In this episode, a quick trip to the cabin to work on a Boxwood over a rock. A great little getaway and a tree set up for future wonder. Well, I hope so anyway.

Dave so glad to see that your building is working out and that there has been no floor settlement issues! -Scott

Cool root system. Nice light root pruning and repotting. Light pruning the tree for spring growth. Video. Superb!

It’s going to be awesome in 2 years time Dave. Nice work as always!

I forgot how large and round the rock is! I’m very interested to see what those exposed roots do while you wait patiently for those bottom rooms to recover. I’m diggin it, Dave.

WOW Dave, that is a great tree. I don't suppose that would ever end up in one of our auctions?

Looks really nice. Would it not be easier for the roots to cling the rock if they were tied together?

Most likely. Thought I’d try without to see.

LOVE the recap over the years!! I can see why you did it this way but what are your thoughts about using one of the smaller pots then add a plastic column (like a pot with no bottom) just slightly larger than the rock itself and fill that with the substrate (essentially two levels of pots). That way the roots won't flare away from the rock in the substrate but almost become pressed against it. I am not criticizing your way. I am new to bonsai and I am just wondering why my instincts were different from yours. Thanks in advance for your answer. You have been a tremendous resource to my bonsai journey.

Steve, excellent idea. I have seen a lot of people putting these trees/roots in taller pots for that same reason. I'm most worried about the smoothness of this rock, and if it doesn't stick at all in two years, I might find a better rock. By that time, the roots that I keep might be thick enough to place more over whatever rock. A deeper pot with a coarse substrate creates thicker roots. Perhaps it's not too late to do that before the roots set.

Oh, See! I learned something else from you about the coarse substrate and deeper = thicker roots. Is that because of more airflow to the roots?@@DavesBonsai
@DavesBonsai
@DavesBonsai 7 месяцев назад
@@stevetippin I believe the roots that trail down divide and keep moving on while the thicker substrate allows the roots to thicken more freely without a ton of additional ramification if you will.

Will those roots ever fuse over such a smooth rock?
@DavesBonsai
@DavesBonsai 7 месяцев назад
My biggest fear Matt. I've been stewing over that since I repotted it. Might make a change before the roots set

@@DavesBonsai You might end up with an interesting, raised and shaped root structure without the rock. Root-over-space-where-the-rock-used-to-be. That could work really well.

Do you think that stainless steel screws would be better for the wooden box? That way no rust for tetanus if you get cut and then you can reuse the screws. Just a thought.

High Dave. I have a few boxwoods and yes they seem to grow very slowly, even here in sunny hot Australia. 👍🦘🇦🇺
