Moe Norman & Ben Hogan showed this as their 'magic move" to the golf swing. The right arm needs room to get out in front of the body so it can release and not straighten. The arms need to work back towards the torso so they can pack in and the body can then take over. Learn more about the illusions of the golf swing and how the greats really did it and how you can learn to be better at bradleyhughesgolf.com

Very fortunate.!! I just had a lesson with Bradley Hughes and all I can say is dont walk but run to get instruction from him personally or his programs. (No i don't know him)This was one of the things i was corrected on and for the first time ever I saw real benefits to my swing within a week. His lessons to me unlock the "mysteries" of the golf swing not by empty complex words nor by a series of positions, but by a feel, that with some drill practice, is easy to repeat. It is extroardinary that the best golf instructor is relatively unknown especially by RU-vid subsribers. He is the only one who did not confuse my swing but made real improvements that makes me yearn to get on the course every weekend again. These instruction clips are Gold. Thank you Mr Hughes.

This is absolutely brilliant Mr. Hughes!! I currently play to a +1, but have struggled with consistency (decent short game and putter saves my @$$). I could never quite grasp the "feeling" of letting the hands drop in transition until I saw this video. I decided that despite the fact that it seemed the opposite of what I was trying to accomplish that I would give it a go because I've realized over the years that golf truly is a game of opposites. All I can say is WOW!! My Ball-Striking is insanely good, and on video my hands are actually working down!!! My swing has never felt this good - EVER. Thank you beyond words for sharing this!!! This combined with releasing the heel through impact has changed my game - effortless power and accuracy. THANK YOU AGAIN SIR!!!!

This is 100% gold. Bought Brad’s drill series a few years ago and it’s completely transformed my swing and game. It takes a bit of effort to ingrain the correct feels but once you get them there’s no better solution. Golf is way more fun when you make consistent contact with tight ball dispersion.

Thank you so much! One quick note about some of the mistakes I've made because of the illusion of how this video was filmed (or maybe it's just an illusion that I personally had and couldn't figure out). I learned that the arms out move happens as you are still rotated into your backswing, meaning your back is still facing the target as this happens. It looks from this video that arms out happens as the body is back into address position but it actuallt needs to happen at the top of the backswing without the shoulder leading this move. Hope this helps someone who may have struggled to understand this like me at first.

That’s spot on. This has been my main swing thought for a couple years now. Hands arms move first which induces lower body to then rotate

This is absolute gold. I struggled with it at first because I was putting the hands out more on the downswing. Once I got the feel of my hands going out from the top of the backswing the club swings around on a natural arc and the it just releases. If anything I was hitting too big off a hook but I can work with that. Man I would love to have a lesson with Bradley!!

I discovered this today and my mind is blown at the unbelievable difference! If there's a "secret" to the golf swing then this is it. I finally understand what those terms like "skipping a stone" and "you hit the ball out in front of you" really mean. It is way way way more in front and away from your body than you think. For me I try to get my hands to go right through the ball. And yes it's that drastic.

This advice is so true but so completely counter to how the swing looks and how most golf instruction advises. Unless you miraculously discover this feeling (as I recently did) there is no way you would assume this swing feeling and move is correct. I find that it actually feels like a form of casting the club with the hands (but without the shoulder involved). Jack Nicklaus also mentions he focused on throwing the club head from the top and I assume this is what he means. Brad do I assume your lower body moves first before your hands and arms make the move?
@SaintKimbo
@SaintKimbo 6 лет назад
You are missing the point if you need to ask 'what moves first'. The correct arm and hand action will automatically trigger the body, you just need to trust it. It's the conscious movement that gets in the way and ruins it. If you trip on a step, you don't need to think about what part of the body moves first, as you try to regain your balance, do you? Do kids think about body positions etc., when they expertly skip a stone across a pond? This is the 'secret' of the golf swing, if there is such a thing.

