv... and then he doesnt say anything. thats kinda funny, cuz boxer didnt reall macro in this game at all... just like boxer would do...

And yes, both him and the crowd are biased. Very biased. And did it say that blackman practices against an "AI boxer"? ...roflmao? "and I think boxer is getting a dwwwopship? yesss" "Boxer's micro against lurkers is pretty amazing" (yeah, I agree) "the audience is really annoying me, they should just shut up... because if i was a player... i'd get really annoyed" (rofl, the whole point of the glass boxes and huge ass earphones is so that you can't get distracted)

rofl, I love the expression on both players faces as they wait for the commentators to finish... meanwhile the english commentator is just trying to find things to say. The english commentator doesn't seem to be doing a good job. I'm sure it's difficult to try to 'predict' the players actions... but after getting so many false assumptions... but then again there's probably not much to say at the early point of the game. Funny how the eng commentator explains WHY blackman does what he does.

Looks like SC evolved quite a lot, see how their macro is poor (boxer taking expand pretty late, he could take it earlier), they are playing defensively (boxer putting siege tanks and bunker everywhere in his bases, even if the fight is in the zerg base). But Blackman was very bad, both on his macro and his shitty micro. Imo, a strong rape, blackman just kept delaying the end of the game, but he didn't stand a chance.

@Krokosmil I will have to disagree here. I don't know much about pro play, but the commentator clearly underestimates Boxer on multiple accounts, showing clear bias, and giving inaccurate battle analysis. Things like "only 5 tanks" show that the commentator lacks knowledge regarding the game. And I don't know what you mean about "husky american football bullshit". The vast majority of the commentaries are in Korean, and this is the only commentary of Starcraft in English I've seen. GG though.

No, Boxer can't hear the commentators because they sit in sound proof rooms. Not to mention that when focusing one a specific sound intensely i.e. Starcraft then your brain blocks out most other sounds. Like when you say to someone 'Sorry, What did you say? I was miles away'. So even if he could hear them which he can't then I don't think he would be listening. Good players in all games know these things through experience and skill. Same principle as Quake players getting wall hack accusations.

The commentator actually knows something about starcraft pro play and can see (as I can) that boxer is making some extremely lucky scouts. Thus considering the possibility of foul play. He's routing for the underdog and anyone wanting a GG would. So all you nublets might want to stfu and enjoy a professional commentary instead of some husky/hdsc american football bullshit. Good game btw and props for training vs self programmed AI Blackman (strange nick for a white dude).

Why should I be correct in everything I'm writting here, I am just pointing-out that you are making some crittics on a good post about a guy whose maybe the first one who made commentary of Starcraft AND posted it on youtube.. Saying how fucking unexperienced he is. Make a comment.. Show your skill and then maybe, just maybe I will take you serious.

Another thing VioleTAK... there is something called comsat... Neither players can hear anything outside of their game (they have headsets + they are in proofed rooms.) It's petty to say that one of the players are cheating just because you are unaware of some functions of the game. If you're going to be a commentator for match ups, you should really stop being biased... Maybe boxer just happens to be better than Blackman...

14:30 theres nothing of "back in the game" there. Boxer just wants to let him alive to make the match at least a little bit entertaining - thats his goal as a pro. However, this match is just way too one-sided. Blackman doesnt even have any specific strategy, he just plays like vs regular AI, no initiative, no invention, no threat, doesnt even know that just defending never wins - imo Boxer wouldnt lose even if he deliberately tried to.

i agree with what you say about the commentator, he did bring up some good (if rudimentary) strategy points which i found interesting but he clearly wasnt ready for the experience of watching a game in korea. why would the audience be there if they werent going to cheer and pick a favorite player and what a surprise that its someone of their own race. Ever watched the Olympics buddy?

I agree, this commentator is bad... it was a 9 hatch, he underestimated boxer's control, kept on commenting about the crowd that they were annoying and they should shut up... deal with it, plus theres no way that the commentators could be heard by either blackman or boxer, boxer just assumed that he expanded to the island, or scanned it maybe I'm just used to better commentators, but I still think that this one is bad

in the mean time with the bunker rush failed. the zerg has 3 hatcheries. den=40secs. then 28 seconds to build 9! hydralisks. or the zerg could just spam zerglings. 28 seconds for 18! zerglings and while the terran is teching up to whatever/expanding, those zerglings will destroy if not fatally wound the terran. while the terran is getting owned, the zerg could make a 4th hatchery and because zerglings are so cheap, continue spamming zerglings.

