“There is no retribution in the nature of God. Period. He is love plus nothing…”
A throughline of trust, the cross and cruciform love, the Church & Eastern Orthodoxy, Deconstruction and liberation from false constructs, leaving and finding Jesus, reorientation, faith, communion, miracles, suffering, loss, and the infinite healing love of God, abandonment and a God who never leaves, a Christocentric hermeneutic, penal substitution, eternal conscious torment and the nature of repentance, in this conversation Brad and Jason dive into Brad's book, Out of the Embers: Faith After the Great Deconstruction.

I am 61 and going the same journey, with the big question: who speaks the truth about the gospel, and when I listen to you a feeling of hope rises up in me!!!

It's amazing how many are speaking up. I appreciate this podcast so much. It helps with the lonliness of 'deconstructing '. Damon Thompson, Baxter Krueger, Eric Gilmour, Chris Garcia are some others who are talking about the gospel without penal substitution atonement theory at the crux of the matter.

I loved Brad's explanation of why he joined the Orthodox church. I can relate to needing something for my nervous system. I loved this talk in that it pointed to that even when we have a great revelation of the gospel, we can pass through very difficult times. It's almost like the more God teaches us of his love, the more we're put into situations where we have to trust in it alone and completely. I guess that's how faith grows. And I loved Brad's statement about what he feels about the head of the Orthodox church in Russia.

Piggybacking on Brad’s observation of hearing of God’s mercy during the liturgy: you also hear repeatedly God as “THE lover of mankind”

What is crazy to me is , People are searching for peace, comfort, and luxury in a warzone. From the time of the fall onwards every person born was and is born into a real warzone. To understand this is to understand unanswered prayers.

Deconstruction is a trigger word for me as I m listening to my grands deconstruct from Christianity and away from God into paganism 😭
@JasonClarkIS-youtube
@JasonClarkIS-youtube 4 месяца назад
I understand the discomfort with that word. Years ago, I decided to embrace it and love those who resonated with it. I have taken a relational approach. Instead of defending God, I endeavor to reveal the love of Jesus, trusting that it's the kindness of God that leads to repentance :) Praying grace and kindness for your grands!

I really appreciate Brad talking about the beauty of Orthodoxy. But I just have to say, the open theological and inclusive language he uses to describe the orthodox teaching is simply not patristic, nor is it true to the attitude or opinions of the contemporary saints of the church. I ended up leaving Orthodoxy because of what it officially teaches about the “heterodox”. Make no mistake, “orthodox” Orthodoxy is just as hardlined and radical as any fundamentalist evangelical. Only in Orthodoxy, to believe the things that Brad does automatically puts you outside communion with the church. It doesn’t matter what your priest says. Read the 7th ecumenical council and the acts regarding icon veneration and those who refuse to do it. Read the confession of Dositheus. Read Sts. Paisios, Porphyrios, Iakovos, Joseph the Hesychast, Nektarios, Sophrony etc. on there beliefs about Catholics and Protestants… I WISH what Bradley said about the Orthodox Church were true. And while I’ve met some people IRL who act as if Orthodoxy is as open as Brad says, it simply doesn’t exist dogmatically in the church.

I imagine Brad would agree with much of your assessment. At the end of this conversation, he critiques the orthodox leadership on a specific subject. I think you can find fundamentalism everywhere. But I agree; I appreciate Brad's open and relational approach to the Church.

@@JasonClarkIS-youtube Very true. I just wanted to post a comment to create as clear a picture as possible. Many people are mistakenly looking at conversion to orthodoxy because they’ve only been exposed to some sort of idealized version of it being presented by pop apologists etc. They see it as an escape from crazy evangelicalism. They ain’t gonna find an escape from it in Orthodoxy. I was happy to hear Brad offer criticism where it’s due. But simply put, much more could be said than what he had time to say. Orthodoxy is VERY strict and extremely works orientated. There’s just no other way around it. I suppose if a person can be in that system and simply not follow it then kudos to them. But to truly adhere to Orthodoxy is to accept her teachings. And her teachings, unfortunately, largely do not comport with the beautiful stuff you guys share in this podcast. Nor does what they teach comport with much of scripture. You’re whole show is based around an inclusive and loving God who wants all of us to be saved and United with Him for all eternity. Amen to that! Ok, now contrast that notion to the canon of repentance to the Theotokos and tell me if it describes the loving God you guys talk about every episode. Read the confession of Dositheus and tell me if what is said about Catholics and Protestants is an emulation of a loving and inclusive God. It’s not just that there are “fundamentalists” in every tradition of Christianity. The fundamentalist stuff in Orthodoxy IS ORTHODOXY. That’s the point. The official teachings of the church are extremely sectarian, and not at all inclusive. Sorry if I’m beating a dead horse, but it’s Imperative people know this stuff before getting potentially sucked into anything.

@@IAMFISH92 , thanks for sharing and further clarifying. Because I am relational in all things (focused on a self-giving, other-centered, all-inclusive love that restores all things), I am comfortable finding the beauty in most Christian traditions. I am not Orthodox and I couldn't make those shoes fit. But I can find things about them to compliment, haha. "The fundamentalist stuff in Orthodoxy IS ORTHODOXY. That’s the point." That's helpful- I appreciate it!

I really wanted to hear this but couldn't get past the political comments of Brad Jersak. Since I am aware of the propaganda being fed on all fronts, I hoped it would be kept out of this. It's really hard to see God's love and hear anyone in politics called the antichrist.
@JasonClarkIS-youtube

I can understand the distaste for anything that smacks political. I appreciate Brad's passion, and even if I were to disagree, I appreciate different perspectives. The discomfort I may feel with someone who may have differing views from me is an opportunity to seek understanding. Thanks for the feedback, Kathy. Praying grace and wonder over you tonight!
