In May 1951 I won the Holmes scholarship to the London College of Music. I later asked, what had prompted them to award it to me? "Simple, lad" was the reply: "You got it the moment you put the Brahms G major on the stand!".
Brahms' violin sonata's are the ideal pieces of music. Their construction is the pinnacle of structure and counterpoint. Their melody and harmony go to the highest points of emotion. I know them almost by heart and I still discover and learn every time.