1 engineering bay takes 60secs. then a turret is 30secs. then to get anti-air ,you need factory of 80 seconds. then a starport of 70 seconds. then 60secs per Wraith. Wraith=210 seconds. 40 secs for control tower. 80 seconds for armory. 60secs for valk to be built. Valkyrie=390 secs. 80 secs for science facility. 80secs for vessel. Science Vessel=370secs. Don't forget supply depots and the vast resourses to make all of these

1 marine takes 24 secs just to build. whereas a zergling takes 28 secs and the zerg by this time should have a expansion so they can have up to 6 larva. 28 seconds for 12 zerglings compared to 1 marine :) a M&M squad of 12 marines+4 medics takes 408 seconds+80secs for academy+40secs for the supply depot for the squad. 528secs right there. in the mean time, the zerg couldve built 4 extra hatcheries in that time (though they wouldnt so they would have extra time.)

bunker takes 30 seconds to build. in which time the drones can kill the SCV. althought the SCV has 60 hp compared to the 40 of a drone. a drone has a ranged attack so theoretically, up to 10 drones can attack a SCV at once. 10*5 of drone attack=50 damage right there. there is a pause of 2 seconds per drone fire. so if zerg responds fast enough the bunker will be 16% completed. Academy takes 80 secs.+1 firebat is 24 secs.+ the time it needs to get to the bunker which is about 16 sec. 2 mins total

This game is totally balanced it was totally balanced then and it still is today. Pro's come up with brand new stratergies all the time which may seem like they've managed to make something unfair, this is not true and it just seems this way because people don't know the counter for it at that time...i do wounder how a guy who didn't even have internet think he would ever have a chance against BoxeR who at this stage of SC was the best ever player.

as much as i like to see a white guy play at that level, his skill just wasn't on par and he realizes this. he didn't pressure boxer at all and all of his lurker drops totally failed. his island exp got shut down like 3 times and there wasn't even any scourges to kill the vessals and boxer left them there for like 10seconds at his ramp. at the start he didnt get a 3rd hatch either. another thing about the korean commentators, i dont think boxer can hear them.

this was a joke Blackman was no match at all. boxer could've ended the game when he had just 3 marines and i'm very sure he didn't do it on purpose. he made fun of Blackman with his micro. commentators completely clueless about starcraft i bet they have never actually played it themselves. they're also clueless about the tournament rules. then what the hell could be the requirements for that job? do they just go hire random people off the streets?

This commentator is soooo annoying. He keeps saying it's gg for Blackman and two minutes later he says that Blackman is back in the game. Also, he keeps saying that Boxer can probably hear the commentators, when we all know that Boxer doesn't need that kind of an unfair advantage to win. :) All in all, it's a nice game to watch, but I'd rather have the Korean commentators, even though I don't understand a word they say. :)

1-st of all Blackman has all mu respect and he is, in my view the real, and only winner of the match. He played vs the favorite contestant, in a foreign country, surrounded by HIS fans, while the game was beeing commentated upon by HIS countrymen, who were SHAMELESSLY HELPING HIM AND OFFERING HIM CLUES ABOUT BLACKMANS EVERY MOVE (the comentator himself mentions this in a game which is supposed to be impartial but is NOTHING OF THAT SORT).

Now, it's true that the commentator is saying somewhat abrasive things occasionally. But you have to understand, Boxer's patrols on those island expansions were maintaining some Godly level of success. It does indeed look a little like Boxer knows everything on the map. Also, at the beginning, he's right to be annoyed with the crowd too. Even though the players can't hear the crowd, it's pretty biased against anyone whose not Korean.

Micromanagement is skillfully controlling many units on one screen, like in the middle of a battle. So, if there were two dragoons versus two seige tanks (in tank mode), the drags would normally win. Boxer has a trick involving jumping to and from a dropship, which is a Micro mngmt. solution to that. The opposite is Macromanagement, which is efficiently keeping track of all your bases and outposts, tech, etc.

