Johannes Brahms - Geistliches Lied op.30 (1856)

recorded at Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (2012)

Laß dich nur nichts nicht dauren mit Trauren,
sei stille, wie Gott es fügt,
so sei vergnügt mein Wille!
Was willst du heute sorgen auf morgen?
Der Eine steht allem für,
der gibt auch dir das Deine.
Sei nur in allem Handel ohn Wandel,
steh feste, was Gott beschleußt,
das ist und heißt das Beste.
Amen.
Translation:
Do not be sorrowful or regretful;
Be calm, as God has ordained,
and thus my will shall be content.
What do you want to worry about from day to day?
There is One who stands above all
who gives you, too, what is yours.
Only be steadfast in all you do,
stand firm; what God has decided,
that is and must be the best.
Amen

It requires a genius to make something this simple be this profound and moving.

Literally just sang this Saturday, loved it so much, doing the Amens in the very beginning as a bass 2 just makes me melt when hearing the whole group.

Beautiful performance. And that amen! Sang this at the weekend, and hitting that tenor crescendo on the amen without a lump in the throat took some doing. Sublime!

I don’t seem to be able to appreciate a work’s beauty or value upon first hearing. I must listen many times until it becomes familiar to my ear. I think that a big part of the pleasure I get in listening is knowing what is coming next….anticipating, then when I hear what I expected to hear, there is that delicious moment of fulfillment and resolution.

What a wonderful performance. I would love to see/hear these forces perform the German Requiem.

I have sung this with piano and organ accompaniment and this is the first time I have heard it with orchestra. I still feel keyboard accompaniment is the best. The reason is in my mind simple. The keyboard maintains the intimacy of this piece. The orchestra broadens the sound and I think the chorus provides enough sound and the orchestra seems to compete for the sound rather than supporting the chorus. I first sang this in college 53 years ago along with Zoltan Kodaly's beautiful "Esti Dal". Both pieces remain in my heart and mind for their beauty to this day. After all that, this is a lovely performance.

I agree about the use of the strings. I think it is a mistake. It’s ironic that this performance took place on a stage with a beautiful pipe organ behind the performers. I think the competition between the singers and the strings led to a loss of the peaceful intimacy of the song. After all, it’s about being still and trusting God in the face of troubles. It sounded a bit heavy handed to me. Stick with the organ accompaniment Brahms wrote.

This is wonderful, but the simplicity of organ and a smaller choir is best.

Doubt it’s been published. You can access the organ score easily. I believe the string parts correlate rather cleanly to the organ score and vocal parts.

2:26 is that a baroque bow hold?
@frankborder

They’re all holding their bows in a baroquish way, after the fantasy that Brahms music should somehow be played as though it’s 200 years older. It has some interesting results sometimes.

What a shame Brahms did not believe the many Scripture and other religious words he set. His friend Dvorak lamented, "What a great man, what a great soul...yet he believes nothing!" He is, it seems, best described as stoic.
@MrAristaeus
@MrAristaeus 4 года назад
aga panthus is the music not beautiful? Is it not truly moving? Or do you call us as well Brahms himself deficient?! It’s difficult to understand what sort of ‘shame’ you describe when listening to this sublime music. Also, just so that you know I am not a completely blind/deaf sycophant, this performance, as lovely as it is lacks forward momentum and falls into the perilously easy trap of being overly indulgent. One can musically naval gaze as well as spiritually naval gaze...
@agapanthus1953

@@MrAristaeus of COURSE it is beautiful and moving!!! I merely echoed his friend Dvorak's comment.
