Isaac Meadow I have heard both Sviatoslav Richter recordings but I prefer Emil Gilles. My two favorite recordings are Arrau/Haitink and Watts/Bernstein.

I absolutely adore this recording, and just about everything that Gilels plays. However, another excellent recording worth listening to is Julius Katchen who was, himself, another brilliantly capable and imaginative performer.

I was also 15 when it came out but never heard it till 1975....and then couldn't stop listening to it. The slow movement is just perfection-those clarinets in the F# major section....

@@alexanderkalinkovich5561 I have Richter/Leinsdorf LSC 2466, which is really good but despite all I prefer Gilels with Jochum; Jochum is in my opinion a most underrated conductor clearly more desirable than Leinsdorf. Richter of course is amazing too as is Gilels.
@@clauss2563 Dear Claus D, if you're ready to listen to this Brahms concerto again, I highly recommend AS Disc - AS 335/6 - Richter + Charles Munch. In my opinion, this is the best performance of this concerto in history. Gilels is certainly very good, but Richter is a genius.
Thought Serkin was the Gold standard until now, mvt. 3 is exquisite beyond human comprehension. Commonly accepted that Gilels is rated upper eschelon, but never was convinced until this monumental rendition, hopefully not just a good day.

You wouldn't know it was the same Gilels (who recorded this in 1973) who also recorded the same concerto with Reiner in 1959. This is very controlled and subdued, while the other is fiery and passionate.
