The heart wrenching story of one 18 year old lads fight to get help in his dying weeks. How professionals told him he had a zero percent chance of survival, yet they were discharging home without support.
Brads Mum tells his story of courage and fight as they fought as a family in the hope Brad could overcome the dismal brain cancer diagnosis he had been given.
You've heard Emily's story and why Karen finds herself here, now its time to hear about Bec's son Brad.

Having just watched Bec's story about Brad, and Karen's story yesterday about Emily, I am incensed by the lack of treatment and empathy from the medical professions. I lost my husband Steve to a GBM4 on 2nd May 2021, 14 months after losing my sister to COVID and me having three operations, one major, in the interim. The more I listened to the lack of support you dear ladies (and husbands/families) received the angrier I got. It was the same for me. I can't even talk about what happened in my case as I am completely numb, still! My heart goes out to you both/all. 💔

Thank you for sharing and sadly it does seem to be a postcode lottery in terms of the level of care and support you can receive. I am sorry that you know this pain too, it makes it all so much harder, doesn't it, the feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. Thank you for watching about our children and learning more about how wonderful they are, we miss them terribly and love nothing more than to share them with others x

Why do some people work in health care if they don’t even care?? Only status of doctors? Burnout? Thank you so much for sharing Bradleys story ♥️🙏 You was his best ever advocate and carer, but you should never been left alone!! Ever!! You gave him the best you ever could, and I know from your story that he was very proud and comforted of that!! Rest in Peace brave and great young man ♥️♥️♥️

@annelarsson152. As a Neonatal nurse, I fully endorse your comment. I can't comprehend the lack of compassion and empathy. The jaw droppingly careless treatment of Bradley is inexcusable. I'm furious at the change, in medical or nursing care, in the UK. (I emigrated, because I couldn't face working for the NHS any longer) The retirement of experienced nurses( with many more, trained the 'old' excellent way, due to retire over the next 5 years) has left a huge void . Now the NHS is stuck with inexperienced, ill educated, non caring Staff. I'm so sorry for your loss of Bradley

My nephew went to the doctor because his knee was swelling and it wasn’t going away. After some “tests” they said that the cancer had spread throughout his body and he had metastases in his brain. There was nothing, they said, that could be done. For four weeks we heard nothing, then he was admitted into a hospice. He was 6’ 3” but six weeks after his diagnosis, he was just skin and bone. We could hardly make out his outline in the bed. He got stuck with a driver that they kept turning up. I didn’t know whether we should pull it out but I knew he was in a lot of pain. He drifted into semi consciousness, then slipped into a full on coma. He died 12 weeks from the diagnosis. I’m still not sure if speed was better or worse. I kept thinking, “what if I had money,” but it doesn’t seem to matter. George Harrison had all the money in the world but he ended his days on a morphine driver. It’s bad. I am broken hearted at the cruel, callous way your family were treated. How can these people behave like that and claim to be “the caring profession?” It doesn’t bear thinking about but then I remember the Liverpool Care fiasco where older (not by any means old) people were stuck on morphine and killed off in the thousands. Why do these people never have to answer for their behaviour? They should be arrested, tried and jailed but it never happens. Love to Bradley and to all of your family. It’s not right. It’s really not. None of it is ok. ❤

You two ladies are inspirational. I can’t believe the fight Bradley’s family had for support and care. A mum knows her child so why did they even question your need for help with your boy. As you say he was a big lad. Unbelievable responses from some NHS people. Glad Sue Ryder came through in the end. When I sat day after day with my sister In the hospice, most of the staff were amazing. She drifted in and out a lot but I went to speak to the Nurse in charge one day as my sister was getting so distressed about medication etc. she just snapped at me, “you do know your sister is in here for end of life care.” Of course I knew but she still deserved to be spoken to and reassured in my opinion.

