Bracing for Hurricane Milton 

Did 2 hurricanes on board my vessel. First one made me feel invincible, the second convinced me to never ride a hurricane again.

You guys are in the best spot I’m a local and been on the water my entire life

Best of luck, we're hunkered down to single bow anchor here in Ft. Pierce Inlet (because of the daily current swing) but ready to motor off to a vector and drop our massive Fortress if we need it. But it looks like the Eye of Milton is passing Cape Canaveral and leaving us with a forecast 30 knots and 50 knot gusts, we've lived with that to single anchor many times.

Hang in there Doug! Looks like your a prepared as you can be. We ended up hauling out in a boat yard on the Okechobee waterway between LaBelle and the Lake right before Milton came to life. We have ridden out a few on water but never on the hard, will see...

Like others have said I was wondering if you might post a video of preparing to weather more weather. Good to see your preps and the details and how you've been helping others. It seems the high pressure north of FL is likely to push the hurricane more easterly than typically and if the landing point is Tampa then the off-land might be well south of St Augustine, but the whole of the state is going to get hit to some extent, as I'm sure you know. Sal at WGOWS has showed the shipping leaving Tampa and the work going on there. Hope everything goes well for all of you there.

Good luck! I’ve done several of these and prefer to be tied to something on shore if feasible. Looks like you will be hit in 3 hours and it will pass in 4 more. The neighborhood seems to be lucky with the tide still rising but not full. Three anchors and some motoring should work.

Hey Doug, just a thought on 5200, 4200. Folks on the Emerald Steel boat speak highly of the Loctite PL300 product. Way less expense, longer lasting in the tube after opening, too! Also, quite a few folks have reported some problems down the road with 4200. On the OoLaLa, we've used the Loctite stuff with really good results. One of the things we learned over the years with 5200, if you don't ever want it to move or come apart you use 5200, for all else use Life Caulk. I've seen it pull fiberglass decking off etc. when trying to get it to come apart. Outstanding stuff as it even cures under water but it was always a major ordeal to get it apart. I will be very curious how it does for you with the glass etc. maybe in the future if you are using it to form a gasket woudl be some way to form it and let it cure a little thicker then tighten the latches down to compress it.

Consider putting a second anchor "under foot" - just enough scope to drag on the bottom but not really dig in like your primary and short enough to not risk fouling. It cuts down on the yaw forces as you swing. The max force on your primary is as it is pulling your bow back through the wind. The anchor under foot helps decrease that. Just a thought since you have so much swing.

Setting anchors at both ends. Do you set the bow anchors letting the chain out extra long. Engine astern till the bow anchors set. Then drop the rear anchor and pull up on the bow winches till the rear sets firm. Then slack off on the bow giving you slack for tide changes

Toss your 5200 in the freezer in between uses. It will hold for months or until you are ready to use it again.

Double check your bilge pumps and rig up an emergency cord or battery pack so you can run them as needed if all else fails. Redundancy is key in an emergency. I'm pulling for ya. ⛵

When we do fire department operations near water we wear life jackets under our coats. It's just like you said you can shake the jacket off.

Vacuum sealer for food is an economical way to extend the shelf life of expensive sealant tubes. 👣🕊👽

On every ship I have ever worked on in the oilfield those port holes windows have always leaked. I think I would be worried if I was on a boat that didn’t have one that was leaking.

i used a cardboard box and the fan/element from my food dehydrator as my filament dryer

Doug, not sure where I read it, but it said to apply the 4200, snug it up until it squeezes out, then do the final tightening after it is mostly cured. I used so many tubes of that stuff one year, my friend was calling it "The summer of 42". God help anyone who has to remove the 5200, it's a nightmare....

If you had a vacuum sealer, you can vacuum seal those tubes, and they will last quite a bit longer..... The vacuum seal, where you make your own bags and you seal up the food.That's the one i'm talking about

5200 is a permanent adhesive be careful where it's used?

Most likely you wouldn't have to tear this type of light rain jacket off. The lifewest would take care of the zipper at least. Never seen jackets go of unless the cartridge is submerged. I have had one go when forgotten in a small boat rear locker and heavy rain collected an inch or two of water. Also launched one set when it fell of the railing attached to a drying jacket. Luckily the kits are only 20-30 bucks.

As the storm approaches from the east. I imagine it will create a storn surge as the baro pressure drops. But you need to find out if when the storm passes will it cause the sea level to drop like a tsunami pulling the water out before it comes in.

If you seal the 44 or 5200 sealer put it your crisper in the refrigerator you can keep it for a long time

Fortunately you are unlikely to get much surge on east side. Watching a lot of tornadoes 12 hrs before comings ashore around saratota ! Hunker down. I don't really like the second anchor on the shank of the main it would be better on the chain to create a bridal . danforth might Interfer with how the main sets but we will see. Cheers. Warren
