Again I find myself standing on a cold winter's station platform, this time at Nottingham. This time of day prior to the evening peak period involved squeezing in several MGR trains and "LE" movements in between the many local and longer distance passenger services. Luckily the "Middle Roads" are there. The class 150 "Sprinter" was the order of the day on many of the services, but still then the Harwich to Blackpool North train was class 47 hauled. Just like at Rotherham earlier the same day a "LE" class 20 whistles through "Nose" first which was quite a rarity. A "Dead" class 56 is run round and dragged away, probably for Toton Yard. We also capture an MGR hauled by a class 58 locomotive (fast becoming the norm). So head back again to this time period piece and I do hope it brings back lots of great memories.

Blast from the past. Remember Nottingham like this as a kid, pre Robin Hood line taxi to Nottingham and a train to Birmingham before changing to go Devon on family holidays. Forgot MGR trains used to go through the station and there was that second derelict foot bridge, when was that removed?

Also miss the sound of the Valentas at Nottingham, and particularly at Grantham heading South around the curve into the station when getting a run at the hill. Maybe showing my age by saying that at around the time of this filming I was missing the regular sound of the Peaks as they sat in the middle roads waiting for their next turn. A few years before you were almost certain to find one or two at Nottingham, or not have to wait long for one to arrive.

My main recollections of this station are 1 most ‘merrymaker’ trains I rode on , peaks, 25s brushes, both type 2 and 4 running round to reverse off in the derby direction, 2 going through, without reversal only on the dated ‘skegs’ with twin 20 traction. 3 the excellent range of cheap ‘remaindered’railway books in the bookshop. Also, the great central bridge over the station wasn’t really unwanted, was it. Also, probably best peak run ever. Return merrymaker. Shut down on centre road during run round. ‘ that’s scrap’ says BR guy on failed attempts to restart. Finally get going an hour or more late, at least midnight. Being more used to 45/1 traction, me relishing this 45/0, leaning out of front door droplight, full chat all the way to Leicester, sparks out of the exhaust, probably doing the ton. Unforgettable.

Struggling to understand why a double headed Class 56 would de couple, the lead 56 would run around , Re couple and become the trailing end Class 56.

Also don't think the shunter was too happy about the MGR giving him a warning tone about two loco's lengths away from him 27:38. I know H&S gets a bad press for all the life-changing injuries it's saved but. looking back, most of it is just common sense.

Pretty certain the shunter should have had a line blockage there anyway, nobody ever used to take them though, I remember there was a train stopped on the up fast at Stafford in the early 90s having activated Gt Bridgeford HABDs, the train crew took a line block on the down fast to examine the axle, the signaller at No 4 box forgot to put reminders on and pulled off for a train, the other signaller realised what had happened and stuck a red flag out the door to stop the train, nobody was any the wiser and nothing ever came of it. Could recite loads of similar stories but probably better waiting till I've retired before I do 😂😂

So is no-one going to mention the 58 being driven from the rear cab?!
@spompey
@spompey Год назад
Yes I did see that....Really not the norm, but there must have been a valid reason....somewhere....best regards.......Mark

They're is a driver in the front, you just about see his head just as it passes
@deltic223
@deltic223 Год назад
It wasn't permissive to drive on the mainline for more than 1 signalled section from the rear cab, not even with a light engine, during this period. It's totally not permitted now, you have to change ends every time the loco changes direction now on the main line, regardless of location.