How Bradley's story hit home for me. My girl died from cancer 7years ago, and although she was older (diagnosed at 25,died at 35) The "care" she recieved was bloody awful, and i am still and always will be bitter about that. ❤❤ I can't even watch when the Macmillan ads come on tv. She saw her nurse twice in these 10 years, and the woman did absolutely nothing. As you will no doubt realise, that's only a tiny tip of the iceberg. You were so brave because i don't ever share my daughters story to this day. A testament of your love and promise to your Bradley. Thank you x

They say truth is stranger than fiction. The lack of compassion as well as the disregard for Bradley's medical needs would be hard for some people to believe if they haven't seen it. It beggers belief. But I felt like you were telling my story during my Mum's stage 4 cancer journey, so I really know how substandard care can be, and how callous medical people can be. My mum had secondary brain tumours and was paralyzed in a bed for nearly four months, yet we couldn't get our GP to visit Mum in the home. The only way to get her any medical help was to call an ambulance but when paralyzed and so sick, that journey was traumatic. Anyway, like you said, when we got to hospital the doctor missed mum out on his rounds because she was terminal. But she still had medical needs within that terminal diagnosis. Hospice were no help because they said they don't give medical help, just end of life support. They said go to the GP (how?? Wheel her bed down the road??), and the GP wouldn't come out. Or we would have to go to hospital each time we needed even the simplest medical help. It could be something as simple as a urine infection that we needed help with. Easily treatable, even in her circumstances, but we couldn't get medical help from anyone. The trauma that the family feels as they keep hitting their head against a brick wall no matter how much they advocate is horrific. And as you were expressing, your son, and my mum we precious, brave, undemanding patients who deserved the very best care during their remaining time. I feel so sad for your family, and for mine, and all the others out there that in our darkest hour, were abandoned in the community without the resources needed. I'm so glad that during the last bit of time, your son was surrounded by so much love and care. He sounds like a remarkable person. My heart is with you. Thank you for sharing your story. So much of what you're saying helps validate my feelings because you expressed the same anguish, hurt and frustration that the medical professionals caused in an already tragic situation. I wish our stories held the peace, care and tenderness throughout that would have at least softened the edges of what was unfolding.
@RoomToGrieve
@RoomToGrieve Месяц назад
Firstly Thank you for watching Brads story and commenting, secondly oh my goodness your mum’s treatment was appalling. Yet we know this is not out of the ordinary, unless people have been in this situation they simply would not believe it happens. It seems that the nicest families that don’t scream and shout are constantly let down. Our friend is in a very similar situation at the moment where her mum has constant urine infections, she is not able to get her to a surgery and keeps ending up in hospital, where she then deteriorates further, they are basically waiting for her to die. We understand every single thing you have detailed and the lack of willingness to offer help or medication that would clearly make your mums situation more tolerable is disgraceful. It all boils down to they are going to die anyway so what’s the point in prolonging, I know that’s blunt but it’s reality. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Bec & Karen. ❤️
@Allie-Eliza
@Allie-Eliza Месяц назад
@@RoomToGrieve You voiced that so well. The loss of access to basic human rights and resources when a person is most in need locks the family into a living nightmare. I hear in your story the same thing that I face, in that, now that my Mum has passed, I have two distinct things to work through. One is the trauma of the events during the illness with the extra trauma from callousness from the medical system. The other is the enormous grief of losing someone we cherished, and the enormity of what they have lost, even more so in your case when they are so young. Time will certainly soothe some of the emotions as we move away from the rawness of it all. Like you said, within that journey, through the illness, there were many treasured moments where the depth of our love for each other was so apparent, and a lot of time was spent with each other as the need for support increased. I also hope that gradually those memories will stay foremost, and the anguish of all the things that caused the extra trauma will recede. I appreciate when others, like yourself, share their feelings, as it affirms that the types of emotions that I'm working through are natural and expected in these circumstances. Even so, it's so sad to hear that another family has gone through this. I'm in NZ, so it's not just the NHS that's letting people down. I always believed our medical system was great, so I was repeatedly shocked each time a medical service failed, was cruel, or denied even basic services. I don't have faith that it will improve here because I'm not convinced, even after constantly advocating for my mum, that the medical services took any feedback on board. I think they probably just dismissed me as a person in denial of the terminal prognosis (I was never in denial), or overly emotional because of anticipatory grief. That dismissive attitude was often conveyed to me, so I suspect they did not see their failings. It was sureal at times. I take responsibility that I need to aim to leave the bitterness behind so that I can work on building a future for myself that has space for happiness. I know I will do that, but I'll never be the same.

As a Neonatal Nurse, I'm stunned to hear about the negligence of Bradleys care. Using the word 'care' very loosely. I've NEVER in 30 years of nursing/midwifery seen this happen. (I did emigrate years ago, as I couldn't face working in the NHS any longer) It's unbelievable . I'm so sorry you and Bradley were betrayed in this huge way. I'm in tears, typing this. Sadly all the nurses who trained on the Wards, before they went to Uni,training, are due to retire in the next 5 years, including myself. The nursing care deteriorated SO MUCH when nurses had a degree, but NO CLUE how to nurse!! (I did a degree, but after many, many years of nursing.) So things will only deteriorate. Poor, poor Bradley. He shouldn't have suffered in this way. Nor you or your family. Youve all experienced true Hell and i couldn't be more furious. May he rest in peace 🕊️🕊️ Ill never forget his story. I feel physically sick.....

