I am not a plumber so I am not up on all the latest and greatest tools. That tool is for the fitting (no solder) is amazing. I would never invest it it because I am not in the industry. But if I were. Omg. Great video

I bought a hydraulic hand pump version before a project. Super handy for about $220. "IBOSAD Copper Tube Fittings Hydraulic Pipe Crimping Tool". Fittings are expensive bet less than Sharkbites so it's perfect for sections of plumbing where you aren't comfortable soldering.

Chuck, I notice that the gas pipe is Galvanized pipe which is ideal for carrying water but not suitable for carrying gas?

Hey chuck. Been wondering what kind of codes you guys got around there. If I’m doing a tank, I usually need an expansion tank, and a vacuum breaker. Also, you guys are allowed to use dwv pipe for venting? Here we need cpvc or maybe even sch 80.

Just had a new 75 gal Bradford power vent replaced. After watching your videos and reading manual I'm worried if it was installed properly. It is a 20 ft horizontal vent run that they actually made it have an upward slope of 4 inches and they attached the PVC to the old outside flapper vent as opposed to continuing the 3 inch PVC through the wall and use the included terminal vent piece. They told me I needed a condensate kit. (possibly because how they made an upward slope. Your input would be appreciated.

Good question I am in the process of researching these high efficacy venting systems trying to figure out horizontal or a vertical vent installation wish someone would produce a video breaking down the installation process and when a condensation kit is needed.

Can you install a power vent gas water heater where there is originally an atmospheric vent gas water heater, and use the existing chimney vent ? Or do you have to drill new holes to the outside for the power vent install ?

outside wall or use chimney as a chase. you can double check with local code official too.

Quick tip learned from another vid: When wrapping teflon tape around nipples in tight spaces, wrap a segment of the tape around the end of a pencil first, then apply to the threads from the pencil.

In California we not allowed to add a angle straight out the vent. Minimum 6 inches before a bend but prefer 8-12 inches. We had a problem where the tank kept shutting off because of the way it was vented.

The power vent is costly because it uses gas and electricity. Its cheaper to buy a traditional water heater

My AO Smith power vent is failing and I'm considering a Bradford & White. But I've read several owner reviews who knock the B&W for the blower being louder than other power vent blowers. Interested in your thoughts?

chuck,i just picked up the same unit,50 gal,in the instructions it does say to comply with nsf requirements,unit needs to be sealed to floor w/sealant or use optional leg kit to provide min. 6" beneath...what the hell...i plan on calling ...cost 1400.00

Where does that drain go when you drill through the floor? Does is go into a crawl space so you don't have to worry about it?

ideally, you'd pipe it to a floor drain in a visible location, like basement laundry tub area or sump pump crock! very often there's a floor drain for the A/C evap right there, so that is location #1

Good question! Customer did upgrade to power but stopped there when she could of went gold with a Tankless but did not.

CB-1 great job I don't use flex gas lines I use black pipe only I've seen too many things happen with those flex pipes peace brother

some areas it's code and required to have flex gas supply.. mostly the shakey quakey states (like crapifalia) :))

I noticed in your vids you guys use galvanized instead of black iron, my area is trac pipe& wardflex/copper/black. they prefer galvanized in your area for some reason?

salt air....we have to use outside and I just carry all galv instead of both. I hate mixing because you know your always gonna be missing that one piece of black or galv to finish job.

Chuck Barron Thanks for answering. I should have been more specific. Mine is plugged in to the furnace outlet. House built in 2002. Two electricians said a dedicated outlet not needed. Grandfathered in. Home inspector says otherwise. 600 bucks to run a dedicated line. Can I leave it as is. In Ohio.

CB I live on Staten Island and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a plumbing supply house here sell Bradford White. I see you use them all the time, are they that good? Plenty of AO Smith for sure in the supply houses and Rheem is big in Home Depot, not sure what Lowe’s carries.

Chuck Barron I just changed (March 2018) out my old Rheem water heater that lasted 12 years, with another Rheem. The first Rheem was installed by one of those water heater companies that only do water heaters. Decent price for 12 years ago. So I decided to use another Rheem (unfortunately had to use Home Depot, they had the same size Rheem in stock) and do this one myself. It basically fit right in where the old one was, so a simple and I mean SIMPLE replacement. Cost was the price of the heater and $125 to my buddy for his van and help. Hoping I get another 10-12 years out of this one. Keep up the great videos, love them!

Yes. The salt air in ocean makes it a requirement outside so I just stock galv for all gas work I do.

I installed a Rheem Power Vent water heater back in 1996. I vented it with a 3" PVC Sch40 pipe straight up for 24" and then immediatly exiting my home with a 45 degree elbow. Even with this 24" vertical 3" PVC pipe run, the PVC was still considerably hot to the touch to where this vertical 24" PVC pipe turned brown in a few weeks from the extreme heat. Seeing your 2" PVC 45 degree elbow coming directly out of the power vent, I would be extremely concerned that this 45 degree elbow that you used would be at risk of being severly damaged from the extreme heat coming out of the power vent.

they are a bit noisy...no louder than any other power vent.

My luck there would be a floor joist right where the pan drain hole was drilled LOL

if it's not tile floor, peck it with a hammer and cloth, the sound will be a dull low thud where floor joists are, when your between them it will be higher pitch hollow and "ring/springy" :) I can usually tell just by stepping hard with one foot and watching for flex, even with tile.

hehe, dead center of the diagonal brace strap. you should have left it in tact and moved you're hole IRL. I usually go with long 1/4" twist drill bit and gently, then use long flathead cabinet screw driver(round shank) to feel around in the wall, never know when there will be major structural or other things like electric, plumbing, hvac, etc. sure is a ton easier to caulk a small hole vs patch a huge one and likely nobody will notice/complain :)

Thanks for this comment...It's Probably 100 comments down from the top someone calls out the fact he cut a structual strap. I get it, retro work can be tough as hell but there was a path to victory INCHES AWAY! I saw that strap the instant the drywall plug came out! Maybe consider replacing this install video with another without a terrible example for the next generation of plumbers.

@@Originalsmp wow harsh. not everyone knows carpentry and framing enough to know about diagonal bracing and the likes. simply paying attention to things in new construction helps, even if you the electrician or plumber, you quickly learn what to not cut, drill or notch, as you'll get smacked on the head hard =p

Chuck Barron any model. All power vents will experience condensation within the exhaust pipe. There is a special coupler you get that has a connection to a hose to collect and drain the condensation

On 2 inch pvc u can only go 45 ft to vent.3 inch 115 to vent each 90 is 5 ft.45s are 3 ft

With a setup like this, it is impossible to service to blower or anode rod. Tankless water heater probably makes more sense in this application.

In Europe that whole roomful of junk would be replaced with a single combi boiler around the size of a microwave oven, serving both central heating and hot water. That setup looks like something from a soviet bunker, and not in a good way.