Wow! I've got to try this drill in the morning! Unfortunately I was taught something much different!? In fact, I was taught to hit Iron shots with a handkerchief or small towel in between my right armpit and body, and not let it fall out until after impact. The idea, I suppose, was to promote an inside to outside swing? Well I stopped improving at about age 17 and that's about when I was taught this nonsense. Thanks for the tip/drill! I'll be up at daylight to try it!

Bradley Hughes - I dont want to pump this guy's tires up too much but he is absolute brilliant. although he didn't mention in this video but he does in other videos, this "out" is actually very natural if you get the right concept in your mind. since human beings were born to hunt and kill, we are genetically and evolutionary incredible at aiming straight and using our hands and body to project objects. however in golf, because there is an object on the ground, we essentially become disoriented and our perspective becomes skewed, that's why 99% of all handlcap golfers aim 45% to the right thinking they are in line with target and they come way over the top, and they never get any better. this out to in move isn't the only way to hit the ball but for the majority of the hackers in the world, including myself, this is the easiest way to create speed, consistency and most importantly a stable shaft/face dynamic, assuming of course are you aimed correctly. if you aren't aligned or aim correctly, all bets are off, one day you can shoot near par and next day you can barely break a 100.

My old instructor used to tell me to swing "out" from the top and not "down". I never understood what he meant but now I do. I never was able to do it as I tried. My hands would just always go down in transition and get the shaft steep. When you do swing "out" it gets the clubface wide open and I just don't know how to deal with that. The shots would just be big high push slices.

This was an awesome instruction!!! I was trying control the club path to the ball. I had no idea that when you have your hands go out that the club would come back down to the ball. My perception was soooo off. And by doing that, your body would rotate after impact not before. I've been doing the opposite. Also how flat should we have our clubs? If you're using the shaft/hosel to go through the swing/ball then it would be good to have the lie angle really flat?
@GolfAusBradleyHughesGolf

Charles Doral maybe have a flatter club to practice with to initially help see this happen but generally the full set wouldnt need to be too flat- standard lie is fine

Just went to the range and tried this, my brain tells me that its an over the top move however the ball flight was baby draw, for most I hit it really well I missed left on a few and right on a few drives but that's the old right arm back to the hip thing that causes the over top move, going to be hard to get that out but it feels great having what seems like more freedom to swing.

If I use my forearm rotation actively in the downswing, I can hit it further and lower. The feeling is that I start early with this in the downswing. The more I feel to rotate my forearms clockwise in the backswing the more I can use my active counter clockwise arm rotation in the downswing. Is that a problem or misinterpretation of what you do?

Brad, it appears you have changed your thoughts on releasing the club through impact. I just watched a video you produced in 2011 on releasing the club and you talk about having the arms connected, packed is the word you use, and you indicate the more room between the body and the left arm the more difficult to control the club. Just wondering what changes have you seen or experienced to cause a 180 degree change in your instructions? Or am I mis-understanding the first video?

Starting at 3:20 mark around the 4:00 mark you talk about the arms coming close to the body later from that "out" position. Its a reaction to the release as far as I understand you. How does that influence the path? Tighter before impact is more in-to-out and your promoted action seems to be more out-to-in. Is that an illusion?
@GolfAusBradleyHughesGolf
@GolfAusBradleyHughesGolf 6 лет назад
illusion....more hands and arms (especially the right arm) can be out the more rotation you will have in the arms (to lay the shaft back) and also in the wrists (to keep the clubhead up)...both lead to an inside entry of the clubhead.. opposite forces of hands working left from what feels outside and the club working from the inside... no straight lines in a swing...opposite pressures are what create the better functional swings

