Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a German composer and pianist known for his significant contributions to Romantic music. He was born on May 7, 1833, in Hamburg, Germany. Brahms' works are characterized by their intricate structures, rich harmonies, and deep emotional expression. He is often regarded as one of the "Three Bs" of classical music, alongside Bach and Beethoven.
Brahms showed early musical talent as a pianist and composer. He gained recognition with his compositions and performances in various European cities. He formed close friendships with notable musicians like Robert and Clara Schumann, who greatly influenced his career. Brahms' compositions span a wide range of genres, including symphonies, chamber music, choral works, solo piano pieces, and more. His symphonies are known for their complexity and adherence to classical forms while infusing them with his unique emotional depth. Brahms' chamber music, particularly his piano quartets, piano quintets, and string quintets, showcase his mastery of intricate counterpoint and lyricism.

I'm just going on record: Brahms is my absolute favorite composer. The man was a genius (of course, he was possibly Beethoven's biggest fan so... he knew he had big shoes to fill). His music brims with exuberant joy, aching sorrow, just unbelievable. If I could listen to only one composer for the rest of my life it would be Brahms.

I find it rendering beautiful. One can complain the pieces are carved up. As a pianist myself I love it. Don't most pianists love to play the high parts in classic music, I think they do. Having said that, ofcorse a complete part is the essence in music, but not necessarily day on day.

Thank you! I appreciate the care taken in curating these selections, the carefully prepared track list, and especially for managing to keep the audio levels so consistent. Because I really was in the mood to listen without having to jump up and adjust volume repeatedly. For @classicallpvault8251 who complained below and confessed that this concept was beyond him/her, I was in a mood to listen to adagios while I work undistracted. Another time I will be in the mood to listen to a complete concerto or symphony. Actually the closing allegro movements were all the more invigorating after three hours of adagios and andantes.

Wonderful. My fav. author. If someone is listening to this to "get relaxed" (in the last decades it seems the only possible "use" of boring classical music) well, the end is not exactly an Adagio... it starts as an Adagio but it ends in one of the most orgasmic finales I know (3:20:34 onward...)

Why one would take these pieces out of context and sit through an entire 3.5 hours of slow movements is beyond me.

Explain “out of context “

@@nehuge The context is the multi-movement works that they were taken from. The slow movement of a symphony/sonata/chamber work takes quotes from the first movement (generally an allegro in sonata form) and develops these. Without the sonata-allegro preceding them, you aren't presented with the thematic material that they're based on, and there is no contrast between the various movements, and a significant part of the meaning of the work is lost. These pieces are not standalone works and even the few instances where they're not part of a multi-movement work, they're still part of a set of pieces that were meant to be played as a set. There's only one instance, the opus 119 no.1., where there's not supposed to be anything preceding it - but even there, the piece is still supposed to be followed by another one of contrasting nature. One can compare it to sunshine being extra significant if it's preceded by a thunder storm. You appreciate fine things more if you can contrast them with something else.

Perhaps the intention of this beautiful compilation is for each individual listener who has and those who will enjoy it in their own way: while taking a bubble bath after a long day, while looking through photo albums of the kids while they were growing up, to ease the mind and bring comfort to someone recuperating, while relaxing on the couch with a warm beverage and a lap pet, a sweet retreat from the noisy and busy world to be returned to where it was last left off. Instead of being critical of its existence as a beautiful compilation and wonderful resource for each individual to enjoy in their own way, your stance could have been presented as a "could also be enjoyed......" instead of a critical "should be enjoyed...". To each their own and live and let live. For someone to think it's OK to pompously criticize a beautiful compilation for people to enjoy in their own way is beyond me.

@@classicallpvault8251 I understand your opinion, only here the goal is not art but just using art as a way to generate basic emotions and background music. This is like a "collage". Personaly the lack of complexity through time and holism based on calm help me to read, i couldnt use a whole symphony for this purpose.

The real question is why not? I enjoy both ways but sometimes we just want adagio