I know what it’s like to deal with horrible head of care I live in the United States, Alabama to be exact. I had osteosarcoma of the right fibula, and my oncologist literally almost killed me with overdosing me on chemo I was in full kidney failure they treated me like a drug addict because I was in pain and would tell them that and they would say I just wanted pain medication to be high and I was like no I have bone cancer. It was ridiculous.

Devastatingly sad especially to hear the lack of care you were left with as I always believed there is incredible support for all cancer people so that has come as a complete shock to hear how much you had to advocate for your gorgeous Brad and not just accepting what the medical profession said really paid off and I so admire how you were able to do that. I think anyone watching that’s either experiencing this now or could in the future will remember to the strength it must have taken and the results you got as you really made such a difference to Brads last few months. I really feel for you. I get migraines: Slurred speech & numb limbs isnt a thing with them. At all. My Dad's brain cancer was misdiagnosed as high blood pressure by the family Dr. He was a super intelligent man & kept telling us it was a brain tumour. It took 2months of him being at home with no pain meds before i snapped & made another Dr appt. I was due to go back to college & my Mom wasnt coping. Then my Dad somehow got to his yearly opticians check up & the optician went white & gave us a sealed letter "for your Dr". We steamed it open, saw what it said & rang the surgery. 3months later he died in a private care home ( private care came with his job). ❤❤

Before my recent cancer diagnosis I also thought all NHS is broken... I felt brushed off with my symptoms, I heard is normal for some women to have these symptoms which were gradually getting worse and worse so I keep coming to my GP who sent me to see a Gynecologist..... 10 months waiting list ... then another few for another appointment, then weeks, more weeks, days... thanks to seeing different people every time and their different approach , different tests I got my cancer diagnosis.... and from this very moment NHS is just so wonderful so helpful and supporting of me... I am having my life saving surgery in a couple of days and thanks to NHS support I am afraid to face it.... I am so sorry for lack of support and understanding these mothers had to go through ...... 😢😢 this is a pure example of broken NHS system system... I guess it all depends where we live. I live in Bolton and honestly I have mostly good things to say about NHS . I am preparing for all people who have cancer to only see the good and supporting NHS ❤

Compassion to her and her family. I increasingly wonder if parents have the right to lie to children or loved ones who are terminally ill. In the case of children, they do have agency. I wonder if honesty with great kindness isn’t what they are owed. That the adults have to bear the discomfort of the child’s choices and emotions and not insist on one path. Not being unkind, just curious about many things we protect people from that are not ours to control. Ones last weeks or moths in this iteration are the most precious things we have to live the way we choose. I just am unsure if others should decide how that time is experienced. As an adult, I would very much not want to be lied to or have decisions made for me about anything. Cancer is a terrible illness. I’m glad he had the love of his family.

I was a nurse for 16 years, and spend a fair few years working in paliative care and what happened to you all is unacceptable. The nhs is failing so many people. I personaly could not cope with the stress anymore and had to leave the job i know i was born to do. I didnt want to turn into a health care proffesional so overworked that i lost my empathy as that is just as important as the acctual treatment. Remember every med check call appointment will be documented and you have the write to request his notes and with your memory you can pin point the mistakes and take it further. Its not fair to lose a child so young let alone to feel so alone in doing so. I’m a nurse in the U.S. and want to say I’m terribly sorry how your son was let down by so many medical professionals. I no longer work because of being misdiagnosed for many years, now most of my body was affected. (Late stage autoimmune illness) If I’m able to return to work one day I’d like to be an advocate for patients, especially after my own experiences I’m well aware of serious issues in the medical system. Your story reminds me of that - I’ve had patients who experienced trauma while trying to receive care. Our system is run by big pharma (yep I’m now a conspiracy theorist) and things are getting even worse. So much wasted money on unnecessary things is spent but often simple basic needs of patients is ignored. I’m so sorry for your loss of Bradley. It was so beautiful how your family and friends pulled together for him ❤ What stands out is the hospital discharged him to go home to die but didn’t arrange hospice in the first place - that is cruel 😢 You did a great job advocating for your son
