In this performance of Brahms' First Symphony, there is a unity in the sound of the entire orchestra that has never been heard before, as if all the music were being played by a single musician.

That third movement is so gorgeous - beginning with one of the loveliest melodies Brahms ever composed. Great rendition!

I am a member of the strings in the Sydney Symphony of years ago, i can always remember Sir Geog Solti giving us what he thinks of our playing, that he said that in that he heard it in his dreams but we should our playing!

Sorry, that should read 'Improve' our playing.

Thanks for the upload. As much as I love the other symphonies of Brahms, particularly the 4th, there is something very special about the 1st. In the entire symphonic repertoire (of the known works) this still remains among my all time favourites.

Awesome and wonderful interpretation of this incredible symphony which took Brahms between 15 and 20 years to compose it. The perfection in the expression is incredible, great conducting of the first chair violin and the solo part , charming and full of feeling .GREAT performance of course under the baton of the great Charles Dutoit.

Well, the main theme of the finale of the First Symphony is also reminiscent of the main theme of the finale of Beethoven's Ninth, and when this resemblance was pointed out to Brahms he replied that any dunce could see that! In 1876, when the work was premiered in Vienna, it was immediately hailed as "Beethoven's Tenth"!

This piece has always been a favorite of mine virtually all my life, and (along with Brahms' 2nd) never more than now. I'm very impressed, and also not a little bit surprised, at the quality of the orchestra; and while I missed the repeat in the first set, the tempi were fair, and I particularly appreciated how the director segued attacca from set to set throughout. A right presentable performance! Thank you! JAT

I'm sorry - the tempo in the intro of the first movement is way too slow - it lacks the drive and energy it should have...he catches up after that, so I'm not sure why he is dragging that introduction.

@@caseyphudson At 36:57 there are some trumpets. You can also hear them throughout the fourth movement. I can see why you'd be confused. So many shots of the woodwinds, french horns, and first violin!