All i could think throughout the game was "Oh my god if thats what all germans speaking english sounds like i should excuse every time i speak english." At least i know some People without that annoying accent. Btw. it's not that hard to change the AIs build order. All the hard work has been done by the Broodwar AI Projekt. It's just writing a few a lines. And just to repeat: - Of course the boxes are sound proof. - Boxer doesn't need any help to obliterate that guy.

hotjamz5 (even considering it is too late answer), Zerg must and can easily expand. Becouse Hatchery already gives him a good "factory" for producing defence (and offensive troops too). And even more - its the only way for Zerg to produce forces (surprised if told something really smart x) ). So you just "take average risk" with separated positions of hatcheries and get not only "factories" but the expansions as well.

I don't see why you're all giving the commentator such a hard time. If you've ever played Starcraft, you'd know that most of his assumptions would go as he said, if these weren't two of the best players in the world. Blackman comes back to fend off Boxer amazingly more than once, and normally lurkers destroy marines, except Boxer has probably THE best marine micro-management skills of any SC player. Great game by both players.

iirc boxer sometimes relies on the audience's reactions, but i don't think he hears the commentators. either way blackman didn't have a chance. he plays like he plays against computers. which might work against nada since nada's just down right mechanical, but boxer's all about mind games and harrassment.

Yeah but not perfect. I can use defilers to either plague bunkers or use dark swarm and then melee attack the bunkers. I can broodling tanks with my queens. I can plague a bunch of marines and then broodling one of them and have the broodlings tear through several of the marines. Every unit in starcraft regardless of race has a counter in each of the races. It's balanced.

The reason there is such a big difference in level of gaming between korean and non-korean progamers is that in Korea, first of all it's so much easier to play alot of highlevel games when you're starting to play, at internet cafes or whatever. Also, the knowledge about the game is much higher all in all.

The commentator sounds like a D/D+ iccup dummie. WCG, MSL, all big time SC and gaming tournaments use sound proof rooms for the players. In fact, at 15:29-1532 you can even see the players in their respective rooms. His comments are just plain annoying, the video quality improves by simply clicking the mute button.

well unfortunately this video is pretty rare and the commentator is awfull and when i mean awfull i mean it would have been better if i hear wake me up before u go go by goerge michel which is not a very apropriate sont than his comments he is talking 1- in bad accent 2- irreleveny stuff and repeats itself really bad!!!!

Aaaand the overlord will die. I don't see what so special about that move. It's quite common. What the fuck? Losing an overlord in the beginning sets you back so far because you cannot make any more drones and you have to waste 100 more minerals and wait for it to finish before continuing producing lings and drones. This commentator knows shit. Boxer ftw.

dude he said it's already happened in a Counter Strike tournament, where the announcer's voice could be overheard by the players... Which resulted in a rematch. anyway I thought the commentator was good, he was really knowledgable about the game, enough to give people an idea what's going on, and what will likely happen before the attacks and defensive counters even begin...

Well, to be fair, this was five years ago, so the protocols of professional starcraft play were perhaps not as widely known at the time. There was also, as he noted, an incident in a counterstrike tournament around that time where the players *could* hear the commentators, so it could have been a justifiable concern.

Everyone there expected, wanted and NEEDED boxer to win. And they MADE SURE HE DID. lest the "emperor" be dethroned. The fans cheered for Boxer and distracted the player from a civilized match, the comentator gave him clues about blackmans base and plan of attack, all the while the poor guy didn't even know their language.

This commentator was quite annoying. Of course they cannot hear the commentators. They give so much information about spawning points, positioning, etc. The players are wearing headphones dude. I have props for VioleTAK and his contribution of brood war videos but damn dude, lousy commentation.

I wonder how many people have no idea that the commentator ([pG]Korn) was one of the founders, and is the only one remaining of the initial crew, of a big online poker school. He's a millionaire today and probably wouldn't give a flying fuck about what you think of his accent. :P

Meh, but this is Boxer. A fight isn't good enough because Boxer pulls out of the battle with practically his entire army still intact. It took a FAR heftier cost of lurkers to kill a small platoon of marines that would in most normal circumstances have been ripped to shreds by the first wave.

