Malikah O'Dell well, he did develop it at a young age. His mum said he would refuse milk and breast-feeding, i believe. But, i feel parents could have done more to "train" his senses. He has a problem....but he is not encouraged to try anymore. And I hate that doctors tell all these facts or explanations...it just makes a person feel emboldened to keep doing whatever they are doing wrong.

it's a medical condition in that he's psyched himself out from eating certain things, tied to ocd or anxiety, thinking too much about texture and smells. as someone who's struggled with eating myself some days I don't want to eat anything because textures make me want to throw up. it's not purely just that he's "spoiled" that could be in play the fact that she let it go on for this long but again that's not the only thing.

Christiana it's also a physical thing. if you listened, he has extra taste buds. everything else tastes bitter to him, that's why he only eats salty foods. but he's not spoiled i can tell you that, i've known him since birth, and he's literally been this way since he was a baby. he rejected food as a baby too. it's both mental and physical for mikey.

Christiana I see where you're coming from i made myself not eat eggs for about 3 years because i ate a bad egg once. Same goes for mayo, one time i guess put a lot more mayo then i should have on my sandwich and i remember all I could taste was the disgusting mayo so i didn't eat mayo for a few years. And when i was around 8 i ate about 4 glazed donuts and i eventually got a stomachache because i ate so many of them. I have not touched a donut since then.

you all seems very ignorant its a disorder that i happen to have i can only eat extremely dry crispy foods and that limits me so much i wish i could eat healthy foods such as fruit and veg the best i can do is eat a small bit of carrot. its a disorder and honestly being told your just picky has been something everyone says to me but ive had this problem since i was 4 years old. i cant even stay in the kitchen when foods being prepared because the smells are so overwhelming its a real issue and its not easy to grow up with. i had a lot of deficiencies when i was small because all i could eat until i was 8 was baby food and porridge and toast for some reason when i was 8 i suddenly couldnt eat things with the consistency of porridge (i would have panic attacks and throw up) and although i have only really eaten unhealthy since then i no longer have to get blood tests to check my iron. dont assume its just picky eating. picky kids just dont want to eat healthy i genuinely cant get myself to and until people start to believe me my problem with food wont go away

I have selective eating disorder. Its not as severe as this kid but its pretty bad. I am a 32yo woman from a 3rd world country. I was not spoiled. I was not and am not doing this for attention. Some foods look down right GROSS. I hate grocery shopping sometimes because looking at certain foods, especially fruits make me sick. This isn't a joke. This is real.

Exactly! Until you have a kid like this or experience this, you just don't understand. We've got a kid that's more than just picky with food. Any new food he automatically rejects. He'd live off of sweets, cheeseburgers, fries, chips...things like that and be perfectly happy. He doesn't enjoy vegetables at all. And it takes multiple exposures for him to add a new food to his list of food he tolerates. He doesn't have selective eating disorder, but it's more than just picky. And more than just being spoiled, too.

My sister is 11 and she has this I'm so proud of her because she ate shrimp yesterday for the first time which has been a huge step from eating peanut butter crackers for her 3 meals a day. She has been go to her therapy for 6 months now.

my cousin is the same way. shes gotten a lot better but even as she aged, if she didnt think shed like something she'd have a panic attack basically. and if she did try it even if the liked it she would still throw up sometimes because she stressed out so much... so you've got a looong road ahead of you if thats what your little boy does have.

So many ignorant comments. I struggled with food neophobia from age 3 to age 10. Let me tell you...neophobia is all too real. It is the extreme or irrational fear or dislike of anything new, novel, or unfamiliar. He has food neophobia which can be related to texture, smell, or even appearance compared to something that is not edible. 'Picky/fussy' eaters consume an inadequate amount of a large variety of food. It's not the complete avoidance of food that you get with someone who is neophobic. He's not spoiled. He's got something in his brain that gives him fear. She even stated previously that he struggled from birth. As someone who used to have issues with being neophobic to food, education about this topic is key. Making fun of him for being neophobic toward food is just as bad as making fun of someone who is neophobic to water. Whether the neophobia was caused by getting physically sick after eating a certain food or after nearly drowning in a pool...the fear is the same.

I'm a picky eater. I was diagnosed with that same condition when I was little. I grew out of it. It's a real thing. Although people in the comments be pretending to be doctors like "he's spoiled" etc. Like get your 20 years of education in the field and a few PHD's and then talk. I was a fussy eater as a kid, I'm kinda still a fussy eater now but I'm a great cook everyone enjoys my food.

I have this phobia it almost controls my life, I don’t eat at school I don’t eat at home mostly I drink a lot of the time to kind of stop my hunger pain. Michael actually did quite well I would be in tears from just trying the new food it terrifies me to the point of trauma it doesn’t make sense to other people but I feel physically sick.

I understand that completely it's hard to live with this, because it takes over how I live my life. I do have my parents along with my, soon to be husband and his dad to help me. It makes me cry because I'm hungry but my brain won't let, me eat allot of foods or even put allot different foods in my mouth at all.

I expected him to be super thin. Not overweight. And I was way worse with food than this as a kid! I was and am freakishly picky. Like everyone goes through this! Why is this such a big deal? 😂

everyone leave this kid alone. he has neophobia, and that's linked to sensory issues. super tasters and people with sensory issues find most textures overwhelming. I have sensory issues myself and I avoid a lot of foods like the I plague due to those issues. it's annoying and frustrating. I don't want to be this way. I wish this kid luck, he seems like a bright boy and I know he doesn't want to be this way and he will overcome this.