If I may offer my experience....I too have struggled with this since I first saw it when it was uploaded. I think I found something this week though. So I was trying to put my arms in this position during the swing but without success. No problem in slo mo but once you go to full swing speed, the pressures and forces are completely different. What seemed to click for me this week was grip pressure. In transition I feel a lot of grip pressure in the last 3 fingers of my left hand (right handed golfer here). It’s a feel like I’m trying to open a really super tight jar lid with my left hand and turning the back of the wrist away from me at the same time (I think I saw a Brad video talking about this but can’t find it). I had a mirror behind me at the range when trying this. It looked like it help shallow the club a lot. Brad’s teaching about forces and pressures is spot on. This opening jar grip pressure feeling helped me understand what Joseph Mayo talked about in his wrist angles video on Vimeo vimeo.com/252977915 Joe is one of the very few instructors worth a follow along with Brad. Good luck and remember, forget positions, think what pressures and forces are needed to execute the movement you want. ATB Paul R.

@@DriveFarGolf Thanks Paul. Ironically I have been working on flattening my wrist on the backswing as it's too cupped. So your advice is probably spot on and part of my problem. I think I also get too much weight on the balls of my feet on the downswing which I need to work on too.
@DriveFarGolf
@DriveFarGolf 4 года назад
Darren P sounds like we do the similar things, I take the club back a bit too much on the inside and get cupped at the top, but it took me a long time to realise I don’t need to worry about it, as I don’t hit the ball on the backswing 🙂 sure it might help get to the correct place in the transition a bit quicker but I don’t have time to spend hours sorting it. Plus so many f the greats cupped a little at the top, Sam Snead was one. For me the weight too far forward, I try and get armpits lined up over the toes so I know I’m balanced well. 👍🏻🏌🏻‍♂️

Brad I've watched every one of your videos several times, the BEST teacher available in my opinion. Teaching how the greatest ever ball strikers to live did it instead of this modern day wack teaching methods. Question however: I have practiced this a lot lately and I can't get over the sensation that I am going to totally miss the ball on the downswing with my hands so far out from my body... from your point of view while hitting, does it almost feel like you are cutting across the ball to the left from that point through the follow through? I understand that since the club is back behind our body it technically is coming from the inside, but I'm trying to gauge what the actual feeling is from early transition where the hands are out from the body to when you get to impact and beyond.. should it feel like you are coming way over top while simultaneously keeping the forearm range and club behind you? Please help, I feel once I can fully understand this it will be my golden ticket

As the arms rotate back towards the body the hands go lower and return shaft to very much where it was at address.. no need to try hit- it does it all for you

thanks so much Brad! I have been a disciple of your videos and online lessons and anyone who does not watch your content is doing themselves a huge disservice. Hope to see you compete on the Champions Tour one day soon!

Brad, is this a decent position in my video link? you can really see it if you put the speed on .25 it slows it down substantially... I have been really feeling like my hands are way out in front on down swing just like in this cone drill, but it still seems as if the arms aren't packing back in tight enough through the strike and the right arm is not staying bent and lifting up slightly at impact.. what is the move from this position that i should be feeling? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2HUmfrEyLII.html

AMG have proved the hands go down near vertical from the top.

Try that feel and let us know how it goes. I’m actually curious. When I do the “hands out feel” like Bradley demonstrates here, my hands do still pretty much work down (and out). It’ll never just work out.

correct...see the name of the video

Ok Bradley, so if hands out is actually down, how would one hypothetically actually move the hands out? By feeling them go up?! It’s illogical. If I try hands out they actually go out and make it like a trick shot to even hit the ball.

@@johnnybravo9087 you wouldnt have them go out unless the ball was up in the air like a tee ball or like a baseball hit... remember this is the 4th or 5th thing I teach players....430 path first- footwork- post impact- then start to deal with this stuff

Can you not wear Black shirt so we can see your right arm and elbow in relation to right hip in downswing?

So many people telling different story how the golf swing should be. Some said, keep the hands in, now this guy saying your hands should be out.. I don't know

Seilogo Lauago do you want your hands in front of the body or behind your body?

thus ends a million and one pointless arguments 95% of coaches have with themselves on how to teach the golf swing.
