I could listen to this piece over and over again. It's perfection! Played by these two giants of the classical firmament, it even surpasses the piano concertos and symphonies for me and I really LOVE those. Thanks so much for posting this. ❤

First time I heard this composition it was the Heifetz/Piatigorsky recording on RCA. It has been my favorite for a long time. A great match. But this Stern/Ma version is indeed good and it it much fun to watch the performance - especially Yo Yo Ma. He puts a lot into the physicality. I love Ma's musical interpretations and facial expressions. Stern barely moves anything but his fingers - but what perfection in his fingering! His fingers glide like silver. No exertion necessary - he nails it.

Yes, the best!! The beautiful recording with Heifetz and Piatigorsky. Alfred Wallenstein conducting. I have enjoyed it from my early childhood. Then there's a preformance by Oistrakh and Rostropovich, magnificent! Mstislav is superb!

Kazuyoshi AKIYAMA is a hypnotic performer, generously expressive and I feel certain that the orchestras brilliant performance is due to this. As regards the soloists it was everything one would expect from them but I would have liked to have heard Isaac Stern more clearly. I think that must be due to the recording because the Suntory hall usually sounds excellent or possibly the power of Yo Yo Ma's cello at times. As with others before me, this is music that grips and moves, Brahms at his best.

I saw Stern perform three concertos at a free concert at the Robin Hood Dell around 1960. One was Prokofiev during which he broke a string and promptly relieved one of the violin players of his instrument. The other two might have been Tchaikovsky and Brahms, definitely not Beethoven or Sibelius. On another occasion at the Academy of Music I saw him start the Beethoven and then stop while Ormandy played on. After a few seconds of waiting for Ormandy to notice he'd stopped playing, he rapped Ormandy across the read with his bow whereafter a brief conference, they started over.

Great stories, especially the one about his grabbing another violin vs. his own which I assume had amazing sound. Thank you.

I once conducted this concerto and we threw the kitchen sink at it which is exactly what these two boys are doing. The microphone placing is not good and shows Stern as a bit feeble. You can see from the video that he was anything but.

I first heard this symphony at age 15 and was mesmerized. My cat hated the volume. It's annoying that cameras are shoved in performer's faces because it's unnatural, most audience members would see the artists from a half block away. Yo Yo always looks like he is re-living his last Brazilian massage.

I agree 1joehigg......I would like to see the musicians fingers and back off a bit to see style. As a violinist I need to learn from the greats. As for Yo Yo his look is like that Brazilian massage with a very long finger nailed attendant.......

Does anybody know whether or not the fact that they are both playing with the music and not from memory reflects normal performance practices in Japan?
@Music2Die4
@Music2Die4 3 года назад
It's normal practice for concertos with multiple performers..... If you watch video of the Brahms Double (or Beethoven Triple), you'll see most of the performances have the concerto performers both (all) using sheet music.

Terrible microphone placement - directly in front of and aimed at Ma, leaving Stern in the side field. Believe me, Stern always had a sound that matched Ma in real life, although you'd never know it from this recording. And, what's with the "66 years old"? He played magnificently for another decade.
@NickBottom

+John Sankey Well his sound there is not as full as it was in the 60ies but it's still great, great music making. Did you hear him live?
@johnsankey9568

+Nick Bottom yes. With Rose & Istomin as a student (I think 1963), then twice with the Montreal Symphony. No one who loves the violin could dream of considering him as anything other than magnificent

Just a thought, how many American, or Europhean orchestras play full evening Japanese music?
@thomasscream4179
@thomasscream4179 7 лет назад
The orchestra was made for old european music. There probably aren't too many japanese songs fully playable on orchestra, excluding newly composed works.
@chriss6356

esther Szalay as I understand it, traditional Asian music use completely different scales and note intervals so it would be pretty difficult for a classical orchestra to play that sort of thing

A common scale for Japanese folk music is the pentatonic scale, which really isn't that hard. The other side to playing it is because there are only five notes in the pentatonic scale, that can make fingerings tricky.

Don't miss this performance. I couldn't believe how expressive Yo Yo Ma is - never heard as good ever from a cello (of course that characteristic is awful when he plays Bach)
