Getting in some light work with Calvin as we shake off some ring rust. It feels good to get some practice in. Great work, Calvin!
Today’s focus was mainly defense and getting comfortable being hit. It’s never good to get hit but when a hit is earned yet never leaves last damage, that’s a good sparring. Since our difference in size is significant, it’s necessary to hold punches back. You don’t want to nuke your sparring partner, right?
Light sparring is necessary, especially between friends, as it helps both fighters actually learn and practice technique in a safer environment. No one should get injured or receive concussions from just practice. Especially since we’re not aspiring professional athletes and need to go back to our respective jobs.

This is good for getting comfortable in the ring and working on defense, I hate to walk into a gym full of guys that feel like they have something to prove

I definitely agree! I’ve been there, on both sides of that coin. It’s not worth it and it’s just practice. We try to focus on light shots to the head and hard shots to the body. Gotta protect the brain! But above all else, work on skills during sparring. All work is good work!

Me and a few people at my boxing gym don't compete. I have to tell my sparring partners who compete that I'm just doing this for self defense and don't plan on competing cause I'm in my 30s lol. But after that, they're really cool with that and work with me

Thank u for posting this. I'm in my 30s and I want to learn how to box for self defense. I don't plan on competing. I feel like light sparring is great for people sparring a little older and it's especially good for beginners. If I sparred with people who went all out, I would just get discouraged and probably wouldn't pick up gloves again lmao
@Cloudfencer

I completely agree with this. I try to only do light sparring since I’m not competing yet either. I do have plans to at least do a smoker. Every now and then during Open Sparring I do get those gung-ho young bucks that want to get into a war for the fun of it, and that’s when I start to step on the gas. But light, technical sparring is where it’s at in my book. I’m in my early 30s myself and work as an ICU nurse so I definitely don’t try to cause or receive much brain damage.

@Cloudfencer
@Cloudfencer Год назад
I agree with you. There’s levels to this game and everybody has different experiences. I work as an ICU nurse so I know what happens when I concuss someone and it’s not worth sparring with an ego. My sparring partners usually stick to technical sparring so we can actually learn something with our brain intact. The pros are going full speed for money, we’re not. But even if we go slow and light, it can still feel like a chess match too.

@@Cloudfencer yeah in kickboxing (or at least in my gym) we go pretty light and technical, some people go hard but it’s normally a mutual agreement. But we do but a little bit of steam in body shots. When people got competitions go a little harder but still kinda light but a lot of rounds.
@Cloudfencer
@Cloudfencer Год назад
@@theawesomest2850 Yeah, I’ve noticed in kickboxing/Muay Thai gyms they almost play-spar. Hard sparring with elbows and knees is much more dangerous if the two fighters are new. Light sparring is really something that more boxing gyms should adopt to enhance the longevity of their careers.
@theawesomest2850
@theawesomest2850 Год назад
@@Cloudfencer yeah that’s exactly what’s it’s like. Play spar with a bit more intensity. We use knees just not to the head and we only spar elbows with elbows pads and even when we do use elbow pads we spar much more slower and lighter because well there’s not a a lot of safe ways to elbow someone lol but boxing gyms should definitely adopt that. I feel like you learn more that way, when you go hard you kinda just resort to what you know opposed to trying and getting use to throwing new combos. Also they probably get a lot more people I wanted to join a boxing gym to get better at my kickboxing but I got a wife, family and job lol I can’t go in there with these guys trying to take my head off every week lol

@@Cloudfencer tell me about it ! Not going to lie it's hard to spar when I know people want to look good instead of working on being good and focusing on the end goal and actually bringing that fire when it really matters when you fight your opponent or compete. @Cloudfencer
@Cloudfencer 2 года назад
@@murderousintentful I completely agree with this. I’ve seen a lot of guys show up for sparring and their friend brings their nice cameras to make videos and show off. While it’s good to promote yourself, it’s disrespectful to try to do so without even getting consent from the sparring partners. I try to remember that sparring etiquette always applies whether it’s light or heavy: punch as hard as you want to be punched, bully back if they bully you. But always remember it’s not a fight, it’s training. Unless the guy wants a fight then game on 🤜🏽🤛🏽

Light sparring feels weird at first because you’re restraining your power. I’ve learned now to throw with 80% speed and minimal power. That way it gives me and my sparring partner the closest experience to an actual fight without going home injured.

Oh yeah, I could if i wanted to outbox him. It would be boring for both of us but it's doable. But I actually wanted him to hit my guard so I could get comfortable blocking and being hit. My other goal was to stay calm. So whatever he threw at me, I wanted to see everything and learn from it. There are moments where I'm able to evade his punches with ease because I'm out of his reach. It's light sparring anyway so I can easily tank through his punches.

@@TheJune301987 Honestly? I don’t know which one of us is better. What I do know is I have the longer reach and I’m the bigger guy. I might also be quicker with more fast twitch muscle fibers. But to be real, he was the first person I’ve EVER sparred against and I thought he was difficult. From then on it was always people better than me. I see myself as intermediate to expert with “Boxing workouts” but a beginner to sparring. I’ve been tricked into getting nuked during sparring sessions because I wasn’t anywhere near their level. He wanted to get in some light sparring and I needed to dial it back so this was actually just what we both needed.
