...just a fun story. I finally purchased a trellis for the boysenberry plants my mom brought to me many years ago. These plants began in Oakland, where I was born. From Oakland to Fresno to Millbrae to Pismo Beach. I'm in my mid 70s, my mom is long gone from this world. Life happened and I never planted them, but they come back every year. This is the year I give them a home. These berry vines made loads of boysenberry jam when my mom was alive. Enjoyed your video.🌿
I’m watching my 3 yr old ollalieberries and this video really helped me to identify the perfectly ripe ones. The key is the swelling of the seed “balls”. I’ve trained mine from 2 8x4 planter beds in the yard straddling a pathway, to go over arches over the path, made from 2 cattle panels so they also seem to be contained for the time being and look great. I’m going to let them fill both the planter boxes too so it’s just berries berries berries. For extra measure I ran 2’ chicken wire around each box to keep out critters. I live in LA county zone 18.
What's your favorite boysenberry or blackberry recipe? Do you bake, or do you make jam/preserves? If you jam, then pectin (found here: amzn.to/2KWcTdy ) is a must to help solidify things. While I love the jam, there is nothing like finding and biting into a fully ripe berry!
I love boysenberries. My grandparents used to have some. I'm not sure why I've never grown them. I thought I would stop by and check out your channel. I've been on youtube for a while, and I think you guys will do great with your channel in time. Just keep up the great work and keep enjoying what your doing. Well done!

My mouth is watering 😋. I bought a boysenberry plant last spring and it's in a large pot and it's already spread into all the pots surrounding it by tip rooting 😬. I have it growing up a trellis but it's not tall enough so falls into the other pots. I'll have to do something similar to yours by having wires attached to the wall and wrapping it around it. I'm glad I didn't plant it into the ground because it would have taked over.
+Michaela Gibbs seriously so yummy! It’s a treat to have them ripen before picking, as so many boysens are picked too early (because they go bad pretty quick off the vine).
Thank you! Now I know what to do later on when they’ve grown. I’m currently in the process of growing my own Boysenberry plants 🌱 and they’ll be growing in about a year from now. I plan to eat them fresh but I also plan to make them into a pie filling which I also want to use as a topping.
A boysenberry sends up new canes each year from the "crown" in the ground. Each cane flowers and fruits the second year (boysenberries are "Floricane"). We remove every cane that has fruited, as those canes themselves are spent and won't produce more fruit.
Boysenberries are so tasty, and I agree that slightly tart is great. It's a challenge because these berries move from unripe to overripe pretty quickly compared to blackberries.
I grew up in CA, my Dad always had Boysenberries in our backyard. I now live in Illinois and decided to plant some 2 years ago. I covered them with straw over the last 2 winters. But the patch is huge this year. I'm planning on prunning soon. What should I do about protecting them from the snow? Help!
+Nancy Nelson hi Nancy, it sounds like the most common solution is to cover them as you did with straw, or to lay the canes down when dormant all in the same direction and cover them with soil. Once weather warms a bit, the recommendation is to bring them back out and trellis them. The issue isn’t the crown, but the tender canes. You need last years canes because that’s what a boysen produces on.
I have got only one sunny spot to grow boysenberry, but corner has 1 rosemary tree and 1 lemon tree that I would like to keep. Do you think those two small trees would be companions for boysenberry?
Berries will like sun, but can tolerate some shadiness as well. Be careful about the cerries growing into the neighboring plants. They'll love to get mixed up in there pretty easily. Shouldn't be any issue with those plants being planted as neighbors.

Hey John! Shade cloth can go a long way to helping protect berries. I've also got a video on keeping birds away (but I'd use conduit instead of flexible PVC like I did in the vid. As far as squirrels, Berry vines are pretty flimsy and I haven't seen much issue with squirrel damage as a result.
Yup! I strongly suggest using a shade cloth for days where the weather is above the low 90s. This will help reduce the amount of stress on the plants and help the quality of the fruit.
I planted a boysenberry 2ft , it grew 12ft no signs of berries its just keeps growing when should I expect berries. Also I have been putting hair into the soil it suppose to help with plant growth.
Congrats on your planting! Boysenberries are "floricanes" which means they grow canes the first year, then those same canes fruit the NEXT year. So, you will have fruit on this year's growing canes, NEXT year.
@@TheBusyGardener I'm growing it in a container, how do u suggest I help support the vines to go horizontal? as of right now they are growing vertical without alot of support i have been just letting it do its thing i let the vines lean up against the wall and tie them with a small knot to thumb tacks on the wall but I'm worried it might collapse and be damaged. the only proper place I can provide it sunlight is on the balcony of our apartment/condo. Since I'm renting I'm worried when we decide to move how will I be able transfer such a large plant which I named SNOOPY btw kind of my pride and joy of plants at the moment.
I don't think thumb tacks are going to work for you. I'd go to Home Depot and get some sort of trellis material, like a piece of lattice, or one of those metal wire panels they put in concrete to reinforce it.
