Trainer Brad Cox sent out Godolphin's Stonestreet Lexington winner Encino with his Louisiana Derby-winning stablemate Catching Freedom as soon as Churchill Downs was open for training (5:13 a.m.) Saturday for a workout to determine if Encino should join Catching Freedom and Blue Grass runner-up Just a Touch in the Kentucky Derby. The answer was yes after the pair worked five-eighths of a mile in 59.1 seconds. Cox said Encino will be ridden in the Derby 19-year-old Axel Concepcion, the 2023 apprentice Eclipse Award-winning jockey. Starts with video of Encino and Catching Freedom's work, plus b-roll. Thanks to Churchill Downs' Kevin Kerstein for the work video shot from the grandstand.