I remember Klazart telling us that we don't have e-sports in american because we never had any player as entertaining as Boxer. Actually, no. It's because at the begining of SC, we had only this crappy commentator :p Long life to new commentators on VioletAK. Keep up the good work :p

I don't think the commentator is that biased, I thought he was actually quite neutral. The "can he hear the commentators" was caused by Boxer finding his expansions very quickly, AND probably because (the commentator said it) there was a rematch at CS because the players could hear the commentators.

Whatever...the point is, bunker rush can still be stopped. And hatcheries cost 300 to the command center 400. And even if you haven't quite developed guardians yet, you can still destroy bunkers with zerglings, hydralisks, lurkers...any combination of the above.

uhh 1. i was not making fun of pro gamers if u were on that track 2. maybe its me or did i not write 40s and 50s i doubt foreign starcraft pro gamer will continue to make money in their 40s and 50s or later as i dun think coke cola will let them be in any of their commercials to get money.

For a guy who doesn't have an internet connection at home. Blackman did really good. But I have to say I lost a lot of respect for boxer after he had to take of his blindfold to beat a blind guy who was playing against him in starcraft, for fear of losing against a blind guy! Really.

What the commentator does not seem to understand is that Boxer is a Micro specialist and the small amount of units actually plays to his advantage because he doesn't use a lot of units. Also, the Terran has the advantage of having the base unit having a set damage with both and and ground attack.

yeah he acts like scouting an obvious expansion had to be cheating. There were some dramatic turnarounds in the game it did look like gg a few times, no? His lurker comments were funny when boxer lured them out and owned the zergs base hard and the commentator was clueless.

Wait, any pro korean gamer is better than Yellow or worse than Yellow? I don't know who the guy is, but according to the responses here, he's better than Blackman, who then in turn must suck hardcore or something. Am I misunderstanding the whole thing here, or am I close?

Hey, at least we get to hear it in English since the original commentary's Korean. At least we can hear and understand what's going on and the strategies behind the two players. It might not be the best translation but if you want that, then go get yourself a linguist.

game was sealed since the first drop.... just cuz back then ppl everyone macro a lot less than today thats y boxer didnt macro up another army of 50 marines to end the game quickly... does the commentator even know how to play??? like seriously??

well, back when reavers outranged tanks, and dropships were only one speed rank above overlords (without speed) and firebats lacked armor... Terran was weak. Boxer just made the weak ungodly. This is because Boxer is the WTFPWNZORAGE GOD OF STARCRAFT XD

Guardians? The air unit that outranges bunkers??? And zerg have enough larvas if you build enough hatcheries. Trust me, the bunker rush isn't infallible. It's only infallible through the skill of the player, but that's also true of zerg and protoss.

no actually irradiate doesnt affect burrowed units i thought i was super smart this one time by trying to use irradiate on a lurker didnt work out too well :( and yeah i guess in that case ive played the game a bit though im a pretty bad player xP

Blackman was pretty good. The only problem was that he faced one of the top pros in the contry that accounted for almost half of all Starcraft copies sold in the world. I mean. With that many people laying the ones who are good are REALLY good.

boxer joined the air force because of the mandatory military service that all koreans have to serve. hes probably returning very soon, since he went about 2 years ago.. he made a team so he still plays, but he sucks because he gets no practice...

God I hate lurkers. Microing them is difficult, they move slowly, burrow slowly, shoot slowly. Micro with marines is so easy, stim, focus fire and back away. In Brood War, lurkers were supposed to be the antidote for marines. They're NOT FUCKIN GOOD ENOUGH.

Boxer has been one of the best for more like 6 years He has not been considered the best player for the last couple of years though, but probably the funniest and most original. This game was from 2002 btw, and blackman pretty much is no more now.

I don't really make comments on videos. but dude.. this commentator was the worst commentator ever. Is he just that stupid or acting stupid. I guess he has no idea how great Boxer is. Especially in 2002, where Boxer was at his peak.

the commentator is HORRIBLE. when he said i dont see what boxer can do with a vessel and some marines vs 3 lurkers. doesn't he know who boxer is? he's the freaking lurker mutilator! if he can see lurker's he can take em out.
